A master-class in how to turn the process of making a brush into an art form, and a work of art in its own right. No wonder there are brushes in the Imperial treasury

Bought a couple of these (made in a more mass produced setting) and they work good with pen and ink drawing. Got them here in Portland, OR at the Uwajiama Market (large Japanese market).

I fooled with calligraphy in my youth. Went to Chinatown in NYC and bought a couple $30 brushes. Had a grinding stone and a stick of ink. My goal was to paint a perfect circle. It took 2 years but I finally painted a perfect circle about the size of a silver dollar. Sounds easy? Try it.

They will be challenged now like they have never been before. Previously, there would always have been a market for high quality brushes. But digital trends are diminishing that market fast. I hope we can find a way to keep around these ancient skills even in the digital age as those skills are valuable

0:44 It says "The protagonist this time" is because this is an episode of a series, all about young artisans inheriting and learning Japan's many artisanal crafts. It's on TH-cam but sadly it's only available in Japanese without any subtitles, which is a shame because the series is a wet dream for any woodworking enthusiast. It contains many episodes on different styles of Japanese lacquerware alone, from using gold powder to cutting stripes of oyster shell linings as decorations. They have Japanese traditional piano/harp, umbrella, and those boxes with paper veneer cut from gluing stripes of naturally coloured wood into complex patterns and more. Look up 明日への扉 by アットホーム if you are interested. Actually, you should definitely check it out, the language barrier shouldn't block you from understanding what the artisan is doing.

Am I the only one that thinks this is sorta sad? I think an important part of mastering any art is to love the art that you do. The way they sorta force each generation into doing the same work kinda takes creativity away.

A job is a job bud. But there's something about having to make something in with your hands and in a very specific way from beginning to end. If they've got pride in their work then it's probably not boring. Not exciting either, but likely enjoyable. On the other hand, if they're just making a living then yeah, it's definitely boring!

It is not only Americans. I am from a mixed Russian-American family, and I have seen some Russian people who behave in the same way, as well as people from several other countries with a similar opinion about their countries and their culture. In my opinion, this happens due to the lack of exposure to other cultures. Both too negative and too positive opinions about other cultures and other people are formed due to the lack of real knowledge about them.
