If you want more childfree spaces, you HAVE to give more places where children can actually hang out in.
There are barely any places left for children and teens to hang out at because of the decline of third places.
I feel like my generation (Gen Z) have the worst teen life years because literally all the third places are dead. No more malls, movie theaters are too expensive, you'll literally get kicked out from loitering in public areas.
Even on the internet most children hang out spaces are infested with gross and inappropriate adults.

yes exactly, i'm glad i'm not alone on this. i don't want to be stuck in my house all day but spending time outside is expensive and if you're not paying they don't want you there. it happens more with teenagers, because they assume we're up to no good but like no i just want to be outside of my house.
      it's dehumanizing and isolating really.

The opposition to the “I’m tired of kids acting like blah blah blah” is that lots of kids are tired of the world treating them like they’re less than and not able to make decisions for themselves. Believe it or not, many kids are very intelligent and able to pick up on behavior from adults that’s highly disrespectful or even abusive 🤷‍♀️

I remember taking you're so mature as a compliment oh and by the way saw this post a few minutes ago where they were comparing kids today playing with makeup vs teens acting like kids which some one said kids want to be older and teens act like kid which to that I think is wrong some of us didn't get to have a childhood and especially with quarantine cooping everyone inside I think it good that people still play with dolls and act like 'kids' because no one said when you grow up you have to stop. By the way there's nothing really wrong with children playing with makeup either girl or boy it's literally good that they are curious and willing to experiment we still have toy makeup and did we just forget teens went through a whole that girl it girl self-care glowup beauty hacks.

Hi, I'm a "child" (young teenager). I attend a lot of parties with a lot of elderly african women. They like to push me around, LITERALLY. They will shove past me. I was at my aunts wedding, and a women pushed me to the side where I then fell over. The amount of times where i've been told to "stay in a child's place," or to clean up a mess that is not mine is insane. I'm tired, I'm sick of it. I love being a kid, and I want to enjoy the carefreeness of it, but people WON'T LET ME. And then as soon as I start maturing as a result all of the aunties think I'm "trying to be fast."

When kids are rude, entitled, and judgemental, it's because they're being the most honest versions of themselves and haven't fully learned how to control, direct, or express their thoughts, language, and feelings. It's all a part of growing up and learning to be social. When adults are rude, entitled, and judgemental, it's either they haven't developed those skills or they're doing it intentionally to hurt someone and make them feel bad

the best part about my job is helping kids even. they come up to me to ask me for something and everytime when i'm done helping them the parent(s) will say "and what do you say to the nice lady", and the kid will tell me "thank you". those moments make my day because it's a break from the 3 people in a row asking me to speak to the manager

I literally feel physical pain around sudden, or unpredictable loud noises. Not just the sounds above 140 decibels that actually cause bodily harm if you're too close to the source.
Which is all kids are for like the first twelve years of their lives until reality starts to properly kick them in the teeth and they learn that 'Huh, screaming at the top of my lungs everywhere I go when I don't get my way, isn't the best way to make people like me, GO FIGURE!'

I’ve recently been suspended from my job at a grocery store for unrelated reasons, but I honestly thought kids were the best part of the job. Seeing their smiles when they got to use the machine made my day better every time. Seeing them being helpful to their parents always made me feel better, if not a little sad because they should just sit back and let the professional do the work. This is H-E-B after all, not Nike. What always disappointed me however was the amount of kids just sitting in the kid cart on their iPad. Just sitting there watching Cocomelon or Skibidi toilet or whatever kids watch nowadays. I liked the kids who interacted with me and their parents, the ones who I could tell are being raised right and are going to look back on their childhood memories fondly.

The worst part is when adults take over spaces for kids and make it unsafe for them, only for other adults to validate the behavior because it's "funny". Then complain when kids are annoying them spaces not designed for kids.
For example: I love kid friendly games and try to keep my behavior as tame as possible/help the kids get cool items in the game intended for them... But other adults have made it their quest to take over sites like Webkinz and Neopets with inappropriate pet names, outfits, and behavior. Then get mad when an actual kid is having fun on the kid friendly website and say it should be their site now.

