As someone born in Chicago, my first introduction to architecture as little kid was being told about the Chicago Water Tower and how it had survived the Great Fire. I looked at this marvelous building that looked like a castle, and then looked around at all the plain glass towers around it that were built "after the fire". And was like, well this sucks. Why is all the new stuff so ugly?
And my lifelong cynicism with modern architecture began lol

@@KB8Killa Yeah it seems a strange worldwide cultural shift and I am not sure if anyone has ever really addressed it.
I've come to believe mankind increasingly looks at what it has done to the world and feels ugly, and so this manifests itself subconsciously in what we build and even our personal appearance.
The ornate castles back then aside (thinking of places like Union Station Chicago and St Louis, the theatres people once went to, and the grand department stores, etc).... look how everyone presented themselves in public at the turn of the century, compared to today.
And its getting worse. These past years I'm seeing more and more people in public with scraggly unkept hair and grungy clothes... even people in professions are looking like this. What does it mean?

WE HAD SCORES MORE , BUT SPECULATORS BOUGHT AND TORE UP MANY JUST WEST, AND NORTH OF THE RIVER . SOME SURVIVED near POST WW1

There's a fire and most of the stuff that was untouched was inhabited by Christians....
Imagine that...
It's almost as if God protected his people in times of fiery horror, extreme suffering, insufferable terrible pain and strife producing death.
God is real.
