- Well it was Groundhog Day 2021, so we had to drive up to Woodstock, IL for Groundhog Day filming locations! We nearly got snowed in in northern Illinois just like in the movie, but fortunately they know how to clear the streets (unlike in Nashville). It was pretty windy, so I decided to fix it with voiceover, but that should be a one time thing because I'm now the proud owner of an external microphone.
What a great town Woodstock is! So proud of their Hollywood heritage. Hope you enjoy!
Locations can be found by following the Groundhog Day Walking Tour. Map and information can be found here:

Awesome ! Loved this film so funny ! Awesome how you had the actor explain the back story. Funny how the weather is doing perfect for your video when expecting a snow storm in the film
Thanks Cyber Wolf! Even though I thought I was gonna get frostbite making this video, I'm glad it snowed at the perfect time, haha!
Superb!!! Hope to get there someday myself :)
It was definitely a great time!
Two of the most talented writers and Directors ever in the history of filmaking Harold Ramis and John Hughes, who chose to not only film their most iconic films in their beloved state of Illinois, but also both personally chose to live there
Speaking of John Hughes, the Woodstock square also appears in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The burned out rental car is towed right past the Courthouse and Dell and Neil hitch a ride with the truck driver right in front of the theater.
i like that they still do this
Been to Woodstock Several Times, I lived in Crystal lake Which is only about 10 Miles Away and Then lived in The Town for a Short Time before Moving to Elgin.
“Gobbler’s Knob” 😆😂🤣
Great movie! Thanks for sharing
Thank you for checking it out!
My uncle was the police chief of Woodstock, Illinois while this was being filmed. He has so many logistical stories about the filming of the movie.
Wow, Mark! I bet those are some great stories. I love hearing from people who were around the filming of such classic movies.
Brilliant, greetings from Rome.
this was one of my late dad's favorite movies. Great work. Thank you.
I was on set; 30 The years have flown by for me too.
The Movie Theater is A Real One, I Saw Independence Day and The 1st Mission Impossible There.
They also show Groundhog Day every year, but we didn’t get to watch it because they were still closed for covid, unfortunately… Next time though!
Excellent video. One of my favorite comedy movies of all time. I went to this town. One of my favorite filming sites. I even stayed in the exact same Bill Murray's character room at the Royal Victorian Manor.
Thanks Herve!! I wanted to stay in there so bad, but we had the dogs with us. Next time we will definitely have to stay there!
I so much enjoyed this video... Always wondered where the movie was shot since I saw it for the first time in 1993, because it looked so romantic and it still does. One day I'll make a trip to Woodstock, anyway. Classy video, thank you so much!
Thank you, Ma Val! I wholeheartedly recommend visiting Woodstock. It is a great town!
My Sister Met Bil Maurry during filming,I went to The Town but filming was almost done by Then.
That would have been awesome! I’d like to meet Bill Murray one day.
This was really awesome!! You and your wife are a great team. I love how you guys put these videos together...Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing...:)
Thank you so much again, KJ! Many more videos to come!!!
Really great, on point, you have a strong and unique creative touch as a couple.
Thank you!!!
Great video. You got the same weather conditions with snow. One of my favorite comedy movie, I can watch it over and over with the same joy...like it was the first time ...:)
Thank you! We definitely got lucky (or unlucky) with the timing of that snowstorm
A couple other Stephen Tobolowsky films he had smaller parts in that I loved were 'The Philadelphia Experiment' (watched that so many times as a teen and even in my adult years) and 'Basic Instinct'.
Thanks for this! My fave movie of all time.
Thanks for watching, burrito kingdom!
Excellent work guys really enjoyed it ❤
I was in Woodstock the Summer of 1994. Being a big fan of the film, I took my own 8mm video of the town, and it looked exactly like the movie, being that it was only a year before that.
Oh man, I bet that footage is amazing!
@@GoingtotheMovies It was. Funny enough, when I got older, I worked in Hollywood and eventually at The Writer's Guild. There was a survey that went out to most screen and TV writers to vote the best written screenplays. "Groundhog Day" was voted #2.
Being from PA, it always annoyed me it wasn't filmed in PA!
Wish I could've visited that place last year for the 30th anniversary of the movie.
I was just there a week ago! 😂😂 I live like 30 min away and we visit the city often just to walk around and see where was it filmed.
Thank you so much for this ❤
Awesome job!!! You guys rocked it!!😊😊
Exactly What I wanted to see and know was all showed and told in this video!
