As a former adrenaline junkie with more than my share of near death experiences I can relate. My last near death experience laid me up in the hospital with several bones put back together with plates and screws. While laying there an old friend came to visit and said something to me that woke me up. He said "you are like cat with nine lives, but your problem is you are only 27 years old and you have already used up seven or eight of those lives". It hit me hard and I throttled back the danger dial from that point forward.
That's fuckin insane. What a story. I spent over a year in the hospital and an ungodly amount of time in rehab. I'm still going to rehab 11 years later. G-d bless. Been through it and it's dehumanizing when you can't take care of yourself and do simple, basic things. All you can do is push forward until the lights go out.
Electricity going across your chest usually kills you if the current is high enough. I was on a 14' step ladder up in a ceiling and a maintenance man he'd used a green wire as a neutral on a 277v circuit. It went through my hand and out my shoulder blade into the ceiling grid. I had the involuntary muscle contractions. But broke free. Almost passed out and fell. A lucky day for sure. Yep, tasting copper. It's actually the minerals in your blood being polarized by the current, causing you to taste it.
I had gone through a spinal surgery from my military injuries and went septic and lost the entire back of my neck and parts of my upper back. What more than likely prevented you from creating this enzyme was the previous head trauma that affects your thyroid that helps produce this particular enzyme. I topped out at what you describe as 1 to 10 at an eight, and my upper back and neck in just one day without notice starting pour liquid out of my upper back and back of my neck. I had been a Gunner’s Mate and worked with the Naval 5” Gun and had several hard concussions blast a few blasts from other weapons fire and also a tech on the vertical launch missile system. The doctors tested and I had severe hypothyroidism from brain trauma from the concussions. That still happens. Thank you for your dedication and service, I wish more service members can find solace in your story and survival. Best wishes to your family. I hope this information may answer the why of the how your body didn’t create this particular enzyme that normally your body makes to ensure that you sacrifice part of your body that’s dying to help, your survive these types of trauma.

My wife and I were talking about all of the shit I've gotten into growing up. Parachuting off the roof of my house with a lawn and leaf bag at 10. Riding dirt bikes through an old crack heads yard as he shot us with buckshot. Several broken bones, two knee reconstructions, surgeries from football. Bat fights, broomstick across the bridge of my nose, pool stick across the back etc. A little wild and stupid my first 25 years. I was telling her about all of the shit Shipley has been through. My experiences were nothing. We are now firm believers in Guardian Angels.
Amazing story. It's truly a miracle he’s alive! This reminded me of a close call I had when I worked as an electrician from ages 18 to 20 after graduating vocational school. Luckily, I never got electrocuted, but I had an experience that could’ve easily killed me. We were working in an old dairy factory that had been shut down since the 60s, which was set to be renovated into apartments. My task was to clear out an old distribution board in one of the machine rooms. I turned off what I thought was the power-unaware that these old boards had two switches, one by the terminal and another across the room. Being young naive and lazy, I didn’t check with my voltage meter to confirm the power was off. As I cleared most of the cables, one got stuck. I tried unscrewing it, but the threads were rusted. Frustrated, I yanked it. That’s when it happened-a massive boom, like a bomb went off right next to me. Smoke filled the room instantly, and the sharp, unforgettable smell of plasma. I felt this strange pressure in my chest, probably from the blast wave. For a few seconds, I couldn’t see or hear anything, and I genuinely thought I’d died. When I came to my senses, I checked my hands to make sure they were still there (thankfully, they were). I ran to open a window to clear the smoke. I called my boss and told him I thought I’d blown up the room. He said he thought he heard something and started laughing hysterically before asking if I was okay. The scariest part came later, realizing I’d been working in a live distribution board the entire time. That triggered a mini panic attack. By the end of that summer, I decided being an electrician wasn’t for me-guess I’m too big of a wimp, lol. Even now, the smell of something shorting takes me right back to that day.
I had a near death experience in a car accident that broke my sternum I swear I saw the light that I was dead and I saw it in slow motion and thought of my family and everything. 2 hours later I saw my dad at the end of my hospital bed and i said I'm sorry started crying.
That's one of the wildest electrical shock stories I've ever heard. I've been shocked several times by 277v and 480v, so I can't imagine what he felt. WOW!!
I’ve worked in construction since I was young helping my dad working for his company and we’ve done every trade when it comes to homes and as much as I have done electrical, I will never ever get comfortable being around electricity. It scares me every single time and that’s honestly the safest way to be in that industry. I was going to be an electrician for a living but I ended up going a different route for other reasons but I’m glad I don’t work with electricity everyday. I’ve been shocked many times but just little shocks replacing receptacles and stuff without turning the power off because I was dumb and lazy but electrical is one scary monster. Residential electrical is what was scary, most of commercial and industrial electrical is pulling wire and running conduit so it’s not as dangerous.
I worked for dish network. Customer had crappy electrical in their house and out of nowhere I could no longer let go of the customers receiver. I had electricity running through me for almost 10 seconds before the breaker finally blew. Horrible horrible pain.

