- It’s been over two decades since the blockbuster “Titanic” was on the big screen, but the film remains one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most iconic roles. In this week’s “The Vault” podcast, the actor told Access Hollywood in a 1997 interview for “Titanic” why he was hesitant at first to play the role of Jack Dawson opposite Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater. He seems so natural and so down to earth. No wonder why he portrayed Jack so well.
Over all the people who auditioned to play Jack they picked perfectly when they went with Leo. I couldn't see any of those actors that were either offered or sought auditions. I watched a couple auditions and they gave off completely different versions of Jack's character. This movie needed Leo's brightness. I like the way he describes his character in this video. He was just so purely perfect. Its why it hurts so bad at the end.
He should have won an Oscar for this movie. This movie is still one of the top best movies ever made. It deserved everything.

he nailed playing jack. him saying about how jack had no demons and it was difficult to play him as normally leo’s roles are filled with emotional backstory, i truly got that sense from his character. to me jack was like that one piece of hope in roses life that appeared for a short duration of time and helped her find happiness, but he was then taken away once she found that happiness. jack was a truly good-hearted person with no bad quality about him and leo played that exceptionally considering about what i just wrote above. it's almost as if he was an angel sent from above lmao
yes! I remember the first time I watched it, and this whole thing was niggling at me. This feeling that Jack wasn't a real person, but almost an hallucination. The movie acts like he's real and gives you no practical or logical indication otherwise, especially in the beggining. But at the end, when he's trapped down in that room and the water floods in, he seems unaffected by the sinking and keeps joking, "the waters freezing!" and later, "you wanna walk a little quicker through that valley of death there", and even though he's practically focused on escaping the sinking ship and getting out of the water, there's this subtle feeling that he's just trying to save Rose. He doesn't behave in the expected manner of a person escaping a trapped ship, he never expresses worry, fear, panick or a desire to live in the way everyone else, and especially Rose, does. He acts like he's an angel on a mission, and once Rose is on the board somehow it's like he knew that this was the place he was trying to get to the whole time, and that he was never going to make it out alive, and all of the saving was just for her, not for him.

She said in the movie, "he saved me in every way that a person can be saved." Love that line.
For him to say that playing jack was difficult he sure played that roll so natural

True... you can see posters of him everywhere. But at that point he kind of took a long rest before making another film. When he came back he had pool of masterpiece film that Oscars ignored him again and again. His role in Aviator was superb as well. I cant remember one bad movie of Leo starting from Whats Eating Gilbert Grape.

My very first movie star crush. The first thing I ever saw Leo in as a child was actually the movie that he did with. Mark Wahlberg called the basketball diaries where he portrays a teenaged heroin addict Who tries to get his life together. I believe that picture is based on a true story as well. I remember seeing this for the first time in the movie theater with my sister and my mom and dad. And I remember just bawling my eyes out. When he dies in the Titanic. I was so upset by it that my mom actually let me stay home from school that following monday. I just can't believe that he is now in his 50s! And i Haven't really seen him in much of anything lately.

I love Kate & Leo chemistry in the movie. Also their friendship reminds me of Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry's friendship who play Brenda and Dylan on Beverly Hills 90210. They had so much great chemistry that people assume they dated for real but they're just close friends.

What he said about playing a guy with no demons a pure guy was surprised hard rings true. The actress who plays Callisto in Xena said she had a hard time playing an angel because the angel character was so pure she did not know how to play it.
Leonardo is so completely captivating whether it is as a cute teenager or a very sophisticated man. I cannot wait to see him in his next undertaking. HE IS BRILLIANT. Maybe as a KING in a historical drama, going from bad to a redeeming good, or as a President fighting socialism and communism. He is an enormously talented actor, seems like a great person.
Still, my absolute favorite film that showed his tremendous range of talent is The Basketball Diaries! That one put him on several movie maker radars!
