  • In this short clip from our podcast, Frank and I discuss how touring musicians back in the 90's played old Vox amps, which kept breaking down. This lead to a certain repair shop in the USA to develop their own modified and improved version of these classic amps. Thus, Matchless was born!
Other companies followed suit and brands like Bad Cat, Morgan and many others came onto the scene and offered modern twists on these classic Vox circuits which are still considered some of the best amps ever made.

I found an AC30CC2 at a pawn shop for 500, its a great amp. 2012 British racing green. I put in some vintage blue label fender, an alnico and ceramic, came with greenbacks which i am going to put into a marshall cab. The vox is cool, its not even that loud really, I think it opens up more than gets louder after a certain point

I would love a Vox in that specific colour. It looks really damn cool.

What can be bad about an effects loop? I understand what they are uesd for, but I don't have one on my amp. I have an Ac10 😅 Sorry. I just use a couple pedals through the front.

Some say that adding an FX Loop changes the sound of the amp. I don't know if that is the case or not.

@ToneLoungePodcast I can't understand the reasons, but I hear if you add too many peddles to the front, it starts sapping tone from your rig. I think it's true, but I'm not going to die on that hill.

I’ve played an original 1965 Vox AC10 (2x10 spks) and it’s not the same as the current AC10. It’s got a vaguely similar character- otherwise it’s a totally different amp; as most people know. AC15/AC30 are closer to the originals but still, are very different amps, but with a similar character of sound. I like both tbh. I think it’s best to think of traditional Vox’s until around 1975, and then modern Vox’s from around 1980 onwards.

I agree, Simon! That cut-off period brought about a significant difference in the type of construction that went into making these amps. Notably the handwired vs PCB construction.

a negative feature of early Vox-especially the 30 & 50 models, suffered from poor ventilation and the positioning of the tubes meant it got very hot ..

The AC10 is one of their best selling tube amps. If not the best.. I've have pointed out to people that the closed back design was wrong. They say it's not an issue! I have one and I modified the back and mine has a Greenback. I also changed the grid resistor. As far as gain, you need to balance the gain & master volume... to get good clean & overdriven sounds. It can still be too loud for home playing..depends on your home, It has never broken down
