Old Beale Street is coming down
Sweeties' Snack Bar boarded up now
And Egles the Tailor and the Shine Boy's gone
Faded out with ragtime blues
Handy's cast in bronze
And he's standing in a little park
With a trumpet in his hand
Like he's listening back to the good old bands
And the click of high heeled shoes
Old Furry sings the blues
Propped up in his bed
With his dentures and his leg removed
And Ginny's there
For her kindness and Furry's beer
She's the old man's angel overseer
Pawn shops glitter like gold tooth caps
In the grey decay
They chew the last few dollars off
Old Beale Street's carcass
Carrion and mercy
Blue and silver sparkling drums
Cheap guitars eye shades and guns
Aimed at the hot blood of being no one
Down and out in Memphis Tennessee
Old Furry sings the blues
You bring him smoke and drink and he'll play for you
lt's mostly muttering now and sideshow spiel
But there was one song he played
I could really feel
There's a double bill murder at the New Daisy
The old Daisy Ballroom across the street
She's silent waiting for the wrecker's beat
Staring at her stolen name
Diamond boys and satin dolls
Bourbon laughter ghosts history falls
To parking lots and shopping malls
As they tear down old Beale Street
Old Furry sings the blues
He points a bony finger at you and says
"I don't like you"
Everybody laughs as if it's the old man's standard joke
But it's true
We're only welcome for our drink and smoke
W. C. Handy I'm rich and I'm fey
And I'm not familiar with what you played
But I get such strong impressions of your hey day
When I'm looking up and down old Beale Street
Ghosts of the darktown society
Come right out of the bricks at me
Like it's a Saturday night
Everybody's fly in their finery
Dancing it up and making deals
Furry sings the blues
Why should I expect that old guy to give it to me
True blue
When he's fallen to hard luck
And time and other thieves
While my limo is shining on his shanty street
Old Furry sings the blues

1979 I was 7 years old studying in Class 1 when this Song was a major hit and JM was a sensation I still remember. Those Golden Days will never Ever Come.
She was from another world!💚
Sir, she is still alive.
A goddess on earth.
Pure talent without fireworks and acoustic trickery!
This is at Santa Barbara County Bowl. 1979. Became the Shadows and Light album and video. Amazing. Saw the show a couple nights later at San Francisco Civic Auditorium…changed my life
Looks like the Greek theater, must have been a great night!
Wunderschöne Version!
I'm not 100% sure about this venue, but I think it's Alpine Valley in Southern Wisconsin. If it is, I was there with a great friend of mine who convinced to go see Joni. I fell in Love with her that night. Still listening to her. Also, got to see Pat, Jaco, and the Persuasions. What a Great memory for life!
We were there - sat 1st row. Won tickets on radio.
Some backing band, the Pat Metheny Group. Pat is a great jazz guitarist playing some lovely slide for a change on this one.
i love this song,
Always powerful and enthralling, but I prefer the studio version that includes harmonica,
which, to my ears, is the time machine that gets me to Beale St back in Furry's day.
My favorite imagery in this song is about the pawn shop.
The harmonica was played by Neil Young.
genius transcendent untouchable
Wow, haha, I was not expecting the pimp character from the Don Juan album to make an appearance in this video, "dancing it up and making deals"! Love it.
If push comes to shove and I had to pick my favourite Joni song, it may very well be this one - certainly top five anyway. The lyrics are incredibly evocative... I'm there in Memphis, flipping back in time between the 1970s and Furry's 1920s (?) heyday
That looks like the Shadow's& Light version but it's ever so slightly different so must be a different night? Joni is wearing the same clothes. Great upload though and greetings from England.!
There is the ' younger' JACO getting his ACT together ... = MAGIC ! .... Thanks to .... whom ?
Good Holy 'shit' ...
Que halagos sé le puede hacer a Joni Mitchell?; sí todos juntos serían apenas una nota, ante la sinfonía de Joni Mitchell mismo
How many guitars do you have??
Boring? Your ears and mind must be filled with a lot of rubbish music. Listen to the tuning of her guitar, her intro, how cool she is performing, singing, how the drums come into being and Pat's slides, the atmosphere this music creates, only Joni with her musicality can do that. And the lyrics? Joni ones said that this part following Pawn shops... is some of the best she ever wrote.
And finally the lucky audience! Is there anybody bored? They are listening to the very last note. Good that you were not there. Shadows & Light is by many critics considered as one of the best live album and this song is just sublime.
Try harder to get it.
damn! this is one boring song! And Furry hated it, but besides it is really really boring...
If you don't understand the lyrics...
@@davidespinosa1910 actually I do, still boring, but to be honest it doesn't matter, if to appreciate a supposed beauty of something I need to understand it that means that beauty doesn't transpire, she tries, but fails, she's no poet regardless of her ambitions...
@@micheleulysse not greatest of her largely genius work , experiment ing with different styles
yeah, well the studio version is more upbeat, but can visualizing the story. The backstreets south of the Peabody Hotel gets dark and gloomy. Can imagine the heyday when you played those shanties,,,😢😮😅😊
@@nicstone4592 I've been appreciating Bob Dylan all around the world, and you? slippers and Joni?
