It's kinda funny that a under powered .357 sig rounds, is still way more powerful and damaging than most other rounds. Just shows how potent this caliber is. Thanks for the test. Have a wonderful day.
Any feeding issues? I still wonder about them hitting the ramp on a flute one round and a ridge on the next. They sound kind of clunky going in when fed from a locked back slide.
Awesome test. The disruption on the Defender was nuts! I was on the fence about picking up the 65gr Defender rounds. Not anymore, ordering a box this week. Thanks....
You will be getting the new 68 grain they still say 65 on the site but they are the new 68 grain and are loaded hotter than the old 65 grain by 200 fps faster
My word, AZ. That Xtreme Defender is just something else. I've always wanted to carry a rifle in a high ride holster. The ONLY thing that worries be about the defender is that amount of penetration. The disruption was nasty but I shudder to think about someone standing behind the intended target
That 65gr wound channel is wicked. Looking forward to a comparison test between the 65gr and 90gr XD. The Joint Agency Ballistics Handgun Ammunition Test 2016-2017 favored the 90gr due to barrier blindness. Search it YT blocks the links
Another great test. The 65 XD has a tendency to tumble and not track straight. I choose the Gold Dot. The added momentum also helps. If you shot a steel plate the GD would swing it more.
Try dubble tap 125 gr bonded I’ve got great results from it! think u might like it average speed from my Glock 33 was 1402 fps 😮 I can’t wait to try my Glock 35 with a 6” 357 sig barrel 😊
I have seen over the years the 357 sig 65 grain get 2200 FPS out of same size (4.5 inch) barrel or even 4 inch. So would agree this lot is much lower in power.
You are correct Underwood does vary somewhat in their loadings from one batch to another. You could actually do the 357 Sig folks a favor by testing their new batches to see how hot each batch is. Example the batch of "68gr" XDs that were put out last year were 150 fps faster than what you just tested. Several people found out about this on the interweb because of an individual who posted his velocity test results, the batch sold out shortly thereafter, with myself aiding the sellout!
@@AzAirgunner. The batch number on the 125gr GD looks to date back to around 2020. The batch number on the 65gr XD would date it back to around 2018. Underwood introduced their XD round in 2015.
These are both winners for personal protection. Not sure I would choose the Defender for bear protection. But I might consider the Gold Dot for black bear if I didn't have a larger caliber handgun. Thank you Sir.
I wonder how different chronographs would compare? Gun Sam_Revolver Aficionado clocked the Grizzly 90gr 357 Sig at around 1900 fps, while you got a max of 1842 fps for the Grizzly in an earlier test (could be barrel length). Your results are also considerably different than what I got from a friends chronograph. I chrono'd the 357 Sig 65gr Extreme Defender out of my 3.5inch barrelled P224 at 2126fps, 4 inch Glock 32 at 2178fps, and 4.4 inch P226 at 2289fps. These were the max velocities of two shots each. The P224 is my daily carry, and I carry two Grizzly Ammo 90 gr on top of 4 65gr Extreme Defenders and 4 115gr Extreme Penetrators. I think the Extreme Defenders are superior, but my concern is the potentially liberal progressive attitude towards exotic bullets if I end up in court. Grizzly Ammo rounds use a conventional hollow point, but are still very powerful (near hot 10mm energy) as demonstrated in both previous test. My assumption if I have to shoot more than two rounds I'll be shooting through some kind of barrier. I started carrying the Extreme Defenders/Penetrators after the truck attack in France. They won't stop a truck, but I suspect they will be more effective if I have to shoot through car glass and car doors.
He just did a 357 sig test with the Underwood 124gr Nosler projectile and the Underwood 125gr bonded Speer Gold Dot, and if I remember correctly he preferred the 124gr Nosler round. They just exolode upon entry and create some carnage that would be a surgeons nightmare. I run that Underwood 124gr Nosler +P+ in my 9mm and a factory loaded 125gr bonded Speer Gold Dot in my 357 sig. Might have to pick up a few more boxes of that 124gr Nosler for my 357sig though as that test he did the other day proves it's extremely devastating!
For 357 sig I actually like the 125gr Federal HST quite a bit, definitely one of my favorites. I have a ton of tests on it. As Nick said I very much like the 124gr nosler loaded by underwood. It's one nasty round for sure, always performs great. As for .40 s&w I really like the 180gr Ranger t-series. I have a bunch of tests on that also and it seems to do really well in short and full size barrels. Another one I like for .40 is the 155gr Federal HST, it's been discontinued but I have a good supply stash for a rainy day. I like em all though lol. Thanks for checkin this one out😁

Handgun rounds are handgun rounds. Has to be over 2200 ft per second to cause and explosive tissue damage. All you need is a good penetrating round. People die from blood loss from handgun rounds. They just poke holes. People get to cracked up about the ballistics on these rounds.
False. Irrespective of handguns or rifles, projectiles traveling at velocities exceeding 2,000 fps (not 2,200), can rupture surrounding hematopoetic / vascular organs through the process of shockwave dynamics, which extend to areas well beyond the permanent wound channel itself.
