If you're going to make these videos get your facts straight. None of these cars were performance cars. They were as good or better than what was sold at the time. They might not have been hemi Challengers but they saw a lot of people many miles
You are wrong about the Maverick. It was very popular and out sold the Mustang. In fact Ford tried to cancel the Maverick because of this issue but was unable to due to sales until 1977.
Did anyone know this Easter Egg?: Chevy, Olds, Pontiac and Buick, in that order spelled NOVA..... Nova, Omega, Ventura and Apollo, it was done on purpose, since the Nova was the flagship of the X body cars...
Only good thing about malaise era American cars. They were very easy to hot rod, “upgrade” engine and other drivetrain stuff. Chuck out wheezy 267 v8 that had 115hp to 350 or bigger V8 with 300+ hp engine. Was very cheap install and took a day or 2 to do. Gas mileage didn’t suffer that much.
If I remember correctly all these cars we're rushed to market the thought was the dealerships can sort out the flaws what a joke the consumers deserved better than that
It wasn't just rushing a design to the production floor but also rushing the cars down the line with poor fit and finish. That was a point of contention between the UAW and management. Sarcastically workers would quip something like "Put the bumper in the back seat. It's a dealer issue." or "At 45 mph no one will notice that. If it's a dark and rainy night." Way before my time workers would say "The Japanese are nipping at our heels over quality." That even found its way to the bargaining tables. We had some bad apples but most of the UAW members actually cared about quality for the sake of pride and employment. So did management but they could get lost in the weeds dealing with numbers, both units outdadoh and dollars. American cars are competitive again and have been for years but there is a collective memory of the days it wasn't so and people hang on to that. -Retired UAW.
You forgot to mention the Pacer's oversized passenger door which was touted by AMC as "super useful for long / wide loads and passengers. The passenger door was 4" longer than the driver's side door and I believe it was a bit taller as well, but I could be wrong about the height difference.
Which explains so much about it. I once was called by a friend to rescue her from a botched attempt to replace the water pump. You had to remove EVERYTHING starting at the front bumper and working all the way back to the engine block . Then remove the first casting of the block that held the pump. About a 12 hour job with hand tools vs 15 minutes for pretty much any other car of the time. All of AMC's cars were mechanical nightmares for what should be simple repairs.
The Chevrolet Chevette by General Motors was a fantastic automobile for its time. Had new and 1976 and purchased again in 1987. Both of them were fantastic automobiles. no issues
Back in 1975, my Mom's best friend bought a new Ford Maverick. Even when new, the car had an odd engine problem: sometimes, after turning the car off, the engine would shudder and shake for a second or two. I remember that the problem was hard for mechanics to diagnose, because the problem would never occur when my Mom's friend tried to demonstrate it for the mechanic. Still, she kept the car for 7 or 8 years, before finally trading it in for a new Toyota Camry in the early 80s.
One thing you have to remember anything built after 72 was seriously detuned because of emissions standards. Most engines had the compression reduced and engine timing retarded. This caused sluggish performance and didn't help the fuel mileage either. No dought Detroit made some junk in the 70s and 80s
Older American here. I believe the pronunciation of the Plymouth Volare was Vo lar a, like the song. We used to call the Chevrolet "Chevette" the Shove it. They were an awful little car.
My first car was a 1970 Chevrolet BelAir sedan. I bought it new with my savings from the military. It was pretty plain but it was pretty reliable for the time I had it (11 years and 99000 miles) . It was a 350 V8 and had Powerglide transmission. At first it didn’t have any power steering but after I had it for a while I had the dealership install a power steering system! 🥵 I later found out that it was just a continuation of the Chevys from the 1960s. Chevy completely replaced the full size models in 1971!
These cars were basic transportation for their time. Build quality was on par for an American car of that era. When the Japanese imports forced American car companies to step up their efforts.
The Vega was first available to the public in Sept 1970 as a 71 Model not a 70 and my buddy has=d a 73 Vega GT and put a 327 in it and it moved pretty good! So be more factual and none of these cars were made for performance!
These cars are all economy cars and low end cars.. kind of basic transportation that were loved by many younger buyers. All of these models are good at what they did. I loved them all .. the story is very misleading.
These cars are the reason Japanese cars. became popular. I bought a 1978 Jeep Renegade pick up which was the last American car I owned. Detroit insulted American car buyers with their planned obsolesence philosophy.
Sure none of these set the world on fire but they were just meant to be basic economic transportation. Yes Pinto is a well-known black eye for Ford and the Vega with its aluminum block with no liners ended up being a disaster. We had a used Monza for a while and yeah that thing was a pile o crap.
Sou do Brasil.
Please pronounce car names right! Volare think Dean Martin Voooo Larrr AAA not Volair! And, I had a 78 Dodge Aspen Super coupe with a 360 Engine and it was great fun and for what it was handled good and was spunky! And it was a Florida car so very little Rust!
The Apollo and Omega also had the four fifty five in them you skipped that, also the Maverick was just a re-badged Comet.I have owned most of these cars and really did not have any of the issues you pointed out. They were not perfect but then again no car is you can pick apart even the most note worthy of car.
This AI bot doesn't know how to pronounce words.
Maverick with a 302 was a beast
If you're going to make these videos get your facts straight. None of these cars were performance cars. They were as good or better than what was sold at the time. They might not have been hemi Challengers but they saw a lot of people many miles
And I STILL hated them. I guess I'm just a hateful human being. I LOVE American muscle cars. Hated all this environmental bullsh|t. Still do.
@@lambornpeter3922 Unfortunately clean air is good
I had a '70 Maverick and it was a good and fun car to drive. The front suspensions were crap but overall it was a neat little car.
You are wrong about the Maverick. It was very popular and out sold the Mustang. In fact Ford tried to cancel the Maverick because of this issue but was unable to due to sales until 1977.
I loved the Buick Apollo/Skylark and the Chevrolet Nova.
3:26 Bro - Ham! The audio exclaimed Bro - Ham! LOL!
Why does the videos mismatch the verbiage?

