The OD 3 is the first overdrive I bought and I still have, and use it. If I'm going to a jam session, I usually just grab a small amp and the OD 3 and I'm good to go. I love the "bloom" you get from this pedal. Its like compression, but you don't loose the attack. Its really great for playing slide!
@@Unusednickname_1970 If you love this pedal, there is another that I highly recommend you try. Its the one that kicked the OD 3 off of my main board when I was gigging. Namely, the Lovepedal OD 11. Lovepedal don't make the model anymore, but you can pick them up on Reverb for not much money. Really the best " Transparent" overdrive out there, and I've tried them all!
As a mostly rhythm player in the style of Guthrie, Summers, Marr, this is my favorite always on pedal. With a Gretsch or Tele going into a Jazz Chorus and the gain set all the way down it just makes the sound bloom and chime with sustain. The clarity is amazing. Pushes the Suhr Riot well.
Been using an OD-3 since they came out, and as Jordanbreroberts mentioned below it stacks super well with a TS9 Tubescreamer. A classic that keeps on giving.
I've got this on my board and I'm always thinking of getting some other drive pedals, but then I always remember that it does pretty much everything I want it to.
Thanks Shane. This was my first pedal. I've heard so much about the Super Overdrive, Blues Driver, and Distortion over the years that I forgot about it. I'm curious what it sounds like into a high gain amp like a dual rectifier.
I’ve grown into the OD-3. First acquired the OD-1, SD-1, and now this. It’s always on my board. I’ve tried to replace it with a newer pedal but it always finds its way back on the board. It’s got so much headroom!!
this is my favorite overdrive for low to mid gain stuff...country, blues, classic rock, through the clean channel of my peavey bandit "red stripe". it turns it into a very voxy thing, that's really reacts to single coils well. It's def not a "marshallizer" so i do keep a plexi in a box pedal around for times when its needed....but by far...this is my favorite od through the clean channel of an amp.
Cool -deal. Especially like how I can set it for unity output into a true clean amp, and get a nice crunch. It’s like adding a second channel to the amp. Plus it also works quite well as an overdrive
Cool pedal! I own many Boss pedals, but not the OD-3. The ones that I use all the time are SD-1 before BD-2 and occasionally DS-2. I believe BD-2 might be close to OD-3 (?) and I believe that I can achieve the sounds I need with my current pedals.
@@notoredplague8277 I'm not sure if the SD-1 more aggressive but it sure has more of a mid-hump. The OD-3, as you say, has a warmer tone and maybe more of a scooped profile. Everyone should get one haha...It's a very underrated pedal.
@@tollan23it’s just a matter of opinion, I suppose, but I also consider the SD-1 to be more “aggressive”. The OD-3 has smoother clipping to my ears. Regardless, they’re very different IMO, and both great for different reasons.
Ha, I had mine for over 20 years and it's the only overdrive pedal that has remained without interruption. My preferred way is to use it in front of a tube amp clean channel with the pedal at relatively low drive (9 to 10 o'clock). Depending how you set the tube amp's gain it changes the tone of the amp. You can also use even lower drive settings to change the color of the clean tones. It is a bit of a forgotten overdrive pedal these days but it is super versatile. The only other drive pedal i use is a JHS AT+ because it gives a very different sound. I have to say though that the demo sounds here don't really do it justice :) You can get way better tones with it than what is shown here.
Good stuff Shane! I've never used one, but it if I was getting a Boss dirt pedal, this would be it for sure. I still use an old analog delay and phaser from Boss, but overdrive and boost is from Ulbrick.
I owned one and should have kept it. This and the blues driver are better than majority of all pedals. The od3 is perfect for classic rock cranked and a great boost if u want a brighter one. A ts808 boosting one is all u the tones u need. Clean, boost, boosted gain and regular gain. I’ve done it many times at gigs.
I love the OD-3. I think of it as the poor mans MIAB pedal. I know Boss has others specifically for that, but this thing has some grind - such a great pedal.
Videos do not really capture the differences well enough, I've got a BD-2 an OD-3, both are great, but really different in tone and gain, especially when you start nearing stage volume.
The OD3 sure is a classic, but for a little more versatility I go with the SD2, which while sadly discontinued, can be found secondhand for not crazy amounts of money.
Yeah I think he has a specific way of processing things, something about his room or his daw or interface or torpedo captor, it kinda makes everything sound the same with Shane’s videos. It’s a great sound it just is very different than what you’d hear in a room I think
The end all answer to this question is that all these pedals have the potential to be the ideal pedal to use depending on the situation. The No-Balls ODR-1 just happens to be "the one" more often than the rest.
Could you guys recommend any other pedal that is close in feel and tone to the od3? I say that because i already own the OD3 but im reluctant to buy another one to set in my secondary board 😂 (ps: already got sd1, ts9, klone, bd2)
DS-1 actually sounds good through the classic 50. I used to have the classic 50 tweed head. about 20 years ago. first and only amp I have ever liked the DS-1 through. Blues driver has been my main pedal.
5:05 This is a good example of the limitations of trying to judge the tone on gear by any video or sound clip. Listening to it from the video, the difference with the guitar volume at half vs full wasnt very dramatic. Whereas I know from experience that if we were in that room with the amp, the difference would be night and day. Beyond the EQ curve a lot of the tonal characteristics gets lost in translation. With that said, while I'm a purist at heart when it comes to Teles, Strats, Gibson, etc; the twin rails in the neck on that Tele sounds miles better than a traditional Television neck pup could ever hope.
Mine are incredibly loud, is that your view too? At nine o'clock they're about even volume. Have tried several and run it always on as my normal sound through a state amp.

