Would you ever try this?! I found this online and it seems about accurate! "The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage"
My MOST favorite fruit in the whole wide world! However it must not be green or over ripen... that said I watched my sister take down a huge durian single-handedly ... haha.. Great memories!
There are different types of durians, each presenting different taste or textures. But all durians have one thing in common, which is the strong taste and pungent smell. highly recommend trying if you like strong tasting foods
Wow, you guys, that was a great video. sharing a meal has a different feel now, and the monks, that is a whole other level. It was cool when you danced, Hillary, and such a lovely ceremony. The best part was at the end tho, your monologue, 'ask about it', and the Whitman quote, perfection! And stay clear of Durian fruit!
Durians are greatly different from one to another according to their species and stages of ripeness. Some species have very strong smell while others are very mild. Some even smell like flowers. The stage of ripeness even has greater effects on a durian. When it's a bit underripe its hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Its smell is mild too and it tastes a bit sweet and creamy. We call this stage "Krop nok noom nai". A lot of Thai people prefer this stage. If you keep it for 1 or 2 more days its texture will be more consistent. It will be soft on both the outside and the inside and the smell will be a bit stronger but not too strong. It also tastes sweeter and more creamy than an underripe one. This is the perfect ripeness for some people. However, if you keep it for 1 or 2 days longer it will be overripe. At this stage it has pungent smell and turns mushy or pulpy. It also has alcoholic taste and even tastes bitter. But still there are some people who love durians at this stage. I think the one you got was a bit overripe. One big mistake people make when they try durian for the first time is to think of it as a fruit (although it really is a fruit);they should have no expectation at all. When you first eat it, don't compare its smell to anything but enjoy its sweet and creamy taste. This way your brain will accept its smell as food. Too bad you already have bad impression on your first try. I doubt if you will ever love it.
This is why I enjoy your videos - sure, you are fun, curious and adventurous but you also have beautiful hearts which just comes through in your videos - loved Greg's comment about starting the day with a selfless act and Hillary's about being curious, not judgemental. Enjoy your journey and keep sharing it with us♥️
Thanks for making me laugh so so hard watching you try durian fruit. I absolutely love the stuff. I also love drinking durian bubble tea. May you taste something amazingly good soon! 😂🙏
Oh gosh, i wrote the first comment before watching the whole thing. Gregs discomfort with the crossed legs was also hilarious! I can SO RELATE! I could never sit like that for more than 5 minutes i think,. I never could even as a kid. Super video you guys.
I’m Thai. That durian you tried was way too ripe. Majority of Thais won’t eat it. The proper one must have tight skin, not too soft, not to stinky. And the best time to harvest high grade durian should be in summer. This quite a bit late because when durian tree, while it is having fruits, exposed to the rain. The quality of the fruits will drop a lot.
Beautiful message at the beginning and end of the video. Thanks for sharing that. Durian... It was everywhere in Malaysia. I couldn't get past the smell to try it and I consider myself pretty adventurous with food. There is a place down the street from me here in Chiang Mai that sells mango sticky rice, which I love. They also have durian sticky rice. I think that may be the ticket for trying durian for the first time. 😎
I was in Singapore, and my friends there wanted me to try Durian, because I told them that I like every kind of food, there's nothing I don't like. Well, I tried Durian and I really liked it. They didn't believe me, so they told me to eat more, I ate the entire package they had of fresh Durian. Now that smell, it reminds me of a gas leak, the smell of rotten eggs mixed with dirty, stinky gym clothes. LOL
Start your day with a selfless act, amazing. The whole durian thing was funny, but I felt so bad for you both. Good for you for trying it, don't think I could. I loved the dinner performances. Good for Hillary to take part. Hillary, your final words were gold - Anne
OMG you guys! I have not laughed so hard for quite a while. When Greg first tried it, that was hilarious. Sorry Greg. And then Hilary. Too much. You guys are brave and that was fun. The rest of the video was good too. Glad you are enjoying your travels.
At my next session, I'm going to ask my psychologist why I profoundly enjoyed watching Greg and Hillary eat something that nearly made them puke. Hopefully, I will achieve enlightenment with some counseling and antipsychotic medication.
You were brave to try the durian. Jetlag Warriors, a TH-cam travel couple from Canada, actually love it! Greg, I totally felt your pain at having to sit on the floor! I’m 5’10’, and there’s no way I could have sat on the floor for even five minutes! Great job getting up there and dancing, Hilary! Really enjoying your travels and adventures around the world. Keep up your fantastic work! ❤️
Be curious, not judgemental....but not with durian fruit 😂😂😂 Love that you partook in learning Thai culture, from offering foods to a monk, tried strange fruit, had traditional Northern Thai meal and participated in Thai dance. What a jouney ❤️ Have fun in Thailand.
This was a wonderful video Kennons! My favourite part was Greg’s offering to the Monk and the prayer. I have to say however that you made a big mistake with the Durian. You chose UNRIPE Durian and I can tell by the pale yellowish colour. Unripe Durian tastes completely different than ripe Durian and yes, unripe Durian eaten raw and uncooked tastes bad. Usually it is used for cooking in many countries mostly in curries, stews and stir fries. Seasoning, spices and flavourings are added. Ripe Durian fruit on the other hand is more bright yellow orange, juicy sweet and tastes like vanilla custard. It usually does not smell so bad because the sugar smell is stronger. please try to find the ripe fruit and try it!