I understand people who want child-free places because there are so many places that are way too inappropriate for kids, but hating kids even though they never did anything to you is weird. Kids cry! Kids get stressed! I work at a grocery store, and I hear kids running, crying, and getting overstimulated all the time. However, I am not usually the one that handles that! I get irritated by adults who complain about crying babies in airplanes. Neither the parents nor the babies have control over that. If you're that bothered by it, don't ride a plane. The best is seeing them enjoy things for the first time like whrn my baby niece tried pineapple for the first time and her eyes lit up like she just discovered the meaning of life, or when she pronounces words like pomkmiskle (popsicle) or today I taught her to say hi to other kids (we were at a restaurant and she saw this other little girl and they were waving at each other so I walked her over to her family and introduced oursleves)
It's one thing to not want the responsibility of having a child (I'm disabled and would be unable to take care of a child beyond simple babysitting)

I feel like people have forgotten how kids are supposed to act and how they acted as kids. Children obviously shouldn’t be in adult spaces. Trying to ban children from all public spaces however is nuts. Being inconvenienced by a toddler who has like 3 total years of experience won’t kill them. It’s ageism. Like how are the kids supposed to never interact with the public but also have perfect social skills with no mistakes? I don’t understand people saying most spaces are child friendly. Adults are in charge and design for themselves primarily. Children themselves are like an afterthought.

this both means children are left isolated from socializing and children don't get any independence at all so they don't get to make decisions for themselves or take small risks.

For example, here in Finland, some people wish that the children would stay inside, be quiet and sit in their places "like a proper person" instead of screaming and running outside "like children". And these adults are not ashamed to disapprove of this in public and in front of the children. In addition, it seems that many are happy when the police evict children, teenagers and young people from parks, beaches, malls and cafes, so that they "remain quiet and peaceful for the residents of the neighborhood." edit to yap more about this:
to be more specific, im talking about the people who are openly hostile to parents and children. im not talking about the people who just dont wanna be parents. im talking about the people who will specifically exclude family members who have children. i can understand not wanting kids but its a whole different thing when people harass children in public or in their neighborhoods for doing normal kid activities. i feel like its pretty common to know someone or hear someone atleast once make nasty remarks to children and go on to talk about how they want to beat kids for being kids. i personally have only seen that type of mindset from people who make crude remarks about children in that way, calling them demon spawn, crotch goblins, ect. if you stop for a moment and think about how children are also human beings which are trying to learn then these jokes and remarks become way more concerning. and if children are particularly awful why is it that the children are scolded but the parents aren’t? this is the sentiment that i was trying to get across with my original comment.

Yep, there is nothing that annoys me more than a parent that won't respond to their kid (almost never for an actual reason, often they are on their phones or just staring off into space ignoring their child.) And so now everybody and their grandma has to endure hearing "Mommy? MOMMY? Mommy? Mommy? Mom? Mommy? Mom? Mom? *Crying"* "MOMMY!! " Mom!" And then after 400 bids for attention they'll scream " WHAT?!!"
Like they force the child to request their attention 400 times, but then finally answer right before they give up, thus teaching the child that THIS is the only way to get your parents attention.
I wondered for so many years why kids have this universal, annoying AF " Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy" times 15 behavior, but then I started paying attention and saw that it's because just about every parent makes it the only way.
Even when the parent is in the middle of their conversation and the kid starts, they don't take a second to stop and say " Little Timmy, it isn't nice to interrupt people. When I was young and interrupted everybody, it didn't work, they just talked over and ignored me. You have to be patient and wait your turn. I'll listen to you completely when it's your turn to talk." Nope, they just talk over and ignore them, as if the kid is supposed to understand what's going on and take the hint, then finally explode at the 27th "Mommy!"