It's a funny thing that if nobody wants any of these cars back WHY IS EVERY ONE OF THEM HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER COLLECTOR cars?????
Those are old cars
Nostalgia I guess.

And the diamond cutter in the back seat lol
@@kellismith4329 lol I had completely forgotten the diamond cutting uses for the Pacer ;-)
Ironically the Gremlin was originally designed on an airplane barf bag.

It was a great RWD platform, there are still some on the road here

I've had Fords that did this too. Yes no mechanic could figure it out. Normally this means you need a tune up but that wasn't the case.
Everybody I knew who owned a Pacer loved it, no matter what anybody said about them.
Some of the cars mentioned here may have been considered undesirable in its time, but car guys love them today!
I've worked on some of these cars in the 90s
Maverick, Volare, Aspen, Pacer and Gremlin, are you serious? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 from among my favorite.

I’m the happy host, who’s hung with the most, thought I don’t like to boast, I’m big as a post and waaaaarrrrmmm as toast !
The chevette, americas very own yugo.
You go get one
Damn cars were ugly back then!🤣🤣
The Vega was a very economical car especially after the engine tanked and and body rusted out when it was parked as paper wait in your driveway

Vo Lair drove me crazy.....it's pronounced VO LAR AY.......
I'm guessing it's already pointed out but the Plymouth Volare is pronounce vo-lar-ray. Not vol-air.
also forgot vw rabbit
It's pronounced Plymouth VOLAREEEE, like the popular song from the late 1950s.

Here's my list of the top shit boxes; # 1 Chevy Vega,#2 Ford Pinto,#3 Ford Maverick,#4 Plymouth Volare & the ugliest was the Ford Fairmont.
Not the AMC Pacer?
Couldn't comment on the Pacer because I knew no one that owned one.@@jamessmith2668
So...a vid about '70s cars starts with film of a Tucker and a Studebaker? I'm out. Just more internet "experts" running off at the mouth for clicks.
