Just found out about these pickups from an Instagram ad (good marketing) and the prices are great! This review really convinced me to try these out. Do you have a comparison of this with the defiance pickup?
Both are great! But that neck pickup in Classic Mode... jaw dropping awesome! If you decide to pull these out I'll take them for sure! I own two sets of Jose's pickups for my telecasters but these will fit nicely in my PRS S2 McCarty. Great products and GREAT review as always Lucas!
Finally got my triple pickup set ordered up the other day that we emailed about some months ago. Legacy’s in N and B and a Pasadena in the middle. Can’t wait!
Ended up getting the defiance humbucker for bridge and i was really impressed by it. As far as passive pickups go, its definitely in the top 3 pickups for me. Truly excellent sound for the price.
Great demo Lucas! I've been running the Aggressor bridge with the Blues Heritage Neck for over a year now in a Schecter and love it. Had a good balance between them in no time. The Aggressor really surprised me playing clean with the volume dialed back a hair. Great articulation with any amount of gain, or none at all. I've yet to try the '59 pickups but, I'll get to them before long ;)
Mr. Lucas , how are you doing,? How would a aggressor in the bridge and a blues heritage in the neck workout . I really liked the heritage combo in your Gibson Les Paul demo . I like high out put pickups in the bridge, it would be going into a dean 79 v . Your the planet tone guru , just wondering. Thanks much 😊🙏👍
I use a Defiance bridge in my frankenstrat, on a 250k volume pot with no tone hookup. It does everything from Maiden to Cannibal Corpse with clarity in spades!
Hey Lucas, When you swap all these pickups out to test, demo etc. do you end up leaving them in the guitars that you demo them in? Also, Do you swap out the volume pot for a new one each time?
@@mikecooper8465 Fair enough! "That's a great question. *Most* of the time, they stay in whatever guitar they are put in, and I do not change the volume pot unless there is a problem with it. I'm fortunate to have enough guitars that I often have an open spot for PT pickups. Jose and I were just talking about this though, so I bought a separate pickguard for my Mira(which is an easy front-loader) so that I can use that guitar as sort of modular pickup testing guitar. I'm going to set up that separate pickguard with wire crimped connectors so that I can easily swap in and out pickups with no soldering, then just swap in a different pickguard: easy peasy 🙂"
Just installed afterburner set for buddy of mine and kicks serious butt, but def want to mention something... those higher output p/u's are, like in past times before but still even for now, for hitting the front end of an tube Amp to push the gain stage to help get that in your face saturation out of that amp. Nowadays we have other options! Amp modelers and very well made pedals that sound really really good.. and therefore a high output p/u is not needed, cuz if you do with those setups, that's where your sound/tone starts getting messy up and down and you lose your clarity. The afterburner set (lower output) sound awesome and very detailed and clear through pedals.. Friedman deluxe, victory Kraken, Rev g3, and ksr ceres.. had a wampler tumnus deluxe in front of all pedals for touch of push for tightness and cut, but again better thru a pedal and not p/u. He's a lead player and those p/u's really shined, me being rhythm player played along with him with a s.d. jb and the mix was absolute great! Might be upgrading tho to planet tone pup like full throttle.. any suggestions on that one or another for that jb rhythm feel?? That's for the videos Lucas!
And if ya wondering why looking for something other than the jb, don't get me wrong it does sound good, but, wanting something around the 13k to no more 14k for lil better clarity and maybe not so much mid bump, tho I want that mid bass punch for rhythm playing but with upper mid cut as well, so ultimately to set next to a afterburner set while not fighting against the frequencies of the afterburner pup. Almost was gonna go with bare nuckle set like polymath set but would like to give planet tone a shot
If you haven't you should check out the Planet Tone Full Throttle. Just put one in my Kramer and I love it. I wouldn't have given these a chance though without these videos.
Dude!! I just saw that your Albums are on PRIME music!!!! I been listening to the ones I bought off of "My band"... "Space camp."... face band..... BAND CAMP!!! itll be easy now that they're with all my other music!! WOOOOWHOOO
I just bought a set of Planet Tone pickups. I was very excited when I got them. I bought the pickups after watching your videos and chatting with someone from Planet Tone about what I would like and the genre of music I play After installing them, I am highly disappointed in the set I received. I bought a full shred bridge pickup and a Legacy neck pickup. I don't like the way these pickups hit the front end of my amp. The way they break up is unpleasant. Both pickups turn to mush when I strum a chord. I read on a forum before I bought them that they were 2 dimensional but I decided to give them a shot anyways. I wanted a modern voiced medium to hi output that has good mids that cut through the mix. I find these pickups to be very lacking in the mids. They are indeed 2 dimensional with farty lows and a shrill top end. I wanted tight lows and good upper mid range punch. These pickups might be good for other applications but they didn't work out for me. My friends played them and they didn't like them either. I'd like to try another set but unfortunately I'm not willing to fork out the cash.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the pickups. I don't think I've ever had anyone tell me they thought Planet Tone stuff sounded 2 dimensional, or really anything negative honestly. Have you contacted Planet Tone for advice? Perhaps something is wired incorrectly? What kind of rig/amp are you playing through?
@@LucasFowler I play through my interface. I use my Helix and have about 10 different presets. They didnt sound good through any of my presets. The pickups are wired properly. I used to do tech work professionally so Im familiar with wiring pickups. The pickups just arent what I expected. I wanted a modern pickup for progressive modern djenty stuff. I dont think Jose offers anything of the sort. Im not looking for vintage voiced pickups and I made that clear before I purchased them. I was looking for an alternative to Bare Knuckle Pickups but I’m finding out real fast that there is no substitution. Dont get me wrong, the neck pickup would sound great in a classic LP shape playing classic rock or blues. They just were not for me. I wanted modern crunch with mid presence and I didnt get that.
@@kkramp1984 Hmm, sounds like maybe you would have preferred something more like an Elite Pro Custom wound with an Alnico VIII mag and some more output perhaps. If you decide you'd like to sell those to someone and try something else, there is a Planet Tone user's group on Facebook where you can almost certainly find a buyer so that you can recoup your cost and try a different set, or just get a set of something from Bareknuckle, or whatever suits you best :) That Planet Tone User's Group: facebook.com/groups/1310705532394496
@@LucasFowler Thanks for your reply. I thought about using the Elite Pro to try and have one custom wound. After looking into it, there is a lot more involved in voicing a pickup, other than magnet type, wire gauge, and number of turns. DC resistance and magnet type are not the only factors for winding pickups. I guess what I'm getting at is, I could use the Elite Pro to try and get a copy of a pickup made but I highly doubt it would sound anything like the pickup its supposed to emulate. It actually seems kinda gimmicky to me. Probably an unpopular opinion I'm sure but it is what it is. If Planet Tone would post other stats like resonant peak and maybe an EQ chart I'd maybe consider it. The reality of it is, anyone can get a coil winder for 200 to 500 bucks and wrap "x" amount of wire around a coil using "x" type magnet and pretend to know what they are doing. I have a feeling that voicing a pickup is incredibly more complicated than that. Thanks again for your response.
Called out from work for an ice storm. New Fowler video. Its going to be a good day.

Which of the Planet Tone pickups would you recommend for a Les Paul to maintain a vintage sound, and be capable of playing hard rock?
For that I would probably go with the Legacy set, they sound very vintage but with the cut of modern pickups:

That guitar is tuned to D# standard, with the low string dropped to C#. So Drop D, 1/2 step down :)
