The song "Summertime" predates Janis Joplin by quite a bit. George Gershwin composed it around 1933 for his 1935 opera "Porgy and Bess". The song was inspired by, if not based on, the old Ukrainian lullaby "Ой ходить сон, коло вікон"("the dream passes by the window")that Gershwin heard as far back as 1926.
