I immediately recognise this clip from the sign on the road from lochgelly to glencraig the beware of subsidence ,road sign,as a bairn I always wondered what that meant, but seeing this film it brings it all back.thanks so much for posting this it should be in a museum it is priceless.
Fascinating movie. The pit with the men starting and finishing their shift is the Minto Colliery or Brighills as it was also known and also shows Bowhill colliery in the background. Later on shows the Mary pits in Lochore, now Lochore meadows park.
My dad worked here until it closed,he took me to the canteen one day and bought me a pack of old English spangles funny how things like this stick in your memory
glencraig, Brighills, Cleard area where Lochgelly Happyland used to be including Grays street allotments then meadies before reclamation...fabulous film
Like down at the perch hole so black and so deep, or after the big trout in the bay where they would sleep Oh life was good when you're young and so bold But now its just memories and dreams when you get old
I worked there. First as a picking table laddie, with last women in the UK who did this kind of work. I went underground as a coupler and. Snibler. I worked the very last shift before it closed.
Yes I recognize the Mary pit, near the end of the film. It's such a pity that in those days hardly anyone had the means to record sights, sounds etc. I would love to see more footage like this, but it's all too scarce.
Dreams of Childhood at the Meedaes I've started to dream of all the times when we were young and each day was filled with joys We would climb the hills and walk around the Lochs never giving a thought to toys We would climb our nearest mountain, Benarty was its name Or we would wander through the Weewoods, hunting all the game The Meadows was our big swampland, and Loch Ore was our big sea
l lived in Benarty Av or Street in Kirkcaldy! My father was a Miner all over Britain then we all immigrated in 1976 to Melbourne Australia Been back a few times love it ! Coming back
This was a poem I wrote about this your seeing The Meedaes and look away in back and see Bowhill Pit, I worked in Lindsay at Kelty stayed there most of my life with a coalmining family we were
Great memories looking doon the Lysie Brae frae Lochgelly ower tae Bowhill Pit the Meedaes looked better then the mess they made of it as seen today, the big loch on left belonged to Ballingry fishing Club and on right was the big pond where free fishing and big troot I will get my Poem about what it was like then my playground whin a wis a bairn ain whein i warked in thi pits.
And many a raft or homemade ship was found sunk or floating free Sometimes we would sit on the redden ash of the Aitken Bing so high And dream of the wild strawberries at the back of the hill And in the warmth of the sun we would just lie We would gaze at the cooling towers, as they thundered like rain And we would look at the grass with a mild disdain We would talk of the great times we have had there before
It does look like Benarty hill in the distance, (The sleeping giant) and the meedies, now known as the meadows, my dad will know as he worked there and I will send him the link 2nite, his name is Hugh McManus and my name is Tony McManus
