This is the first in a series on how to make a traditional American Hickory Flat Bow. By the time we are finished with this series you will be able to build your own from start to finish. This series will be very heavy to tutorial so that you can do this yourself. Self bows are a lot of fun to build and even more fun use. This will be a hunting bow for myself. I’m 53 years old and I’ve seen all kinds of serials and documentary’s and true tv stuff on tv, but I have never seen anything like your journey on the timber barn. I came in late , but I’ve taken time to try to get in order. I’d like to tell you thank you for the greatest video series I’ve ever seen. You have taken me on an adventure I could have never imagined . Your kids are just precious and glad you don’t put them in enough to bring out the pervs. Really like the working guy language , and just all the honesty you put in your post. Hope the leg dosent give you too much trouble in the future but was inspired by your up beat attitude from the hospital post. I really hope this dream you poured so much into provides you with all the hopes you have in mind. Thank you for the amazing adventure you posted for me to tag along with. In the 50's, started archery at 14yo, got a second hand, 2 piece steel bow. Aunty gave me wood bow from Fiji, simple tapered tourist thing. Could shoot as good and long as the steel one.

I’ve been trying to watch all your post but I can’t seem to find how you joined all the beams to the corner post. I’m wanting to build a small horse barn but I can’t find a good vid on corner joints. And really liking the bow build, but here in NC they open bow season way to early. The deer are still covered in ticks and worms under their skin in September . Really enjoying your channel
If you're talking the corner wall posts all it is is a tenon that is 2x8 instead of 2x10 and the girts are mortised the same in the post, you just have a set on two adjacent sides.
If there are worms crawling around under their skin, that sould have their skin kinda loose. That should make it easier to peel the skin off, then just hose them down and pour some salt water over them and let that sit about an hour before butchering. If you want to keep the hyde, wash it with some oatmeal flea and tick shampoo followed by horse mane and tail shampoo (and conditioner depending on what you're going to use the hyde for), then stretch and tan the hyde as normal.

Hi Jim, the bow is taking a shape. Question, why are you backing with rawhide instead of sinew? Just curious as I have never built a bow!

What length of you bow . I just got a six to eight round log have not made a stave yet and had the bark still on it seal the ends of it ,was cut Nov 15/21

Hey Jim shot you a text, get ahold of me buddy
If you use heat on that bend over a period of time it will bend much easier for you and won't split out or break and the "bends" will be worth the time and efforts
Fire harden the belly over a fire while it's on the form and brown it about half way through it will help with moisture as well as keeping the backset you put into it better

Heat isn't going to hurt that hickory one bit it's actually going to help the more you give it
There is another part to this where I used heat quite extensively. I've actually made quite a few bows over the years. I hunt with the bows I make.
