  • Giant Hubs Episode 1: Munich Airport - Europe’s one and only 5-star-airport.
The Munich based Franz -Joseph-Strauss Airport is rated the only 5-Star airport in Europe. And it is also one of Europe´s biggest hubs. An average 1.100 flights have to be taken care of every day, 44.6 million passengers chose Munich as destination in 2017, either for holiday or business purposes or simply as a transit hub to another location.
The Munich Airport is a like a big machine, several hearts beat have to beat in the same pace to make sure that everything is running fine. How does this machine cope with an average of 120.000 passengers every day? What has to be done to guarantee the passengers safety. How is the endless flow of passengers and airplanes directed to move as smooth as possible?
This documentary takes a close look on those gears and sprockets that make a giant hub like Munich run efficiently and flawlessly. And it has access to several operational units that are usually restricted to the public eye.
1200 Federal police and 400 customs officers are in charge with guarding the German border and making sure that nothing illegal is being brought into the country.
Ramp Agents oversee baggage and cargo flows from the terminals to the airplanes.
The other way round, baggage handlers provide the passengers bags as fast as possible in the terminal. And, above all, the tower personnel ensures that airplanes do not collide during take-off or landing.

Well if you really want to put each on the cart carefully like you probably would. The first thing comes off is time. Imagine yourself in their shoes, say an Airbus A320 and two guys maximum lifting the bags and put them on the cart. We are talking about 100 plus bags possibly. Not all people but most will get it close to the limit weight so here comes the result. If you did end up getting into the waiting area it can be another half an hour before you receive your bags again. The other part is worker can get really tired, lifting that isn't a joke they are heavy as hell. The case was designed in such a way that a throw isn't going to break them, plus fragile items have a dedicated area to be handled.
Actually talking about rough, the conveyor belt in the background has much harder force than a baggage handler can do.

12:20 I've heard a few stories from a friend, who works at an airport, about US citizens, bringing hand guns in their luggage, and then claim "2nd amendment rights", untill they're told "that dosen't work outside the US".
Luckly, there's a few years between each case, the big question is "how did they get them ON the plane to begin with, don't they x-ray the bags or something?"
One of the most important things before travling to another country, is to check what you may/may NOT bring INTO the country, then what you may bring OUT of it, and then what you MAY AND MAY NOT bring into your own country for your trip home.
It sucks to be send back home, because you had something in your bag you were not allowed to, and equally sucks to have most of your souvenirs confiscated, because you're not allowed to import it.

      Is that a technical question?.
Just compare it with the services and facilities in T2 if i may suggest.

@@regularwarya well keep in mind that T1 was opened more than 10 years later and has a completly different layout and approach, also completly different purpose. Of course T1 doesn't seem as modern and impressive, hot honestly I see only ONE issue with T1 but that's nothing which bothers the normal traveller

After watching the African woman, the American dude, and two unattended dudes’ luggage and the way they have been handled, I must say it is the sweetest airport in the world.
