    I have been using these Petronix electronic ignitions in my VWs for the past 25 years. They are much more convenient than using the points, and seem to give my engine a much smoother idle and acceleration. Can't live without them!

    Been using Petronix in my Thing for two years and no problems. I switched for the same reason. I'm a fan of points but the new ones just are not as good. You didn't show setting the gap between the module and magnetic ring with the plastic gap tool included. Also adding a tiny bit of dielectric grease between the mounting plate and the module can help prevent it from getting overheated. I carry a spare petronix module instead of points or another distributor. I've replaced dozens of modules in GM HEI distributors and always carried a spare in those cars and trucks we had over the years. I've had Ford and Mopar electronic modules fail too. Never decided to convert those cars to points. Things break and we fix them. Having fun with old cars and expecting problems and being prepared, staying calm and problem solving is just one of the things that make VW Life one of the best channels on TH-cam. Thank you for another great episode.

    Great post. My 1641 had it's flat spot with the original 009 even with electronic ignition. Changed over to PerTronix vac advance distributor w/electronic ignition and quite a measurable difference was noticed especially going slower in low gears and giving her the gas. No more staggering to get a move on. Keeping the 009/electronic ignition w/o vac advance in the frunk as a back up.

    One thing that this video reminded me of is spark plugs. I have switched to NGK Irdium plugs. They make a really big difference. They improve fuel economy and improve power. On my '86 Doka Syncro my fuel economy went from 17 to just under 22 mpg, and the power up hills was noticeably better. I have a 2.7 liter waterboxer from GoWesty in this. In my '73 bug with a 2110 cc engine, I had similar results. Not as much improvement on the fuel economy, but you should could feel the difference on acceleration and going up steep grades. Even for a stock or close to stock engine, you'll get much better results. For you guys driving these old buses, you will definitely notice the difference.

    Nice vlog boys! Ive had the Pertronix in my 72 beetle for years, for whatever reason I had to switch plug wires but runs great, the only thing you have to be careful is leaving the key in the on position with out the motor running, they say that will burn out the module, then your screwed, and there not cheep Good idea to carry the old dis. set up and ready to go. Happy Memorial Day to you and the gang!
    FYI, I finished fabricating all new windshield channel (bottom and both lower curves) and just sprayed the nose, that looks brand new, unlike the rest of the van! Now the dash is back in and just hooking back up everything. Cant wait to get her back out on the road!

    I fitted a pertronics unit into my v8 holden van , Whilst it did eventually fail after about 10 years, it didnt just stop , started misfiring periodically, gave me plenty of warning . It continued to run for the next three weeks until a new one was posted to Australia. Now comes the stupid part, I went on an interstate trip with the new unit in the glove box instead of installed. It finally failed in the middle of a forest, in the middle of the night, in the middle of winter , in the rain. What a joy , replacing it by torch light, whilst soaking wet and freezing.

  • @austinswallow

    We have the same problem in the UK with duff points from both "Lucas" & "Bosch", not only that, but condensers and rotor arms. I think the problem is that they are no longer "Made in England" or "Made in Germany", they might be packaged as such, but they come from China or some other place where manufacturing quality is to a poor standard. Here in the UK we have a "Distributor Doctor" and he made good quality rotor arms and coloured them red, the faker then started to do them red, so he now stamps them with "DD", buy from him directly, buy genuine.
    I had Pertronix on my 1965 Rover - 16 years, no problem, it was positive earth, so a different kit, I did once make a mistake and reconnected the battery around the wrong way (a momentary lapse), wouldn't start, took me a while to figure it out, when I realised my mistake, it was 'oh no', all the electronics will be fried, but no, it started right up, lesser ignition kits would have failed (Made in China...), but buy quality "Made in USA" it works, any car I get, it is Pertronix always, even on vintage cars, they make a kit!
    Pity Gary did not put the plastic sleeve on those Lucar connectors!
    Why didn't you just turn the engine over 180-degrees to get the position marks back in synch? It doesn't matter, although it helps to get the plug leads in the correct order - how did that happen!!!
    Thanks for sharing, greetings from the UK!

    I was coming home from our club event in my '79 Super and took about a 3 mile detour to see where someone lived and then continued on and the engine died within a mile of home. The piece that opens the points didn't wear, it just cracked and flopped over. When I got my '67 bug I installed an EMPI distributor with "electronic" ignition and it just burned up one day. It now has a Pertronix installed. Years ago I had a Pertronix in my '69 bug and it worked great.

