Overloading An Inverter (DC to AC Power Ratio): How does it work?

Most inverters let you oversize the array up to a point relative to the inverter AC output. We often call this overloading ratio or DC/AC ratio. I get questions like "how does that work?" and "how does that not damage the inverter?".
