Cassette tapes came along at the right time in my life. When I went in the Navy, I bought my parents a simple tape recorder (General Elect.) to send me tapes rather than letters. I knew my dad would not write letters, and letters from mom would not go into any detail of what was happening with dad and his projects in the shop. Dad kept the recorder by his easy chair and would add to it a little over a week and then send it off. I would find a spot on the ship or if we were in port, go out with my boombox and make a tape for them. Also, mom had written some songs and she used it to record her piano playing. Years later she bought a MIDI organ and we recorded her songs into a computer. My dads brother also bought a recorder and dad would send tapes to him. If I was in the Navy today and could send emails, I doubt my dad would have bothered with learning to use a computer. So tapes came along just in time.
But while well recorded cassettes have at least tolerable quality, even quite good with the best equipment, VHS is unsufferable. Using a VCR makes sense only for one-off recordings, and for playing discontinued titles. Watching something on VHS which is available in other formats is plain absurd.
There is something strangely mesmerizing about this video. I love cassettes... probably not as much as vinyl but I grew up with cassettes just as much as records. My parents had a Sharp VZ-3000 which was a beautiful piece of equipment back in the day. It wasn't even particularly high end, it just looked awesome. Anyway, I used to spend hours playing around with cassettes on it, adjusting the knobs, pushing the buttons, watching the red LED VU meters bounce up and down. Great times.
I love audio compact cassette tapes. All the different types, styles, colours, brands etc... I've been using and collecting tapes since I was a kid and I've never stopped using them like most people did, switching to CD'S etc... Tapes are awesome, they last a very long time, they are compact, they look cool, they sound amazing.
Some other good ones to add to the collection: Memorex dBS and clear MRX I and II, 3M Black Watch, Denon HD6/HD8, Scotch BX. Growing up, I had a dBS 60 in my Fisher-Price tape recorder for years, until I learned to use the grown-ups' tape deck. (I was 5 at the time.) Ah memories.
My favourite designs are those from the early-mid 80s with black matte plastic and big transparent windows in various shapes, sometimes covering most of the cassette. Late 80s and 90s they mosaty moved to fully transparent. It was usually seen on chromes and just screamed quality. Thas's some strong industrial design, you could guess the quality of the product just by its design. Also the cases - I remember that TDK-SA special edition case which was a clamshell in the shape of cassette.
I love those Maxell UR-F90's that green hub cassette. The ones I own are all blue. I wish I could find different versions of colours of Maxell UR-F's. I've seen them on eBay once, but they were too expensive. So far blue versions is all I got and all of my favorite beautiful music is recorded on them.
Maxell still manufactures and sells blank tapes today I just purchased some few days ago at the mall. There were other brands as well by ion, but those ion brand tapes weren't as good as Maxell. To me, they seem to be the type 0, designed for dictation and voice recorders, where as Maxell still makes good quality tapes for recording music. I tried finding Sony or TDK's but couldn't find them anywhere, except online. I wish Sony would start making blanks again, their tapes were the best quality tapes like CD-IT, HF-S, UXS etc. The last Sony and TDK tapes I bought, looked pretty much identical to the Maxell tapes. It looks like Maxell manufactures tapes for Sony and TDK as well these days.
Yes they are. The very first blue UR-F I bought, I paid $80 just for one tape because everyone kept bidding for it. Then I got lucky and I bought a pack of ten, also blue, for $12. I thought they only came in blue at the time, till I've seen other colours later on, on eBay. But they wanted $400 just for 5 of them, all of different colours, including pink one, and someone else ended up purchasing them by the time I made my decision. They sell fast, no matter how much the seller wants for them. Even if he wanted $1,000 for them, people will still buy them quick.
The Beauty of the cassette tape lies in its inherent flaws. Because they are imperfect, cassettes can have a unique charm and a warm, lo-fi sound that many people find appealing. In addition, they are accessible, affordable, and easily transportable, making them ideal for sharing and listening on the go.
Auto Reverse was a brilliant idea for cassettes. But like someone said the physical tangible product has been lost. It was something you displayed like a trophy.
The beauty of the cassette tape in action. Thank you! I just love to watch it spinning and moving while playing the songs from the beginning to the end on each side. I miss my teenage days. Do anyone know how to use the video as the visualization in the Media Player Classic, VLC or Daum PotPlayer instead of the album art or default ones while we play any audio / song?
What tapes win hands down on the normal 3 classes Ferric, Chrome and Metal and what tapes win for each of the 4 hybrid classics of FerroChrome and the Cobalt remixes for the other 3 classes?
I always wanted the ones with big hubs but could never find any. Instead found Korean versions which only came in light green and light blue colours. Which were also quite spendy.
good video. amazing technology on cassettes: super fine uniaxial, acoustic response cassette, super precision rigid cassette mechanism, antivibration mechanism, chrome super class, suono format, dual metal particle coating, extra wide dynamic range, top precision, super chrome class, super ferro, super precision anti resonance. wow.
Maybe we should all join forces, and convince them to start manufacturing all the good, high quality type II and type IV (chrome & metal) tapes again. You'll be surprised how many people are going back to using cassettes again these days. But we need high quality studio tapes, not the type I's they sell today. Maxell UR's are still pretty decent, but I really miss and would rather use my deck to record unto type II or type IV tapes. They just sound brilliant compared to type I's. Guess I'll just be shopping around online till someone gets the big picture, and starts manufacturing high end tapes. I mean there are allot of people that are wishing and waiting for them to start making higher class tapes again. Vinyl Records made a comeback, I don't see why same thing can happen to tapes.
It’s a long shot then you’d need high end cassette decks. The whole industry just dwindled by the late 90s with gear getting cheap and nasty. Then came the minidisc which I really love too!
Funnily enough that track was made using a Roland 808 simulator on an old Mac G3 ten years ago! My brother in law in Arizona has these huge Klipsch blonde wooden speakers that sound amazing! When I go there I usually crank 'em way up!
Klipsch has been around for a longtime and their engineering in speakers is awesome. I just got into them starting with their subs woofers. I have 2 of them. Klipsch sw10 and Klipsch 12 that i use for my home theater system, My home home theater system consist of a Yamaha RX-V671,Panasonic digital tuner with VHS recorder,DVD recorder,Play station 4 and a Sylvania blue ray player. Connected to Polk Speakers and a Klpisch 12 sub. My 2 channel stereo is now updated with a Onkyo TX-8050 net receiver that is connected with vintage audio components. Sony mini disc{MDS-JE-520},Sony Dat {A6},Sony usb turntable,Centrex 8 track recorder(1975),Phillips CDR 785. All components connected to 2 realistic tape control centers that are via connected to my Audio Source 10 band eq (2004). The whole system is connected to a vintage Pioneer audio digital timer DT-555. System is connected to JBL ES series speakers and Klipsch PSW 10 and JBL 150P. I switch between the klipsch and the JBL at times.
As a matter of fact, they are not even made by Maxell, even though they look very similar. They are made by some unknown Korean factory. But they still look awesome. As a matter of fact, they even sound amazing. Did some test recording, sounds even better than CD.
The Chrome/Cobalt Hybrid was in action at the start guess you do have some of the hybrids already. That Chrome hybrid at the start really sounded great as well and the pure metal after it too.
Oh right it wasn't the real outputs from the tapes of a part of the same tune being recorded to each of them and edited together but instead a background music to the tapes moving in the picture silly me.
Nice idea. The type and model was usually written on them. There was a lot of designs but the main types a brand offered were always there but changed with new design and wrapping every year or two. I have other videos from last year which show most common Sony, TDK and Maxell on detail. Thanks for watching.
I remember the CrO2 tapes and the TDK SA 90s. The S.A. 90s always sounded as good as the Chrome Oxide tapes that cost three times more. Gosh I miss those days.
I just a JVC DOUBLE CASSETTE DECK in mint condition. The seller said it has low mileage. Got it for $35 only. I was testing it a while ago but have to stop because the Barber shop is calling me. Will demagnetized the tape head first when get home .
Well, that's a very broad question simply because most of the decks on the market are used and I presume you mean used? Okay, you will need to audition a deck, don't just buy one from eBay at random. Why I say audition. It's not just for the sound quality but to detect potential pitch fluctuations that an old deck may have. Checking for wear on the heads, a well used deck may have worn heads and these can damage your cassettes, and good cassettes are now pretty expensive so you need the machine to be kind to them! Check it records properly without distortion, that the display illuminates correctly. There's a lot if factors to consider in reality. I don't know where you live but if possible try find a dealer that sells used hifi and they will be very helpful. Don't buy online except from a shop or dealer that knows what their stuff. Again, for starting out any Sony, Pioneer, Denon, Technics, etc that you can pick up for €50 or so may work wonders. I'd advise not shelling out €300 on a used deck at the start until you know what you want as you maybe disappointed. Remember 3 head machines offer the highest quality but a good 2 head can sometimes be better than a bad three head! I hope this helps you in some way! Regards!