So good Ryan!!!! Thanks for sharing!
great job. Keep it up and thanks for this. Never gets old!
Thank you!
THANKS ! ! !
One of my Favorite Movies !!
Great Job ! ! ! !
Thanks, Randy!! 🙏
Great work! Love it!
Would love to go there one day ! I live in Nottingham England so I'd hate to think how much a trip would cost and I'd definitely have to stay in the Cherry B and B ! I celebrate Groundhog day every year but no-one over here gets it and they think I'm nuts ! 🤣🤣🤣
Happy Groundhog Day! If you’re ever able to make it there, it’s totally worth it!
That was excellent 👏
You guys are knocking it out of the park!!!
Another excellent video!
Awesome loving these locations.. You should come out to Delaware and do the Locations For Dead Poets Society.. There pretty cool places
Hey, that’s a great idea! I’d love to do that one
@@GoingtotheMovies yea i only live about 35 mins from those locations. It's cool to know that the only film to be entirely filmed in this state was a Robin William's Movie and one of my favs
That is definitely a good one!! I wonder what else has shot in Delaware 🤔
@@GoingtotheMovies bot much I know Dead Poets Society was the only filmed entirely here. I believe there was a few movies that had small scenes here tho
Another awesome job 👍🏼
Thank you, YT1300Pilot!!
Very nice! There is one spot that's actually much closer to Ramis house, but a trek from Woodstock. It's the Amstutz Expressway (road to nowhere) in Waukegan/North Chicago where they're stranded on the highway. It was also used in Dark Knight and Transformers.
Of course while you're up there you can film the motel where Steve Martin and John Candy backed through the front located on Stearns School and 41 in Gurnee. Also the Married With Children House in Deerfield and the Home Alone house in Winnetka.
Great channel!! Best of everything to you!!
Hey Anthony, thanks for the tips! I have been to many of the John Hughes spots but that was all before TH-cam. I’m going to have to go up there and make videos for all of those!
@@GoingtotheMovies I've filmed them all when we lived there, I just haven't put them on my channel. There's hundreds of others, including the building I worked at which was a recurring set for Shameless and appeared in several movies including the Dark Knight.
Safe travels and happy filming!!
I was just thinking about Waukegan and remembered that one of the more famous people from that area is Jack Benny. Now he never, as far as I know, filmed anything in Waukegan, but his radio shows he is constantly talking about Waukegan in one form or another.
Just kind of an add-on to the other mentions of that area of Illinois.
@@TheOpendoormedia Thank you! Yes, in fact I went there and did a short video on his childhood home in Waukegan a few weeks ago.
Great video! I like your editing technique. 👍🏼
Much appreciated man! Hoping to learn more and more tricks as I go
I found out recently that Ned's actor was also in Mississippi Burning.
Wow new ryerson he looks great and a really nice guy as well.
Thanks for the video....
Irs one of my favourite films 🎥
No one I can see has done cocktail yet! Or at least not very good!
Is this in the pipeline?
Possibly! I need to research it!
I've been to Illinois for a funeral. So cold my diesel truck needed an electrical cord to keep the engine warm. Brutally cold in January.
Looks like bullworth from the game bully
You should fix your title. It's Harold "Ramis", not "Ramos".
Oh wow. I’m surprised it took 3 years for someone to notice that. Fixed it 👍
Ned looks and sounds the same 😂
The real Gobblers Knob is not “way up in the mountains” like Ned said.
But you didnt get hit on the back of you’re head with the shovel when you were on the phone 👎
Fun seeing people wearing masks. A horrible moment in history hopefully never to occur. I almost forgot about it
Didn’t help the virus, but definitely helped keep us warm in a snowstorm
Feb of 2021 they were all still wearing masks. Lol
Comes in handy when it’s 20 degrees and windy
What is with the silly and dangerous mask? Extremely dangerous to your health!
It was for the cold but good try 😉
@@GoingtotheMovies no good try, restricted breathing is not good. Plain and simple
@@henrygarza3145 it’s gonna be tough, but I think I’ll make it
I love this video you did but you should have done it without the masks! Just saying as nobody needed to wear them!
It was in the 20s with winds anywhere from 7-10 mph. I’d say they were VERY helpful.
STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY: I'm writing a script for a horror film I want you to star in. You'd play a corrupt politician who gets brutally murdered while out campaigning in a town that DOESN'T really exist. You would only be in the first 10-minutes, but it's one of the BEST characters in the film.
