Sanyasa is the highest perfectional stage in Varnashram. It is understood when a Sanyasi leaves the body, He has already successfully mastered all the stages of Varnashram: Brahmachari, Grihastha, Vanaprastha and last stage Sanyasa. As far as scriptural references, when I come across those (either from Srila Prabhupada's writings or as shown directly in the Vedic scriptures), I can cite those. So for now, I hope this will answer you inquiry.