It’s funny, really, how much this proves that some circuits are just great and need no updating or modification. This sounds amazing.
the od3 needs one, small but needs one, to contain the bass.... it's only a cap

Spot on. The subtle compression and smooth clipping are what I love about it.

this is the best demo video of this pedal on yt! well done, shane.
Thanks, Atomic!
It's a boutique overdrive pedal without a boutique price. An icon 👌
Kind of an ambiguous term. The opposite of boutique really

I just bought one of these! Is absolutely fantastic and recreates the sounds of my vintage Princeton on ten!
Awesome. Well done, its a fun pedal.
Exactly that IS what IT does. Best of ever.
a bit too bright for Princeton tone, I have both , not the closest to y ears, a Timmy is closer for example
Thanks man - always love the videos
30 seconds in and I’m sold!!! Still holds up today!!!!🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
OD-3 is the gold standard. I always come back to it when I need a refresh
Just found one at my local pawn shop. I love my BOSS pedals, and this one fits in nicely between the BD-2 and the SD-1 😀
My favorite low gain OD. As good as any expensive “boutique” OD in my experience.
Great demo!
The BD-2 and OD-3 are my drive pedals! I don't think I will need any others...I've been through eeeeverything
I've got this on my board and I'm always thinking of getting some other drive pedals, but then I always remember that it does pretty much everything I want it to.
It’s sounds amazing especially with the humbuckers. I have had my eye on one of these for a long time.
I love this pedal.
I have 2. 1 on a board and 1 just free so I can grab it and small amp and go to a jam.
Thanks Shane. This was my first pedal. I've heard so much about the Super Overdrive, Blues Driver, and Distortion over the years that I forgot about it. I'm curious what it sounds like into a high gain amp like a dual rectifier.

...and it matches your Tele! It also plays well with others (BD2).
If you stack this into either a DS-1 distortion pedal with gain turned down it really surprises you!
With fuzz before it is also good.
Never did my fuzz sounded good before having it.
it's just SO GOOD!
Cool vid! I’m a big fan of Boss pedals. My SD1 and Angry Driver are two of my favourites. I’ve never owned an OD3 but that could change soon lol
Sounds gnarly. I like it!

OD3 and the Tele bridge was stellar ❤

I like it a lot! To me it’s a refinement on all the things I don’t like about the tube screamer.
The bass version is as equally amazing!

If not mistaken they all have completely different schematic
As an SD-1 user, I’d like to see a comparison between these two pedals.
They're very different, really.
The SD1 is way more aggressive, better for a tube amp imho. The OD3 has a warmer sound, it works fantastic even with solid state amps.
@@notoredplague8277 I'm not sure if the SD-1 more aggressive but it sure has more of a mid-hump. The OD-3, as you say, has a warmer tone and maybe more of a scooped profile. Everyone should get one haha...It's a very underrated pedal.

Luv that peddle!
I wonder how it pairs with a solid state/analog amp cranked?
SD-1 boosting and OD-3 is an awesome lead tone

The OD-3 is Boss’ best overdrive. No contest.
OD-3 sounds great, never used one, want to try it with my Gibson dual rail minis., and P90s.
Sounds great with both guitars!
Can you share what pickups you have in your Strat? I assume those are SD hot rails in the tele.
Great video as usual!
Sounds great stacked with a TS9 as well!
Fanx for demo. My SD-1 will get use. I'm a distortion user only.

it works handsomely after a fuzz face style pedal.
I think I would just get a Blues Driver instead, especially if I could only fit one overdrive on my board.

Fuzz face with low fuzz setting or turned down guitar does loads
