I've paid for art classes that claimed to also teach its students how to draw shiny metal, and while they did show how they do it and provided brushes, NONE of them explained how it works. This video is what I have been looking for a long time and it blows my mind at how I've had the wrong mindset when it comes to this texture. Thank you Sam for opening my eyes with this new information and for making this video! 🖤
Not only are you artistically talented (a talent refined by much diligent effort), but you have an AMAZING sense of humor as well! Always keeping it real and achievable. 💙
Shiny metals have been one of my favorite things to draw so far (despite not even being all that good at it yet), so this video is just perfectly up my alley
Even though I knew I would have to depict what's reflected, this made it look so easy! It will be useful for my current project... When I figure out what environment to place her in.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SAM this is literally the video i've been waiting for. for the past like three weeks i've been thinking "man i need to learn armor. it's so pretty but i don't get how it works. i should go find some references and practice." and then you SERVED and gave me the exact video i needed!! thank you so much ima go practice now
my face always goes :D whenever I watch sam does arts' videos cus they teach me more than any book or art tutorial ever has and for that I will always be happy also I pre-bought your art book and I've been counting the days since then, waiting for it to arrive lol
This was actually exactly what I needed. The next section of the art fundamentals course I designed for myself is rendering materials. This could not have come at a better time.
Actually … this becomes so obvious when you said about it, but I have never really thought about environment around art characters😮 crazy but helpful thing! Thank you so much for the tutorial!
i know these videos may not get as many views as some of your other content, but i love your art tutorial/info dumping videos, they're so informative!!
The hardness increases as you move towards the edge of the ball, and the reflective becomes more compressed following the contour . Furthermore, the Fresnel effect occur However, you made it much easier to understand. Big thanks xD
You and Kooleen are literally two of my favorite humans. 🖤 I've learned so much about art from the both of you and I've become so motivated to finally work on art more again. I'm getting better at eyes recently, next I'll work towards making portraits and eventually draw bodies. Thank you for your amazing art tutorial!
As someone who would like to one day draw their dnd characters, this is fantastic, thank you. As someone who knows a lot of mini painters, I can never show this to them in case it inspires them to try painting non-metallic metals. Because that way lies madness.
i remember sam referring to himself as an art baby compared to people like wlop and guweiz, of whom he considered art gods. now he refers to himself as an art god! progress! (i received your art book in the mail a couple of days ago and it was PERFECT)
the thing I liked about Samdoes and other Artdads out there and art teachers doing free video tutorials on ytube is that as we improve our arts these people are still out here giving us the tips we needed some reminding us of how far we've gone through in this journey....
I can't even explain how perfectly you timed this! My current project is a knight in armour and I wasn't really in the mood to start the armour, because it looks STRESSFUL. I think I'm ready to start now.
I practice Historical European Martial Arts, and doing so actually helps a ton when drawing fight gestures, designing arms and armor, and understanding anatomy.
3:22 true! I mean it kinda depends on preference me personally I usually use a semi-textured (it has no texture when I press all the way but some texture when I press lightly) flat brush but like I use it for EVERYTHING and it works wonders, but I can do pretty much the same thing with a round brush it really is just a matter of preference
Btw, at 7:00 you said that the jewelery is reflexting the light from her face, but the lightsource is from the opposite direction, so why didnt you draw it on the left just like on the right??
I was thinking the same thing, but maybe he did that because the colour of the skin would appear pinkish-purple, so the reflection in the jewelry would be the same way. But even by that logic, there should be that colour on both the sides. But it's not realism so it doesn't matter much, I guess
THANK YOU I've have so many ocs that are somehow involved with war or fights, so they have a lot of armour and i've been STRUGGELING every time i drew any kind of metal. This helps so much ty man ur insane🙏🏻💜
"No one is ever gonna look at your painting for that long. No one is gonna zoom all the way in and scrutinize every little detail. It's not worth it; not for them, not for you. Just draw what you gotta draw, move on."

Hi! Loving the work! I’ve been trying to make metal but I never found a good tutorial until this.

Thank you for being so gosh darn entertaining while holding us accountable
This is the best video on how to do reflective surfaces I've ever seen, and trust seen a lot
Sam is straight up one of the GOATs for me when it comes to art content. Such a good teacher
IVE been trying to draw metal for ages, and all I previously knew was to include brown and blue, because metal reflects and you need contrast :p
SamDoesArts' regurgitation is the best way to learn.
Sam:BEHAVE YOURSELF 😤

I love your Art Style. My phone is legit only your art and it makes me smile everytime. Thank you so much ❤
I am a huge fan of your art and your growth since 2021
Wow. You made something so daunting and seemingly impossible into something simple. And in only 8 minutes! Can't wait to try it out!

"No one is ever going to look at your painting that long". I needed to hear that.
Thanks a lot, Sam. I don't know if I'd ever be interested in drawing armor, but this is very useful in drawing other shiny objects like jewelry.
Sam has a way of making the hardest things in art more simple to understand. ❤
DUDE I just saw this post on instagram you did so good at drawing armor! My friend and I were in awe bro
You're the Art God! Adorable & funny!!! Your tutorials really help me :)
