This song is about how an addict is controlled by drugs. The drug is the master and the addict is the puppet. Think of this song as the drug singing to the addict.

    • @batteen92
      @batteen92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +582

Also the song mirrors the feeling of the peaks and valleys of addiction, with the first two verses and chorus representing the frantic need for the next hit, the first solo (with the softer guitars) representing the calming euphoria post consumption, the second much heavier solo representing the violent and painful feeling of coming down or the hangover, and the last verse and chorus starts the cycle over again.

This song is universal concerning the human condition-about anything negative & obsessive that you choose to allow to control you & that ultimately destroys your dreams & life. The first & last parts are the master or thing controlling a person speaking while the middle part is the puppet or person controlled speaking-these changes lyrically are also simultaneously reflected in the changes musically. A true work of art! A musical masterpiece in form & function!

The speed of metal can be hard to get into until you've listened to it a few times, once you are used to it it will slow down to your ears and you can understand the lyrics and hear all the intricacies of the instruments. If you are into football think of it like that, you know how they say that when a player comes from college to the NFL the game is fast for them, but as they get used to it the game slows down for them.

The 2nd reaction they'd know ahead it was about drugs and each lyric would drop like a hammer. And we'd also get to see that look of realization that when the beautiful interlude shows up that they're hearing the addict's momentary high before it comes crashing down again.

Many people spoke of the addiction and the highs and lows of chasing a high. Metallica always tells a story, this one was about addiction and the way and addict craves.ive always seen the begining as the addict is craving their drug, gets it and at the sharp drop off, the euphoria that kicks in is shown by the change in music, followed by the racing high and then the crash, and the final they're back on the search again while it is slowing owning and destroying them while the"now I rule you too" lyrics represent another addict joining the many under the away of an addiction. Ty for doing this and now subscribed.

Let me give you a tiny story time related to this song..
So, when I when I was in 5th grade, it was Friday and we were doing some kind of game with music where our teacher would put on a few songs and we'd have to write down what instruments we think are in it, the genre, mood, where you'd hear it and if you like it. (we'd usually do this on Fridays) Master of Puppets was one of them and I think I was the only girl in class to like this song and jam to it (not knowing the actual meaning of it) and it was kinda surprising that only a few of the boys liked it. One reason why I liked it was because my dad would listen to these 80s and 70s songs all the time so as time passed I started to like them aswell. Now, when the teacher replayed the songs from last time of doing this and that day and then asked us to raise our hand on whatever song we liked most, she *was* very surprised by our likings(I rasied mine on Master of Puppets-). Now I'm coming back to this song knowing the actual meaning mostly because of some of the comments, and I'm surprised that the teacher even let us listen to it. (Though Idk if she knew the meaning of it)

The clue is in the album cover. Puppeteers hands at the top of the cover, connecting strings to grave stones. Also the line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" - is a bit of a dead give away. Hel maybe it is also about having and all day English breakfast, although you would normally us a plate for that. 😀

Literally being an addict. Some of the best ways in the combat for self love, you have to address your problems to conquer. Addiction has its waves, like the change up in the middle. Mellow sounds, the trip of a high. Then you start coming down, the drums become more aggressive like your heart in a high anxiety moment. Things get worse and more chaotic like when withdrawals kick in. Then we come back to the intro which signifies the voice in the back of your head, the dopamine gland signaling the answer to your brain. The lyrics are primarily the representation of the drug talking to the addict convincing them to use them so they can take control over your life, enslaving you to it.

Lyrics are from the point of view of Addiction, which controls you like you're a puppet and loves to hurt you bad. Basically.

All due respect, I am amazed at how many people don’t understand this song is an anti drug song. It’s understandable to not grasp it in this in this scenario obviously, but I know people who have listened to this song for decades and still don’t see it.
The first part is the drugs or “master” luring you in (life of death becoming clearer/chop your breakfast on a mirror/you’re dedicated to/how I’m killing you).
Then after the slow breakdown it gives the addicts perspective (where’s the dreams that I’ve been after/promise only lies/all I hear is laughter).
Then it gets back into the master’s role (Hell is worth all that/Natural habitat/Just a rhyme without a reason/Never-ending maze/Drift on numbered days/Now your life is out of season).
This song is so well written and accurate regarding its portrayal of addiction. The hard and fast musical sections contrasting the slow and peaceful sections reflect the ups and downs of getting high. The pure evil of the master, then the sorrow and regret of the user. In my opinion this song is possibly the most perfectly written metal song.

I’d also like to respectfully add that while understand your comments regarding the dark and negative feel to the song, I think the darkness and brutal ambiance makes it all the more effective in getting the songs message across. Especially in the end when the evil laughter takes over…the master has won again.

The song has a dark meaning behind it but a real meaning. It's about the "master" being drugs and alcohol and it expresses the feeling of addiction. "More is all you need" is addiction and "Laughing..." is the voices in your head off drugs telling you need more and more. "Obey your master" symbolizes the fear people have without their drugs/alcohol. It's not a demonic song. Some people listening to the song will actually listen to the lyrics and it helps them fight their battle of addiction because it makes you realize how tragic they can be. Metallica are legends

The entire song is a metaphor for drug addiction (heroin, iirc) - musically, the first half is needing a fix, the slower interlude is after they get the drug, the heavy build is after the euphoria wears off and the need for another dose kicks in. The lyrics become completely obvious after you understand the musical metaphor. :)

I know it's from a year ago, but this song about being addicted to drugs. The song is the drug and it's singing to the user, which is you. James (the lead singer) has dealt with drug abuse and addiction for most of his career. This song was him trying to put in a song form, just what he felt like while he was addicted.

Drugs, in the first person, speaking directly to an addict. And the musical equivalent of the rush, high, and come down… all starting with an addict dedicated to his own destruction. “Dedicated to how I’m killing you”. It’s a story, a cautionary tale

You aren't supposed to "bob your head" to it you're supposed to head bang to it. Looks way cooler if you have a nice full head of hair down to your shoulder blades like I did as a teen. Really get that hair whip going. Just beware the occasional case of self induced whiplash.

It’s about addiction. They reference drugs but the song is about addiction. Sucking darkest clear references alcoholism. Needlework the way is about heroin and chop your breakfast on a mirror is about cocaine. Most of the song is from the addictions perspective. How it lures you in and once you’re hooked you’ll slowly spiral to a terrible ending. Even the music is showing that. Fast and frenetic like someone needing a fix. The middle section is after you get your fix and you have the calmness of the high. And then the inevitable need for more comes back.

  • @s.a.stewart2743

This is one of the easiest songs to figure out what they are talking about. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror", what do people chop up on a mirror then snort? And when they do it enough they get hooked and the drug becomes their master, and they are living life with both ends of the candle burning.