I'm an autistic guy that works at a grocery store. not a day goes by that I don't hear a child crying at some level. sometimes they're on the very same aisle I'm stocking, and I don't like it. it overwhelms me, it's grating, I wish there was a realistic way that these kids could be removed from the situation that's making them so upset.
THAT SAID. there simply isn't. parents need to bring their kids shopping cuz they can't afford childcare when they're out of the house. they bring their kids shopping so the kids can pick food and other items they need themselves so they can learn to make important decisions. parents bring their kids along cuz the kids are scared to be alone. and god forbid a parent brings their kids along because they like their kids company like whoa god forbid fr god forbid.
like bars and restaurants and spas, fine whatever make some of those places child free that's fine, but there are very good fucking reasons a parent NEEDS to bring the kid to the store. and when one of those kids starts crying in my vicinity, I don't curse the kid for being there. i don't even curse the parent for bringing them. it just makes me sad that the kid is overwhelmed and needs something that they might not be able to get rn, that's all.

I have younger siblings and a natural maternal instinct do I may be biased here, but I've found that supposed child friendly spaces are often made unfriendly by adults.
Me and my family went to watch the sonic movie when it first came out and a bunch of teenage to college aged people obviously went there for the memes and were yelling and swearing the entire time.
Adults will smoke around kids with no regard for their health. They'll curse and fuck up and get drunk at parties that have kids there.
Also, they're acting like these places aren't also overwhelming for kids. Kids need to run around and the more they're told you cant do that or getting yelled at by their parents, the less they understand. And I'm neurodivergent and get overwhelmed by adults making a racket a lot. Have my entire life. And when they go to a general area clearly drunk and making a fool of themselves, it's even worse.
My family was at a sports club for my grandparents last anniversary before my grandad died and my little brother, aged nine at the time, had a drunk guy fall on top of him ass first when he was half their size. It's not fun.
These areas aren't kid friendly at all because people make them unfriendly.

I am 17 years old, close to becoming a adult, and the way this world treats children sickens me deeply. I’m not lying when I say that children (and teenagers) are the biggest, most vulnerable minority/group of people on earth. Let me just name a few examples of children who are already suffering: kids living in poverty, kids living in war zones, kids in abusive households, kids who were raped/sexually abused/groomed, homeless kids, children in foster homes/in the system, children of color, black children, brown children, Native American children, Palestinian kids, kids who are part of the LGBTQ, neurodivergent and mentally ill children, disabled kids, kids who were kicked out of their homes, child soldiers, runaways and etc etc.
And on top of all that shit, they have to deal with the fact that people don’t even see them as humans.

I loved to browse Sephora and Ulta I was always respectful to the products and people but now I feel like if I go those I will be looked at filmed without my consent and had people be rude to me for simply existing in the same room as them (all of which have happened before). I used to go to the movies, but now they are too expensive for my family to afford. Online I’ve been shamed for liking adult shows. I can’t afford to have a streaming service so I have to watch internet cartoons, mostly adult cartoons. I understand concerns about inappropriate content but you must understand the fact that attend a public middle school, I’ve heard and seen worse. And every time I find a community online I’ve been shamed because “you’re too young to be on the internet”, but where the heck am I supposed to go? The park? My city doesn’t have one. The library? My parent can’t just leave me there alone and he works to much to go with me. A restaurant? Same problem. I have 2 options according to everything I’ve said, read the very few books I own outright (can’t go to the library very often), or stare into a wall. Because I was shamed into stopping collecting my dolls that I enjoyed because I’m “not 5 anymore”. So of course I’m gonna be on the internet. That’s why I feel like teens specifically need places to go online *and* physically. Thank you for reading my long rant.

