My mother was a Moravian, born in Winston Salem, NC and she married my father Dr. Baxter S. Troutman, MD when he was interning at City Hospital in Winston Salem in 1936. My family of mom, dad, and 3 children moved to Lenoir, NC where we settled until my parents died. We were raised on Moravian cookies and always hung our Moravian Star every Christmas of our lives. Today I still have Moravian cookies and hang the Moravian Star every Christmas as our family tradition......I am now 83 years old. My 3 children and my 6 grand children share this heritage even today.

My dad's aunt used to make these and keep a bag in a lower cabinet in grandma's kitchen for us little ones to be able to help ourselves whenever we wanted. I loved those spice cookies and marveled at how paper thin they were. I looked my entire life to find a recipe that would be like her cookies with no success. Finally just a few years ago I learned that they are Moravian spice cookies. I am 67, and feel like I am 5 again now.

Some real weight loss needed here. Moravia, that's the Czechoslovakia, being born and raised in Eastern Europe : )).

Received some as a gift. Nice, airy crisp cookies. I got the sugar. Not made with real butter....oil instead and it is noticeable. Not rich flavor like say, Pepperidge Farm or Deweys cookies. Meh. Sorry, first time tasting, not impressed.