Can't wait to see where your path takes you. Thank you for your service and your willingness to talk about it.
My neighbor was on the base of the ladder on a cherry-picker that got backed into a 15,000 volt overhead power line! You get basically half the voltage running through you. He yelled "I'm hit!" and jumped backwards off the truck with lightning running from his knees and toes to the truck! He had to take 5 days off to heal and he had a few rectangular scabs on his knee and big toe, but recovered. I've had 110, 220 and 440 volt shocks and fortunately I know how it feels to be that lucky and to still be here. Hang tough DJ. You have so far man!
The presence of mind to keep himself alive in that kind of situation where most people would just except the situation and go with what their bodies telling them to do just relax lay down go to sleep close your eyes just relax it’s ok and this man has the presence of mind to fight it in that situation and say no hyperventilate oxygen into his lungs force his eyes open try to move its truly remarkable
Most of my life I have had an extreme fear of electricity. I have seen and done many other dangerous activities. 13 years in te USMC, rappelling out of helicopters, cliffs, construction work off of very high buildings, SCUBA, free diving in the ocean, 24 years as a street cop with 5 years in narcotics. But electricity scares me. One day while I was working as a beat cop I bumped into an old high school friend of mine, were about 48 years old and 30 years out of high school. He said do you remember when you got shocked by aa 220 outlet? I said no, I do not remember that. He said when we were working at McDonalds in our senior year of school, I was either unplugging or plugging into 220 volt out let. It shocked me and sent me flying across the room and I slammed into a wall or something. I guess I was ok, I went back to work. I must have been in a daze`or had a concussion. After he told me about that incident, I got to thinking and I do kind of remember and I figured why I do not like messing around with electricity.
Okay, this is spooky. I do this kind of work. I've been a member of Don and Diane's site since the very beginning. I bought Don a cool T-Shirt, and sent Diane a few of my Lichtenberg panels, and made her some earrings. At the end of a video, about cleaning up the pool, to get it ready for summer, Diane showed the panels and the earrings I made for her as well, and thanked me. This was probably about 3-4 years ago. I don't know if you Shawn, read any of these comments, but just wanted to say God Bless you and your family, as well as the Shipleys. I say a prayer every time I'm about to work with my Lichtenberg machine.

These interviews teach us a much more serious, wider perspective on PTSD.. I watch these and the gravity of what they experience, hits me. It’s a life long condition that I now believe they all suffer, and they will live this for a lifetime. I have nothing but respect for their sacrifice.
People say just get over it, well they have never been in anything we the military veterans have gone through, there is no getting over it when the people who you work with every day all of a sudden they are dead, in pieces, you dont get over that, never.
@@ronringwald5120 the interview with the seal they called monster and a clip of real footage from a firefight made me realize how horrible and chaotic the sounds were. The stress of that coupled with loss of life is just unreal.

As a squad leader to gather all intel & body parts at the kill zone, civilians 1st off would not do the jobs we do in the military & they would not do them for our pay we receive, yet we are the country's defense against attack yet we are treated as veterans as 2nd class citizens in our own hospitals, we are lab rats for STUDENT DOCTORS TO WORK ON, why aren't we held to the highest degree of respect by this country we serve as volunteers, not drafted, why are we not the richest people in this country since we are the ones who give up EVERYTHING to serve, but get shit on when we get out, this govt should ensure we are held on that ground that we fought & died for, where is our respect, think about 22 a day & really what that means, I am a survivor twice of 22 a day, thank you its my honor to serve, BANG. People need to learn that PTSD isn't strictly a military thing.
My dad was a T&D and underground lineman in St. Louis for 23 years. I attended more than a few funerals with him at a young age for his co-workers.

12-18-1973 my father was electrocuted with 169,000volts for 18 seconds. He lived after dying 5 times.
Men like the Shipley’s re a different breed! To go through all the trauma and things DJ has gone through, and not only survive it, but to get back up, rehab, and say, “Let’s go again!” Tough minds!!!!
Even now, the smell of something shorting takes me right back to that day.
that really opened up my eyes , sometimes I take stupid short cuts, thank you .
I had a near death experience in a car accident that broke my sternum I swear I saw the light that I was dead and I saw it in slow motion and thought of my family and everything. 2 hours later I saw my dad at the end of my hospital bed and i said I'm sorry started crying.
I really enjoyed this on many levels. Shawn is such a great interviewer, just lets people talk and asks thoughtful questions.

That's one of the wildest electrical shock stories I've ever heard. I've been shocked several times by 277v and 480v, so I can't imagine what he felt. WOW!!
Is it worse? I’ve been lit up by 110 before. Is it worse cause the microwave set up?
It’s high voltage low amperage…277 and 480V are potentially far worse with much higher current 😯 It depends a lot on how well you are grounded
Situation is always different. A quick hit of 277 feels like someone hit you with a baseball bat

Wow
I'm thinking they put that level 3 trauma center two blocks away from his home, with D.J. in mind!😂
I was a trauma nurse and cardiac intensive care nurse for 30 yrs and I’ve seen too much shit. Yea, that was a bad one. Was he just lucky or was he given another chance? And why? I’ve had people tell me they were above the cart looking down at themselves and others standing by the cart.

I heard other members of Task Force Ranger say they had out of body experiences during the battle too. It is the first and last time that ever happened to me. Changed my entire outlook on life.
@@xr29fb32 I can’t say what it is, but I can only assume there is a reasonable explanation. People under normal circumstances are not good witnesses, and when near dead they are exponentially worse. The brain tends to fill in missing information from memories, so the feeling of floating over your body is more likely a construct of your brain when you eventually recouped.
Regardless, good thing you made it.
People don't believe that there's a spiritual life after this. They don't believe God exists, but there are story after stories of people experiencing life after death. And many talk about hovering above their body and seeing the nurses and doctors working on their lifeless body on the stretcher.
