Perhaps if the NHS was funded with all the money they are spending on looking after illegal immigrants then your grandmother would have had better care. The problem that needs fixing is the NHS. The answer is not killing people for the sake of freeing up bed space. And how many old people will take the death option just because they don't want to burden their children? It's sick! There's no dignity in it at all.
Well done. It's a first step on a long road. Forty five years ago I watched my mother die an utterly miserable death. Unable to see, unable to walk, unable to eat, incontinent, in agony from untreatable bed sores, she lingered in this pitiful state for a fortnight. Each time she would open her eyes and tears would come as she said repeatedly "I'm not still alive please, I'm not still alive, please no". This from a woman who had served with distinction in the WRENS throughout WWII and after. All these years later (privately) the effect is still with me.
End of life care does not need to be like that these days. I have attended a number of friends in hospices before their passing and I have seen how they were able to have loved ones and friends around them and communicate with them only hours before their deaths deaths. The answer is good palliative care, not ‘bumping people off’! All the safeguards in the world will not stop this escalating to killing people out of convenience or monetary gain. We know what happened over the regulation of the Abortion Law, it became meaningless, and abortion today is just a form of contraception. We kill hundreds of thousands of babies every year in the UK. Is it going to be the same with sick people?
Thank you, Peter. Yes you are quite right but the hospice system, especially in Scotland, is almost non- existent. Also, palliative care doesn't always work to relieve suffering, many people are resistant to pain relief drugs. I certainly don't want to gamble that I or a loved one will be one of them. It should always be the individual who decides how they die and no one else. Choice and Dignity.
For the first time in a long time, politicians have made the right decision. Safeguards need to be water tight as there are valid concerns, but i think this decision was inevitable. Right to life, right to death in my opinion.
Great news, finally some decent legislation. Now we need to discuss people who are unable to physically self-administer and those who may not be terminally ill, but through illness, live with unending pain. Consider someone with near total paralysis, they may be able to live a very long time. Should they not have the choice to end their suffering?
My beautiful (Philip) passed away in 2021 and the way he was made to suffer before he died was disgusting and truly wrong. Over a period of 3 months whilst he lived in his bungalow feeling extremly poorly with heart failure and a cronic lung condidion without Pallitive care and no nurse making a visit to see him was truly out of order. His final month before he died was spent in a N.H.S hospital and not in a hospice were he should have been. There are some good doctors and nurses however there are some uncaring ones as well in the way ( Philip) was bad treated. if ( Philip) had wanted me to end his life to take away the pain he was in i would have done so without no word of a lie. My true life story in regards (Philip) has my full support for Assited dying because no person should suffer in the way he did. and no close family or friend should see them suffer as well.😮

We put down a pet if they are suffering, but grandma has to live in pain or high on morphine for as long as possible because humans aren’t allowed to have death with dignity? Oh right, the hospital and doctors need to make as much money as possible! Money over people in health care has to STOP.
The UK the nation that had the biggest empire in recorded history and most of that existed still 80 years ago. Our empire doesn't exist today but what millions of people have from around the world living here and billions across the world have what they have today because of it .
That argument is a bit on its head. One of the major concerns about this bill was that hospitals and doctors might be suspected of trying to SAVE money by bumping off patients who would otherwise cost a lot in palliative care. I do believe assisted dying should be legal, but hope the finished Act will have strong safeguards around that aspect. Anyway, the bill will now be supported to become law in due course, so you're about half an hour late to complain that it isn't.

@Louis-o3j What an absoloute moronic comment. My grandfather in his last moments of life when his liver burst was in so much pain he could not speak. They pumped him with so much painkillers that it was seeping out of his skin yet it did nothing to ease his pain. He eventually passed away but in his final days, what he went through not only traumatized my family but the nurses and doctors too who could do nothing to end his suffering.
I still got my grandmother living to this day and age, just have medicine to essentially relieve their pain, but people got to pass away at some point when the time comes

Folks would be protesting on the streets in their millions if their beloved pets were denied the right to end their suffering, so it's crazy that it's taken this long for even the smallest movement in that direction for people and their families who are constantly suffering and have no legal way for them to die with dignity.

