  • Are you in a creative slump? Feel busy all the time but aren’t getting much done? All of the amazing technology that helps us work and connect, is also the very thing that's killing our creative mojo. We are the most distracted generation ever.
Despite that, it's the greatest time to be alive as creative human beings.
Hello, I’m Matthew Encina. I recently attended Adobe’s 99U Conference, and in this video, I'm going to share my thoughts on the future of creativity following the conference. I'm going to highlight our biggest challenges moving forward, and share some NEW tools I've picked up, so you can supercharge your creative brain, and take control of your future.
0:29 - Who is Matthew Encina? What is the future of creativity?

2:25 - Brian Collins. Artificial Intelligence in Design
3:00 - We have to bring our human touch to everything we do

4:06 - Duncan Wardle workshop. Former Head of Innovation and Creativity at Disney.
    4:42 - We've become risk-averse instead of risk-takers
5:03 -Challenge 3: We're distracted all the time
5:29 - Dr. Sahar Yousef. Cognitive neuroscientist studying productivity.
    5:45 - Why we aren't productive anymore

    Focus Sprint
    - Goal
    - Subtasks
    - 90 min concentrated work
    - rest 20 min
    - break the day/ perform as many focus sprints as you can
    Better Brainstorms
    - Bad: the idea still unclear to the team
    - Stablish a challenge to tackle
    - 4 people small group
    - use naive experts
    - hot potato with the idea
    - don't shoot anything down: YES AND... expand and grow rather than shrink the idea
    - "t-sheet": explanation and sketch; better representation of an idea
    Beautiful Boredom
    - turn of stimuli
    - take notes
    - be present; be bored; create space to the mind; let it wander
"STEP AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS AND BE INTENTIONAL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS"

Looking forward to implementing these techniques Matt 😉
    To summarise
    THE FUTURE OF CREATIVITY
This is the greatest time to be alive as a creative but how do we take advantage of the tools at out disposal?
    BIG CHALLENGES
    Whats Holding us back?
    CHALLENGE 1
    The Robots are coming
The role of designers will change dramatically in the near future…
The types of skills we need to bring to the table will need to be very different
We must dream up a future that is BOLD, RIDICULOUS and UNEXPECTED
Bring a human touch to everything we do
As creative human beings our greatest strengths are that we can dream up things that don’t exist yet
We must break away from convention and push ourselves to stretch and flex our creative imagination
    CHALLENGE 2
We should be innovating not iterating
How do we prepare for disruption?
    We have to THINK BIG
We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable
We have to become expansive thinkers and practice growing our imagination
    CHALLENGE 3
    Were distracted all the……time
We get distracted every 90 seconds
We only get 3.5 hours of productive time out of an 8 hour work day
    Multitasking is a myth
    TOOL 1
    Focus Sprints
Our brain is our most powerful asset
90 Minute focus sprint of uninterrupted, distraction free, concentrated work to achieve sustainable peak performance
    STEP 1
Turn off ALL distractions (hide you phone)
    STEP 2
Assign a goal - Be realistic- break down the goal into sub tasks
STEP 3 Set a timer and go
STEP 4 Rest for 20 minutes, go for a walk
STEP 5 REPEAT for as many reps as you can
Start with 1 and build up from there
    TOOL 2
    Better Brainstorms for expansive thinking
    STEP 1
    Run a BRAINSTORM session
Set a well defined challenge to tackle
    Be specific
    STEP 2
Break up into 4 person groups
1 person records and facilitates, try to include a “NAIVE EXPERT” from another department
STEP 3 Play hot potato with the idea “YES AND…”
STEP 4 Document the idea in a T sheet
    TOOL 3
    Beautiful boredom
Allow the brain time and space to be creative
    STEP 1
Get rid of digital distractions and just be
    STEP 2
Write ideas down on paper and pen

After participating in and often leading brainstorming sessions, I found they do not work. Everyone has a vision in mind of how they should work but in my experience, I rarely saw it happen. So I had this idea that I'd like to share with y'all:
Hold a pre-meeting a few days before the brainstorming session. Unload as much information on the participants as you can then send everyone away. Let everyone know that to be admitted to the brainstorming, you must have at least three (or pick any number) ideas. Collect all the ideas before the session starts and make them visible on an oversized pad, whiteboard, or whatever.
When the team comes in, they see all the concepts, good and bad. Rather than starting cold, their brains are already warmed up and ready. I found this running start gets brainstorming revved up into top gear immediately and produces huge results.

This validates me after many years of people telling me that my 1.5/2hrs then a short break was wrong! Getting to know the way my creativity is charged and spent allows me to do the work in 1hr that others need much longer. I take it further to warm up with a process that fulfills my need for information and allows me to engage completely.

