@Desi Boi personally I’ve only used it to submit assignments. I find it a waste of time since I’m doing unnecessary more amount of work that if I just scan to a pdf my pencil solutions on paper. Though maybe in the long term it’ll actually be worth something being familiar with LaTex, as for now it gets frustrating completing my solutions on paper then having to copy and paste in LaTeX for 1-4 hours.
@@manny5716 The best way to look at your situation is to recognize that you are getting 1-4 hours of latex experience every time you submit an assignment. That's super beneficial for you because you can start using latex in the future to make super professional looking documents.
Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I have been using Mathjax for a long time but I have only recently starting using Latex. There are two points I want to make about the calculus notation section. For \sum, it is unnecessary to use \sum\limits because the limits are already lined up on the bottom and top. We only need \limits if we are using capital sigma, \Sigma, for our sum. I don't recommend that because \sum looks much better than \Sigma\limits when it is typeset. For vectors expressed as a linear combination of unit vectors, i.e. i, j and k, we can use the \hat notation to get the symbol for a unit vector. For example, \vec v = a\hat i + b\hat j + c\hat k will give the hat notation instead of the arrow notation to stress that i, j and k are unit vectors.
I thought LaTeX is sime kinda a markup language,. But this is awesome. I used to search for unicode for a specific math symbol and paste it on my document. I found a way to add them all like this one. Thank you.

I would dispute your claim of "focus on the content rather than appearance" - it's just that the author needs not to _worry_ about appearance. One of design goals of TeX (and macto packages such as LaTeX) is to produce perfectly typeset document looking in accordance to, say, visual standards of a particular journal, But the author does not have to think whch font style and size, margins etc to use for, say, abstract. Marking it as the abstract suffices.
This is how SGML came to be, essentially. Content was handled separately from format. Later, hypertext links would be added, and we would see this as HTML. With Teχ and LaTeχ, you can focus on the content, knowing that the format will mostly adhere to some standard. Can you change it? Of course. But you can address that later. Even in Word, I frequently write in Outline mode, so I can bang out content. I go back later to format it.
@@argonwheatbelly637 Yes (although the early focus of SGML was on semantics, not presentation, much as is the case with its much simplified offspring XML.) Actually, to some extent, even MS Word allows for that "separation of concerns" approach, if styles are handled properly. troff and friends employed the separation of form and content in early '70s. Early desktop publishing programs led people astray by believing that WYSIWYG is _the_ thing, and all of a sudden they were fiddling with fonts and margins and whatnot, instead of focusing on content.

We use this to submit all our computer science assignments, it adds 1-4 hours just re-typing your work from pencil to LaTeX.

Though maybe in the long term it’ll actually be worth something being familiar with LaTex, as for now it gets frustrating completing my solutions on paper then having to copy and paste in LaTeX for 1-4 hours.

@@manny5716 The best way to look at your situation is to recognize that you are getting 1-4 hours of latex experience every time you submit an assignment. That's super beneficial for you because you can start using latex in the future to make super professional looking documents.
Maybe you can make use of macros to speed this up.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I have been using Mathjax for a long time but I have only recently starting using Latex. There are two points I want to make about the calculus notation section.
For \sum, it is unnecessary to use \sum\limits because the limits are already lined up on the bottom and top. We only need \limits if we are using capital sigma, \Sigma, for our sum. I don't recommend that because \sum looks much better than \Sigma\limits when it is typeset.
For vectors expressed as a linear combination of unit vectors, i.e. i, j and k, we can use the \hat notation to get the symbol for a unit vector. For example, \vec v = a\hat i + b\hat j + c\hat k will give the hat notation instead of the arrow notation to stress that i, j and k are unit vectors.
I used TeX in the 90's for my OU Electromagnetism course. Today I use my Android tablet or smartphone. Windows & MacOS are so passé.

One thing I noticed, was that I could simply type the < and > on my keyboard to get the left and right angle brackets and it compiled just fine. I don’t know if that was specific to my keyboard? I’m on a Mac laptop.

I would dispute your claim of "focus on the content rather than appearance" - it's just that the author needs not to _worry_ about appearance. One of design goals of TeX (and macto packages such as LaTeX) is to produce perfectly typeset document looking in accordance to, say, visual standards of a particular journal, But the author does not have to think whch font style and size, margins etc to use for, say, abstract. Marking it as the abstract suffices.
This is how SGML came to be, essentially. Content was handled separately from format. Later, hypertext links would be added, and we would see this as HTML. With Teχ and LaTeχ, you can focus on the content, knowing that the format will mostly adhere to some standard. Can you change it? Of course. But you can address that later.
Even in Word, I frequently write in Outline mode, so I can bang out content. I go back later to format it.
@@argonwheatbelly637 Yes (although the early focus of SGML was on semantics, not presentation, much as is the case with its much simplified offspring XML.) Actually, to some extent, even MS Word allows for that "separation of concerns" approach, if styles are handled properly. troff and friends employed the separation of form and content in early '70s.
Early desktop publishing programs led people astray by believing that WYSIWYG is _the_ thing, and all of a sudden they were fiddling with fonts and margins and whatnot, instead of focusing on content.