Having watched many people suffering needlessly painful dragged out endings to their lives I welcome this vote. It is a myth that peoples pain and distress is alleviated at the ends of their lives by modern medications. It simply is not true.
But if God is good then why does he force us to go to such a place at all? Your God does not love you and if he did then he wouldn't threaten you with eternal suffering.
A university professor of mine in Canada, but who was actually an American citizen, chose to pass by assisted dying. In favour of Assisted Dying I wish to say that this is a voluntary death, where ugly torments are the only alternative. Against Assisted Dying I would like to say that the medical services can create such an unsavoury and degrading environment so as to make a patient choose suicide rather than to face a natural death (if it is indeed a natural death), facing violating attitudes, treatments and filming. I would like to underline that cameras being present at any stage of care, diagnosis and treatment, should be treated as an acute human rights violation. Where is WHO, where is WHO ? My guess is that WHO is being blacked out. Does WHO address the needs of white people ? If it doesn't, WHO needs to be banned.
Lucky if your comments get published. One last try. People are inherently corruptable, criminal, and devious. Do we really trust any Government, medical body or person to this degree. Could a national threat or economic circumstances start to dictate what is a desirable and what becomes a necessity. Or more clearly, do you trust your life in their hands. For example you could become too expensive to treat.
@@MrMKiani You could simply say to your doctor, “No, doc. I don’t want MAID, thanks.” And they have to respect that or they’ll be in a lot of trouble. As for the financial part. It is an utter fallacy that everyone who has terminal illness dies in uncontrollable pain. Pain is well managed within the NHS, and for those receiving palliative care at end-of-life, morphine and other pain-relieving medications are freely given. Ask any honest palliative care medic.
The slippery slope. First to go will be “consent” “under certain conditions”. Next the process will be “simplified”. Then it will be “only if objection is raised. Reminds me of Germany and the policy they had in the 1930s. It’s madness to give the government control over life. Starmer has already declared war on Russia on our behalf. There is not a lot of difference.
The right to assisted suicide will become a duty in the blink of an eye. This is a monumental step backwards for the Country and a step forward for the unscrupulous. Of course, there are those who will herald the number of safeguards. Well, look what happened in 1967.
@ Uh-huh and some sooner than expected. Just look what this led to in Canada. For example, the limits being proposed will be challenged in court as being discriminatory and they will then be removed by virtue of being illegal. Then we will be slip sliding away…

In Canada, there is a more extensive process than just being offered MAID by one doctor. *BUT* there have been rare troubling MAIDs, as well as requests for MAID, that have put a spotlight on the holes in our system that showed how we allow for people in our communities to suffer. You’re going to have your eyes opened by this. And that’s a good thing, because then you might actually do something about it, and put into effect new standards for living to take care of your people.
What people get wrong is that this isn’t forced upon anyone and won’t be. These people are asking to go ahead and die, which they will do regardless of what anyone wants. I have watched 3 loved ones die of incurable terminal diseases in the last 5 years. All of them tried everything available to stay alive, but ran out of options quickly. There are just some things we cannot fix. Not every dying person has access to clinical trials and those are Hail Mary moves at best that may only buy a short amount of time. Forcing someone to go through unspeakable pain is not “gods plan” any more than pumping someone full of painkillers until their respiration fails and they slowly suffocate. God will forgive these people and those who help them. If you have ever been through this kind of thing, you would understand. As for the fuel allowance: I don't have enough context as to what led to that decision. Am not from the UK. Our heating here is almost entirely electric and costs peanuts. Even if palliative care is top notch there are still too many delays and obstacles built in to the system in the acute hospital setting. You're absolutely spot on! It's true that trying to understand others solely through outward observation can lead to inaccurate assumptions. We can never fully know what's going on in someone else's mind or what their internal experiences are like. Here's why relying solely on outward behavior can be misleading: Hidden emotions: People often mask their true emotions or present a different persona to the world. What you see on the outside might not reflect their internal state. Misinterpretations: Our own biases and experiences can color how we interpret others' behavior. We might misinterpret actions or words based on our own assumptions. Lack of context: Without understanding the full context of a situation, it's easy to misjudge someone's actions. There might be underlying reasons for their behavior that aren't immediately apparent. Individual differences: Everyone experiences and expresses emotions differently. What might seem like anger to you could be sadness or frustration for someone else. How to improve understanding: While outward observation has its limitations, it's still an important part of social interaction. Here are some ways to improve your understanding of others: Active listening: Pay attention not just to what people say but also to their body language and tone of voice. Empathy: Try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine how they might be feeling. Open communication: Ask clarifying questions and encourage open dialogue to gain a better understanding of their perspective. Consider the context: Take into account the situation and any external factors that might be influencing their behavior. Be mindful of your own biases: Recognize that your own experiences and perspectives can shape your interpretations. By combining outward observation with empathy, active listening, and open communication, you can develop a more accurate and nuanced understanding of others. Hidden emotions: P