@@MatthewEncina I've realized from observing my kids that creativity and imagination can be lost so easily. Thankfully I was stubborn and refused to let go! My mind wanders til it runs. I never truly feel bored. When I'm physically still, I'm doing mental gymnastics. It's nice to know I'm not that weird after all.

So, something's that resonated well with me is:
    - Focus Sprint: The 90 min and 20 min break reminded me of Pomodoro Technique to improve efficiency and make best use of your time. For those who are interested, there's an app named 'Tide' that helps you do this seamlessly.
And the second part of Focus Sprint was related to what is called as being in a "Flow State of Mind". No matter how and when it happens, the productivity is off the roof when you're in the "Zone" or "Flow State'

I've been infusing focus sprints in my day for work and personal development. At work my productivity skyrocketed. i could finish my daily tasks in one sprint. the rest of the day is just for revisions for all of the tasks, if there are revisions. My manager also noticed increase in my creativity. For my after hours i focus on developing my illustration skills mainly portrait paintings. i've applied "sketchsprints" into my routine, even though i only have the evening for that. i've been forming good habits in drawing and I can see the development in my craft. Thank you very much for sharing this Matthew! I've been feeling a lot better the past two weeks and it feels like im burnout free. I think it's because i know that im spending my time in the things that i'd love to improve and it feels more rewarding than anything. With this im positively looking forward to the future. Cheers!

I loved the video and would like to add some resources to it: The techniques to fight the distraction and boredom are well known by people with ADHD. The focus sprint is a pairing of the 'pomodoro technique ' (YT: 'How to ADHD' - Time management) and the 'salami technique' (techniques to break big tasks into the smallest goals - "get up" and "wash face" are small goals for me that I have to break down, even further on bad days [as in, 'go to this room' 'take this' 'do this with it']. ).
So if you would like to know more techniques you can apply to trick your brain into focusing, getting less distracted and get more things done: I HIGHLY recommend researching the methods us people with constant distraction and constant boredom are using. I know all you creative people out there can benefit from these.

Hey Matthew, love your content. Watched a few of your videos on your personal channel too (day in the life, DIY Home Office,...) and am just captured by your style.
About this video: What’s your exact setup to shoot the close up of you talking to the camera?
    - Canon 80D
    - Sigma 50mm?
    - Mic?
    - How do you light yourself?

Best talk about creativity and productivity, so easy to follow and to understand everything he says.Recently I participated in a workshop about Design Thinking and that was the moment when I realize that a very specified challenge its easier to solve and achieve than an unclear one. We use the "Yes, and" to continue the flow of ideas. A great solution to define ideas is to ask "Why?" until you find the core of the problem or challenge.

When you spoke about distractions, was the music meant to be distracting?
    If so, nice touch.

Only after reading the comments could realize that this damn video was 17 mins long 🤯. This is an excellent video not just for motivation, it completely adds a new dimension to your thinking. What ever he just mentioned I strongly feel this applies to all sectors of work and not just creative and design world.
    Thank you so much! ♥️

Again, putting out the goods! This creative process of thinking is great , out of the box & I love the whole looking back to childhood idea, the years where no tech existed & we were all using our imaginations ALL the time! So true that our best ideas come to us when performing the most mundane of tasks, my cafe re-brand idea for the brands texture came to me when staring at our bench top when I was making a cuppa tea! - went back to create it digitally & it worked so well. Thanks again for sharing, I need this right now! Currently brainstorming for a funeral director business , & although their briefing & consult was jam packed with great info & a vision I am just having a moment ugh... I feel like I have TOO much information & my mind is running 1000 miles an hour trying to process the direction I want to take for them.... ! anyway , must get back to it , its 1am & by 2.30am I should have a good idea to run with ... night time is my solace & where all the initial ideas are birthed! x Loz from Aus

I spoke at 99U on the power of Doodling for Communication. I also attended Duncan Wardle's session, which I'd participated in before and also documented as a graphic facilitator. I missed some of the other talks you mentioned soI'm looking forward to catching the videos, but thanks for the recap!!!

I've found myself increasingly distracted with even the easiest of tasks lately. A few years ago I used to get lost in this tunnel of creative drive. I'm not sure what happened to it, but I'm going to give these methods a try.
Also, Matthew got me audibly saying 'Damn' when I checked a notification right as he said 'you've probably been distracted once during this video'.

Yes , I genuinely understand the necessity of being bored which is best part I got out of this video . tq

  • @devtank

The thing about ideas say, in the shower, is not because you are bored, its because you are engaged in something opposite to what you are thinking. This is how Art Therapy works, you draw, paint or otherwise create while being asked a question or stimulated in some oppositional way. The conduits (synaptic's) are unimpeded by complexity, the act of doing something while discussing something else is opens up otherwise controlled or impinged by discomfort or expectation etc,.
