    i'm a barber in vancouver, canada, been out of barber school for almost a year. yesterday at the shop i had a pretty shit day, felt like i kinda got worse somehow, wasn't too pleased with any of my cuts to be honest. i felt a bit better today but still havin a bad day. watching this has most definitely inspired me as well as given me some pointers. thank you so so much for this video and i can't wait to get back into the shop tomorrow and use some new found knowledge thanks to you. keep up the good work!

    I would love step by step videos on your clipper over comb method and just overall approach when doing haircuts. I've just started learning to cut hair about six months ago and I'm tired of using the plastic guards and want to learn a more traditional way of going about it.

    I've been watching this video over and over for one year now, since I started as a barber myself. I just have one wish, that you would make a step by step tutorial on your technique. But it will probably not happen, this video is already 5 years old. That's so sad. Hope you still do it though, Terry! Would make my week!

    Fu**en Sick style! Love it! I've been cutting for almost a year and all the vids I've seen on youtube are using a clipper guard system. I almost always use clipper/scissor over comb towards the end of my cuts, but this has inspired me to go all out with clipper over comb. Thank you for the vid. Great work on the video editing/cut!

  • @woodpeckersonfirs
    @woodpeckersonfirs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hi great video! Good shots of the clipper over combing. Had a question- I was wondering why you did the initial vertical sections when you went through with horizontal sections after that. Thanks!

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, glad you liked the vid, the reason to cut vertical and horizontal is to cross check the line to make sure the shape is strong. I over direct vertically the extend the shape horizontally to check and remove any scissor marks. Hope that helps dude

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andy, sorry mate, read your question wrong. (I thought you were asking about the top ) Regards to clipper over comb its kinda the same approach, I smash through vertically building the shape up and if needed go through horizontally to strengthen the line of the fade. As you can see in the vid its a very heavy fade, which I like, so it means I can push a bit harder to show a strong contrast. There we go, hope that helps

    • @woodpeckersonfirs
      @woodpeckersonfirs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chris Terry no problem, you actually answered my question with your first response, though I am still a little confused- will the initial vertical sections around 8 minutes kind of make the shape look like an upside down V, but then when you do horizontal sections around 14 minutes, it almost seems like it's flattening out the top. Are you mainly setting the length with the first vertical pass to not go too short, then setting the shape by going horizontally? Later around 15 minutes I get that you're cross checking the horizontal sections and cutting any corners that might be there

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Andy, at the 8min mark I'm taking the length shorter from back to the front horizontally to keep length at the front to set the shape up. The vertical sections I connect the length from exterior guide to square up the top. I overdirect the front towards the shorter length around the crown to give me a pomp affect. How's that?

      +Chris Terry excellent thank you!

    i watched this video like more than 10 times , Please teach us the art !
    i mess up the back when connecting right and left side in the middle with clipper over comb , i dont knw what i do wrong but i get a bald kinda spot in the back.

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey man, the best way to avoid that is to work your way from the first side you start with to the back and actually complete most of the back then. Then work the other side to the completed length at the back. You'll notice when I start with the left side I finish at the back ( about 3.33min into timer) I've pretty much got the back done, then work the right side to that shape. Try that and see how you go. I'm always conscious of leaving a bald patch too so I tend to leave a bit more length at the back just in case then take it shorter if need be. Glad you liked the vid man and keep practicing bro! Hope that helps!

    • @dailygrindbarber1177
      @dailygrindbarber1177 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man for taking time and to explain it in detail , this information has surely helped me to understand the technique better.

      you going to do any more videos? Would you be a be able to share with me some helpful tips on how to start using the right hand, left hand technic. What to look for while applying this skill? Also fading? How would I go about fading? What are my do and don't? what is it that I'm looking for in the angle of my comb? Sorry for all the questions? But I would really like to now this skill..... I've never cut a head of hair in my like and going into Barbering school soon. Coming from a treads background ( Electrical, Carpenter ) I can see that is the skill that sets you apart from the rest. So I figured get the hard stuff over with first...... Cheers Brother.