Hi! How are you? I´m working on a venezuelan´s musician of the 80´s documentary film and I´m looking for cassettes shots and think this is great. Can I use it?
So many of the cheap cassette players now don't even allow you to see the tape wheels going around. Not ever a small window to let you know that tape is moving. Also, the most annoying thing is that you can't get a tape machine with a microphone input. I guess you are forced to buy a FM mic, and then broadcast to a tape machine on one of the FM channels that is open. Cassettes were and still are the easiest way to see how you are progressing when learning an instrument or giving a speech. You can make a CD of your speech or playing the piano, but you need to do it next to the computer. With a cassette tape portable machine, you can do it outside on the porch, and you don't need to carry a $200 laptop with you.

I'm glad someone else appreciates the beauty of cassette. Great video.
Thanks.

its older than i am lol i was born 1970
Wonderful story, I'd like that the cassettes and vinyl, both to come back once and for all.
I love the 'physicality' of things like audio cassettes and VHS. I love being able to see whats happening and where your music is coming from.
Same here! CDs and DVDs are boring.
But while well recorded cassettes have at least tolerable quality, even quite good with the best equipment, VHS is unsufferable. Using a VCR makes sense only for one-off recordings, and for playing discontinued titles. Watching something on VHS which is available in other formats is plain absurd.

Most people are stupid! Well done!
A fabulous idea for video of cassettes, thank you ;)
Got quite a lot of these makes/types/variations. I love audio tape :)
Awesome, thanks for sharing.
I used to love staring at the reels going around especially on 1986 TDK D90's at 3:50.
....while you were ripping bong hits.
As a 5 year old, oh yes! .... Loved Bob Marley for sure when I was a kid.

Прикольная подборочка. С меня лайк. Многие из показанных вариантов тоже имею в наличии.

There’s a few yellow on eBay at the moment and a green. Sealed and around €10 to €20. Also nice Japan market 46 with big hubs!
Came for the tapes, stayed for the beats

I find with eBay now, the postage costs supersede the item! Cassette €5, shipping €30😃

Where did you bought those silver TEAC open reels?
Bought them 20 years ago. Totally overrated and now very expensive on eBay. They look great though!
KRAZEEIZATION Yeah, too bad that they costs so much...
Looked great, but it was not a good quailty cassette tape.