I'm good at taking care of kids. I was the oldest of my cousins and always taking care of them. I was often adultified at a young age not only at home when I became the primary care of my sister, but even at school because I was seen "mature for my age". The first job I got was helping children experiencing extreme scenarios like the foster care system and parents under criminal investigation cope and adjust as my first job...an illegal age for how many hours I was working because I was a child myself. I'm also childfree, more or less because of my experience.
I think a lot of people hit the nail on the head when they talk about the lack of third spaces, but there is other layers that people are missing when they discuss this
The economic classism of it all. Wealthy people DO have third spaces and child free spaces. This is a non-wealthy people problem. Meanwhile non-wealthy people are working longer hours for less money. When they go to their affordable choice of leisure for the 2 days (if they are lucky) they have off and a child is there, it does feel like their whole world is crashing down. Historically when people are buckling under the socio-economic weight of inequality, instead of going through the daunting task of reflecting on the systematic structures at hand and potentially spiraling into nihilism or admitting they have to work for change, they target the most visible minority who is vulnerable and shift the blame on them because that is a target that is more within reach. There is are reasons why there is a correlation (IMPORTANT: NOT CAUSATION) between the general poverty level of an area and the amount of animal and child abuse, and it's one of the most well documented correlations when it comes to those two things.
Also through the internet, it's become more clear how strongly the environment children are raised in and consuming affects their worldview. Pipelines and echo chambers are becoming more prevalent as social medias become these giant monoliths, we are giving power to what these little kids are saying (ex: a 13 y/o's opinion) because they are venting the most out of touch shit possible and it's going viral. We also need room for decentralized spaces like the geocities era so children can have a space to be cringe in and not become the latest viral debate.

    • @bottlecaps1044

For clarification on the first point; yes there are a lot of places that are child free by design, but oftentimes wealthy places are child free by the virtue of the etiquette of the society surrounding them and pricing out families. The same places that have child free resorts also have places for said children to go. They have things like bars and restaurants where you can leave your kids to be babysat while you enjoy yourself. They are super fucking expensive.
Meanwhile my favorite bar offers really good deals for some yummy meals with big portions if you also buy a drink and no matter what hour I go there, there are always parents with 2-6 kids there too running around being kids. It doesn't bother me because that's not the kid's fault AND it's not the parent's fault either. We are both going here instead of the nice expensive bar for the same reason. We are working the same types of job and are buckling under the same weight. Let's not be so quick to throw the parents under the bus because they are struggling too.

Everyone probably has their own childhood memories of being belittled and ridiculed for their interests, talked down to, and the constant frusteration of not being 'right' for the world yet because of their age. Weird that many people hate children and refuse to understand them when they themselves were once in the exact same place.

Because R rated horror movie. I probably shouldn't have been nosey, but she snapped at me that "she can't take her kids to see whatever the hell she wants." Backed off because okay, sorry, I didn't mean to piss you off. They ended up leaving right around the scene where John Cho murders his pregnant wife. Kids are way less judgmental than adults and their also a lot more accepting, the reason we are so mature is because we are told to be more mature and to “stop acting like a child” I am way more mature than most adults I’ve seen, ofc not everyone acts like this, kids can be judgmental and adults can not, but it’s just very hard to live in a world where everyone is telling you what you can and can’t be. thank you for commenting! and yeah, there will always be people of all kinds in all age groups. as someone who was a tween not too long ago, I'm in the same boat as you where certain types of judgment aren't really my thing. Like I'm not gonna care about someone's behavior or interests in general, as long as it doesn't affect me or anyone I care about in my life. But that's still me being judgmental though. I'm just judging the situation as one that I don't want to care about. everyone's a bit judgmental. Even in your comment you are judging some adults to be more judgmental, which they are, so you are correct in your judgments. but it's still judgmental. you still made judgments (defined as the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions). do you see what I'm saying?
i think the real issue is people ignoring context and nuance in their judgments, basically ignoring logic and critical thinking. Like if I see a kid acting like an animal, my understanding of kids is that kids do that, and I'm going to let kids be kids unless things get out of hand. That's acknowledging the context of their age. If another adult sees that and thinks they need to be institutionalized or something, they're ignoring that same context and are taking things too far. However, if I see an adult acting like that, I think I would judge the situation as one of concern. I don't know if I would do anything else in that situation other than keep my distance, but still.
i think there will kind of always be expectations about what people can and can't be, for legal reasons, but also human nature reasons. it is in our nature to expect certain behaviors and attitudes from others due to the cognitive schemas we naturally build up via our life experiences and memories. and I think that these expectations can be mixed, good and bad. for example, as a society, we generally hold parents to the expectation that they SHOULD be responsible parents. that's a good expectation that should exist, for the safety and welfare of kids and generations to come. Some people also have the expectation that kids should be more mature, quiet, perfect. that is a bad expectation; it is irrational, unreasonable, and unrealistic. if we don't tell parents that they should be responsible for their kids or how to be responsible for their kids, telling them what they can or can't be, we're setting them up for failure. and if we expect kids to be on any sort of healthy path of life without proper caretakers and role models, we are setting them up for failure as well.
basically tldr, there is a necessity for judgments and expectations, being judgmental is somewhat inherent to human nature, but with judgments and expectations, there should also be nuance, logic, and critical thinking.
there is a time and place for open-mindedness, and a time and place for making judgments as well.
if you read all this, thank you as well. hope you have a great day/night.