      Hey Levi, the firs thing you need to do to get good at clipper over comb is to get good at scissor over comb. Scissor over comb is an incredible skill to master and builds up the small muscles in your hands making it easier to master clipper over comb. There's a lot of small things happening all at once when doing clipper over comb man and quite difficult to put into words. I think I'll make a short step by step vid soon so you can see for yourself. Stay tuned...

    great video but I have a question are the side supposed to be that heavey

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +1 timedime Hi there, yes the sides do show a heavy line. Personally I like a heavier line on an old skool look like this, it gives the sides more contrast and grows out better especially towards the 5th and 6th week after being cut. As the cut grows out it presents itself like a greaser which is great for the customer and us because the cut is still on point. Also we did shoot the vid on a higher contrast than usual so darker colours like the weight line appear slightly heavier than they are. I think it's cool, thanks for checking it out and stay tuned for our upcoming tutorial vid!

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Armando Martinez jr. Hey man, the guy with the glasses is me, haircut is a simple disconnected slick back with a tight fade. we don't use guards at all in the shop so I can't give you any numbers sorry but I'd say it would start at a half from the bottom faded up.
      I'm not sure what you mean about the dome? If you're asking about the music it's a local one man band, Stomping Nick & His Blues Grenade. Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the vid bro

      +Armando Martinez jr. Yeah man no numbers, old school. I can't quite remember the product on the 'dome', I think it's JS Sloane Caviar Clay ( matt finish ) mixed with a bit Lightweight JS Sloane pomade.

    There is no way I could clipper over comb the sides like that. What guards would I use to get the sides like you just did?

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man, sorry I couldn't tell you, I've never used guards for a fade. When I got taught 30yrs ago we weren't allowed to use guards, just the way it was back then. I'd suggest using a combination of full and half sized guards then adjust your bottom blade to pick up any lines. Hope that helps and good luck bro

    Straight beast! I wanna get at your level of skill! How did you blend without creating a line with just the clipper? Like after the clipper over come..

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Alfonso Sanchez Hey man, all you do is open up the blade and scoop from the bottom up. The trick is to change the angle you hold the clipper to blend, if you want to go close keep your clipper flat to the scalp, if you want to be soft hold your clipper more towards 90 degree's from the scalp. To blend you have to subtly change your angle between the two. It takes a lot of practice and patience so take your time. Stay smooth and keep your movements fluid. Hope that helps dude

      Hey Jesse, glad you liked it! I was taught back in 87-88 to use left and right hand. It was just the way we were trained man. 2 main benefits being you are more balanced physically (less likely to get back problems later in your career) and you never stand forward of your customer and get in their personal space.
      Sadly a skill that isn't taught much any more. I train my apprentices this way and they smash it! Cheers

      amazing,ive been a barber here in Canada for 5 years, and i already experience back and shoulder problems on the regular. Im going to start trying this to get some more balance and work the other hemisphere of the brain too. I agree, when cutting the top of the clients hair, i sometimes get in front, and i guess it does cramp their space a little bit. All great points. Good to see awesome craftsmanship. You guys in NZ have excellent training.

      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good luck with switching to left hand on the left side bro, here's some tips...Keep your elbows up and even...stand with your feet at shoulder width apart...look down the teeth of the comb to keep your line straight....use the fingers that aren't holding your comb as support by placing them on the scalp....run the clippers over each section at least 3 times to catch all of the hair....take your time.... All these tips are in the video so watch it closely and all the best.

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, glad you liked the vid, the comb I use is a Carbon comb by Cricket, wide teeth at one end and super fine at the other so you can get good tension during clipper overcome. Its really stiff which makes it way easier to push with the clippers. More video's to come soon, keep watching!

    • @christerry9834

      Hey man, I find the best way is to hold your comb with your thumb and index finger then use the other 3 fingers to stabilize your hand by touching the scalp with them. It takes a while to get the hang of and you'll need to move your 3 supporting fingers around until you're comfortable but once you find your own way it's all good. Hope that helps

    • @christerry9834
      @christerry9834  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a carbon fiber comb by Cricket. Normally used for combing out long hair in a hair salon. Most suppliers should have something similar. It's very thin and rigid so you can set extra close to the scalp. Hope that helps

      That's a shame mate, we have 30min appointments at my shop. I prefer to take my time and treat my staff well so they can enjoy their day and their craft.We charge $50 a cut so we can afford to spend more time on our customers who really appreciate our service. !5min haircuts are fine for a while but when you've been cutting hair for 31yrs like me it's impossible and unhealthy to maintain that pace. Each to their own i guess....