Here is my prediction for what happens next… - For the first year or so it will just be an option, you won’t hear much about it except in articles with headlines like “Assisted dying saved my parent/partner/child from years of pain”. - After a year or two a report will come out claiming success via some tortured invented statistical measure like “assisted dying boosts patient well being scores in surveyed NHS hospitals”. - Another will follow claiming waiting lists have improved due to decreased overcrowding in palliative care wards. They might even claim it’s decreased the NHS’s carbon footprint. - Opinion pieces will appear with titles like “Assisted dying success story shuts down conspiracy theorists”. - The minimum age to be considered for assisted dying will gradually be lowered. And the list of diseases and conditions for which assisted dying is a “recommended treatment alternative” will expand. - Eventually non-lethal diseases will be included, then psychological illnesses too. Then physical and mental disabilities. - Then will come an “emergency” - a fake one, obviously - and the NHS will come out of it shining thanks to resources “freed up” by euthanasia programs. - Next will come the editorials. “Assisted dying is good for patients and saved the NHS during [fake pandemic], it’s time to make it mandatory”. - A backbench MP will introduce a bill forcing anyone diagnosed with a fatal illness to be put on an assisted dying list. - The bill will fail, and most of the press will oppose it, but the government will issue “common sense” compromise regulations where assisted dying is the default, but patients can opt out of if they want. - It will never actually BE mandatory. But it WILL be harder and harder to get out of. If you choose to opt-in and later try to change your mind, you will be said to be mentally incompetent. - Patients who don’t want to sign DNRs or opt for end of life care will be branded “selfish” and “irresponsible”. Studies will claim they are a strain on the NHS’s resources. - Down the line, opting out will incur penalties to your pension payments and mean you are charged for healthcare, making it impossible for many older people to afford to stay alive. - Then they’ll start panels where patients who are “mentally incompetent” have assisted dying recommended by “mercy tribunals”. …and the whole time the establishment will claim there is freedom of choice, and no slippery slope at all.

That argument is a bit on its head. One of the major concerns about this bill was that hospitals and doctors might be suspected of trying to SAVE money by bumping off patients who would otherwise cost a lot in palliative care. You're absolutely spot on! It's true that trying to understand others solely through outward observation can lead to inaccurate assumptions. We can never fully know what's going on in someone else's mind or what their internal experiences are like.
Here's why relying solely on outward behavior can be misleading:
Hidden emotions: People often mask their true emotions or present a different persona to the world.
How to improve understanding:
While outward observation has its limitations, it's still an important part of social interaction. Here are some ways to improve your understanding of others:
Active listening: Pay attention not just to what people say but also to their body language and tone of voice.

- For the first year or so it will just be an option, you won’t hear much about it except in articles with headlines like “Assisted dying saved my parent/partner/child from years of pain”.
Move to America, you'll fit right in.

Ultimately though, the decision for an individual to be assisted dying is still a decision in the hands of another person, worst the case in which the decision, would be for a Judge and not for a Doctor to be made. There has to be a way to take the human factor out of they authorization to be assisted dying. In any case, lets hope they start by classifying diseases for which one can be assisted dying, and diseases which don't qualify. And that only people above a certain age group can qualify for assisted dying.
If assisted suicide becomes legal in england and wales then next we're all taking cocaine #StupidIdea

negative thinking, they have CBT therapy for that.
@ I’m worried more about pressure from family, unaffordable hospice treatment which makes A.D more desirable, or the decline in palliative care attention and funding.
As an anecdotal and personal side note; I also don’t think the NHS can always be trusted.

People laugh in stressful situations to relieve the tension.
The more absurd the situation for longer: the more likely it is to happen.
What's absurd is how long it took to finally separate church and state.
What's absurd is letting a religious minority decide that THEIR ideology ought to take precedence over objective, humanistic, _real-world_ compassion.
No one is culling anyone.
No one is taking away anyone's choice to be alive.
In fact: those who finally get to choose when and how they leave will now have the opportunity to be FULLY PRESENT with friends and family on their death bed.

The Bible clearly states that suicide which is in effect assisted dying is not of God in scripture - Ecclesiastes 7 17 and 1 Corinthians 3 16-17. Both Doctor and Patient are condemned for such an act. If you are in pain pray to the Lord Jesus Christ who gives comfort and strength and heals. Believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins was buried and rose again the 3rd day by which we are saved, 1 Corinthians 15 1-4.
Jesus was the first to have assisted dying.
@happydays Karma is on its way.
The Bible is simply a book written by old men a very long time ago.
Grow up !
@@BD4-ManchesterIsRed The Lord Jesus Christ did exist and was crucified. This was documented by the 1st Century Jewish Historian Flavius Josephus in AD 93-94. Therefore we can establish that what was written in the Bible about the Lord Jesus Christ is fact.

The States dispersing of the elderly and the sick like garbage wastage that saves them money. The only view these MPs have is saving pension / benefit money. But they wont bring the death penalty back to save the state paying over 50K per year for a cell for a murderer who does not deserve to breath the same air as the rest of us. It should have been a referendum not a parliament vote. Disgusting Hypocrisy.
Don't talk pub rubbish please
Those in favour, should first try it out for themselves !
I think that's literally the point. If I have a terminal illness, I don't want to suffer in pain. No one is forcing you to take this route if you don't want to.
Those against should volunteer their time to take care of the sick people