      The problem is with the points 😂. There are 3 different types of 044 type points. You can still get the good ones but they cost about $17.00. The other 2 types have either black or white plastic friction blocks and are garbage. Think with your brain instead of your wallet. It solves most problems before they happen.

The electronic ignition amplifier $120, would melt in the Round Rock heat in the Texas summer, leaving me dead in the water. Until I installed a new electronic ignition amplifier. No Bueno. I’ll be curious to see how your Pertronix set up serves you. I set the new Bosch points in my 1976 VW Riviera about 8 years ago and no problems. I must have gotten new old stock Bosch points from The Bus Depot. But thanks for the warning about the change in quality of Bosch points. Ragafritz! Pardon my French.😎

Reading up on it, it sounds like it’s cause a voltage drop at the coil and the suggestion instead is to run the red white to a keyed source for 6v. Any tips on what the best setup for that is on a stock 1200?

    Update: the pertronix coil I was running is the #40511 oil filled and SHOULD NOT be mounted upside down as most of our regular coils are. If you are going to mount it in the stock location (which is upside down) then order the Epoxy filled #40611. This is a $50 lesson that I have learned. VW Life at it's best!

    Uncle Tony's Garage has seen the same problem with points on his various Mopars...apparently the Eichlin points sold at NAPA still have a "proper" rubbing block and don't suffer from premature wear I get the appeal of replacing them with an electronic ignition but if the quality of other aftermarket parts is going down the toilet, how do we know the same can't be said for the quality of Pertronix's stuff?

    • @VWLifeVW

Well Chris it's definitely a concern, that's why we are going to thoroughly test these points and get back to you if we have problems. you might find different kids of dwell meters so don't worry too much about brand or style. once you find one you just want the reading to be between 48-52. and remember the higher the gap the smaller the dwell.

      Lot's of guys have been having great Success with the FiTech systems. I like the FUEL TECH setup .. but run an old CB quicktune in the 68.. Done right most of those systems are very useable.. Thanks for watching, Tommie

    Hi guys. Just wondering if I swap back to the old distributor with points in an emergency do I have to swap back to the old coil too?

    • @VWLifeVW
      @VWLifeVW  ปีที่แล้ว

      as long as you use a 3 OHM coil you can go to back to points. it's the low 0.3 ohm coils that will burn up points/condensers

  • @jeremiahlord6094
    @jeremiahlord6094 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you/do you have leakage coming from the coil? I got the same model coil and it started to leak(not even 1 year old).. I just had to swap to the epoxy flamethrower. They wouldn't accept warranty because it was mounted upside-downish...

    • @VWLifeVW
      @VWLifeVW  ปีที่แล้ว

      No not yet but it's basically still new

    Finally had a chance to install my new electronic ignition system. It all went flawlessly.
    But wait, now 2 months later and under 500 miles on this setup, the Flame-Thrower ignition coil has stopped working. Primary resistance is 0 ohms instead of 3 ohms. POS!
    Had to go back to my original coil and points & condenser distributor setup. So much for trouble free ignition system!

    Question, can you still conduct static timing with electronic points?

    • @tommiesmith3369
      @tommiesmith3369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. it just doesn't work as simple because it's using the Hall Effect to trigger the coil discharge- timing light is obviously the better way to go.

    What is your opinion on Accu spark ⚡️?

  • @moss1transcendant
    @moss1transcendant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The pertronix gear are matched impedance which are different to the stock VW ignition parts and that's why you can't mix n match in general.

    • @vayabroder729
      @vayabroder729 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the Bosch blue coil works; as long as the resistance is within the Pertronix operating parameters.

    So what's the advantages to vacuum advance distributor to a 009 ? i have be running pertronix electronic distributor for year's without there spark plug wire or coil is there really that big of difference with there coil and there wire's ? Great video ! Thank you !

      a more smooth power curve is what i understand.

    • @Wiencourager
      @Wiencourager 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Optimum timing is dependent on engine. Load, at light loads you can run more advance. A centrifugal only 009 cannot adjust to engine load. You get better throttle response m and better highway mileage. But you need a carb that proves the correct vacuum signal.

    I only wish that aftermarket electrical parts for VW's would use the VW color codes. Black instead of red for positive, and brown instead of black for ground. I get confused between the VW color code and the GM color code, which is what these parts are following.