Ha ha ha ha .. you guys were braved that try to eat durian !,as a Thai person durian is ok for me, is not my favorite fruit. I like lychee, and rambutan very much its so sweet , juicy and fresh. Very nice of you to gave food to the monk, you tried to learn our tradition.I hope your guys enjoy and having fun in Thailand.
Haha i only tried it once + never smelled sewage, but definitely rotten onion smell 😂 I didn’t love the taste but it did taste better than it smelled Great video, thks for sharing
Good on you for trying it even after that smell, it is pretty bad/doesn't smell edible! Had a durian flavoured ice cream sandwich a friend from Indonesia gave me and it was tolerable... Tried the fruit a few years later and definitely not for me either.
I can tell that it was too overripe. You guys should buy Mon Thong durians at TOPS supermarket, their durians are from reliable farms and choose durians that's hard on the outside and soft inside.
I have felt for a long time, if we could take kids from the ghetto on worldwide trips, they would become better citizens in their communities and the country. Amen! 😂
Hilarious, I LOVE durian. Delicious. But if you eat too much you start to smell. If you eat it cold it’s like the most delicious ice cream ever. Maybe you got a bad one?
I noticed that you bought overripe durian. I'm not surprised why you want to puke because the texture is too crumby, I usually eat harder textures than what you eat.
apart from durian variety, the ripeness level of durian will greatly affect its taste, smell, and texture. it's safer for 1st time eater not to try very ripe durian. also, only for the monthong variety (the one you had), after cutting from the tree, most vendors in thailand will use a plant hormone to control the day of ripeness. it's safe to eat but it's not as good as the one not using it. you can tell this by looking at the stem. they will cut it short right at the bumpy part in the middle of the stem. please look at Mickey Stoch ytb channel-- extreme thai food tour on a motorbike clip at 25m. i'm sure you will like durian if you had tried the same.
Most but not all Thail perple love Durian. It is expesive and exported to China and South East Asia. The one you guys ate is too riped. Sitting on floor is quit common in Thailand family. When you do meditation we sit still for hours.
It's ok, guys, that Durian is not for you. It took me 15 years to get pass the smell of Blue cheese without gagging. By the time I got used to it, the stores in AR hardly sell it anymore. 😂
encountered durian fruit on our first trip to Vietnam and I understand why even Anthony Bourdain wouldn't eat it. the smell is the worst thing I've ever smelled! I wouldn't eat it for anything in the world! ATB Sam Adler from Vietnam
There are different kinds of durian. My favorite is monthong durian. I like when it not too ripe. I think when it too ripen, it smell so bad and the texture is too soft. I couldn’t eat it either.
Nice you trying something new but do not disrespect/question what is enjoyable to someone or other cultures. If it is not your thing, it is not. You could have put your spit/bite in the plastic bag besides you & disposed of it properly rather than what you both did on their street/market/area where you were resting/sitting.
Hi, you're brave to try durian. It is an acquired taste. I'm quite addicted to it by now hahaha. But next time you try something you don't like, try not to spit it out on the sidewalk. You were sitting right next to a garbage bin... Another thing that made me uncomfortable was the scene where you squeeze out your sweat in a temple (another video), where people go to pay respect. It would be nice to give your sweated out juices back to the plants, not have people walk through them. Thanks and enjoy your travels!
I respect all the preference of people . But Durian is an very expensive fruit in Thailand and Malaysia Durians were exported to China that the huge demand in China is not full for Durians.
Andrew Zimern, who had a show where he traveled the world eating the most disgusting foods including insects and I think even snake blood, tried to eat durian and he ended up making this horrible face and slapping the top of his bald head over and over again.
The closest I’ve come to eating durian was a tiny hard candy which I spit out within seconds, then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get the taste out of my mouth. Hard pass. (And I’m normally a very open-minded, curious and adventurous eater.)
I’m surprised nobody freaked out at you for spitting your food out on the sidewalk like that? I guess Thailand is more flexible. At least now you know you don’t like it but I think yours was overripe too
Durian has to be eaten fresh (cut the fruit in front of you). The one you tried was old and too ripe. that's too bad, you would have liked it if eaten fresh.
Why do you adopt other culturally religious ceremony? Do you even know the meaning of what you’re practicing? And if you do not know the meaning, doesn’t take away from the religious experience, depth, and meaning?

So true! I immediately thought it was underripe but you are correct… overripe also can have an unpleasant taste!
oh wow--thank you SO much for this insight and explanation!

Singapore durians are imported from malaysia. And we never ever pluck it unripe.

I love durian...its native fruit in malaysia too...durian means thorny fruit...but not all people will like durian...some may find it tasty

Solid effort on the fruit guys.
haha--we can at least say we tried!
Durian is most our best fruit but you have to select ones that not too soft, a little bit harder on skin is better that less smell and good taste.
oops---I think ours may have been too ripe!
For Thai people, offering food to monks can be passed on to a deceased relative. He will have meal in the afterlife.
My question is when buying it did you see others buying 😂😂😂
haha no not really---but then again it was also about 7 AM so maybe that's why?!