Thus cutting off children from being in said space then a lot of Gen Y and Gen X left a lot of spaces behind. Since Arcades were dying when before I was 18, I never cared for rolling rings, etc. As a kid yet so many adult spaces are JUST former spaces for kids. Like Dave and Busters is just Chuck E Cheese for adults. I understand why since we have spare money that we can blow up at these spaces. When they ignore the food is bad, the lessions are bad, too much homework, they're being exposed to violence, they have to get up early and stand in the bad weather conditions or they risk getting in trouble. They can't get sick and the list goes on. It was bad nearly 20+ years ago and it just got worse for kids. Since Parents were teens they went screw and went inside. Now as parents their kids never knew what outside really was.

I've never understood the hatred towards children. It's like ppl forget they were also once kids and just lack empathy towards them. Like yeah, they're annoying but so was I when I was their age and so were so many others. They were literally born not too long ago. They're still navigating the world like everyone else. I also hate child-free people who come online to shame and attack parents and talk about how "miserable" parents are and how they don't have to deal with that. Like ok? If you don't want kids, that's fine but don't shame parents who have kids and make it seem like they're miserable. They don't like when ppl pressure them to have kids or attack them for not starting a family so why do it to those with a family? I like kids and hope to have at least 1 or 2 in the future (If I can because I do have an irregular/longer period than normal) so I hate seeing ppl attack them and insult them, especially since they're still CHILDREN🤦🏾‍♀ . Also about the child-free spaces, are kids supposed to be locked up all day?? Like why can't kids also enjoy they're lives? They're already restricted considering they really can't do anything without their parents or their parents consent and so going out to places like restaurants or grocery stores are their only time to get out and have fun. I know for me, that was the case. I was never really allowed out on my own unless it was nearby so going to the grocery store or restaurant or just anywhere that's not nearby was fun to me. And about the bar thing, kids shouldn't be going to bars and I'm tired of seeing parents (and ppl in general) "adultifying" (probably not a real word lol) kids. Like the weaves, lashes, cussing, inappropriate dancing, bars, club themed parties, pole dancing etc. It's too much! Let kids live and let kids be kids!

Its just that whenever I thought of kids I didnt think of actual kids, I just thought of the stress that taking care of them caused me. My experience with kids had always been either me taking care of them and stressing out about it or people constantly telling me when I grow up Ill be a mother and love them or whatever, so I attatched those bad experiences and blamed it on hating kids intead of just not being able to handle taking care of them. People just hate when humans are still learning to be human or get frustrated when you're not exactly like them. This lends to everyone from children, to the disabled, to personality disorders, to survivors of extreme trauma (think Gypsy Rose who clearly doesn't know how to be a person in society yet). When I got out of a trafficking situation (way more common than you'd think) and needed to learn how the world functioned for the first time I was treated like SHIT by society and so were the people in my support groups in the same situation. Hell, when I ran to a hospital I was turned away with a ton of attitude because I didn't have ID or a health card yet. Just a few months ago I saw someone's boss scream at a disabled person for not being able to drive a car- something they never lied about. This hatred of people who need time to grow and understand things also lends I feel to how defensive people get if they ever make a mistake. It's like people see learning and growing as this horrible crime. We as a society need to stop being such selfish assholes and help each other instead.
