The Greatest Rivalry in Sports History (Magic vs Bird)

  • The greatest rivalry in the history of sports....Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird...They not only redefined the game for the modern television era but did so while unwittingly shouldering much of the country’s racial baggage...In doing so, they capped a period of basketball’s development and stamped their personalities on a decade. By the time they were done, the game was speeding on from where they’d brought it.
    They were a bridge between the old and the new, their impact inseparable from the place both pro basketball and the country were when they emerged into the spotlight three decades ago

    I remember back in the 80s being a fan of those Celtics teams, particularly of bird. I remember how those Magic Johnson Lakers would actually strike fear in me. Every game. Even the ones that we one by Twenty points. I also remember my best friend being a Lakers fan. And him telling me that he felt the same way about bird. If you are Celtic or Laker fan you loved one of them and kind of hated the other one. Such a great time to watch basketball. Nothing like magic and bird in this age. Never thought I'd be saying this but, but both of those guys are starting to become underrated.

      As a Los Angeles negative, and black, and born in the 70s, I’m sure you can imagine I was a staunch Magic Johnson/Laker fan, and literally hated Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. Just like you stated, the Celtics actually struck fear and my anxiety, and when they beat us in 84I felt bad literally for days.

      @@troyelam8978 funny thing is, being a Celtic or Laker fan from the 80s, neither side argues so much about which team was better, it's more about how great of a time it was to watch basketball and how amazing magic and bird both were.

    I followed both these guys since the NCAA MSU vs ISU finals. I was from Indiana but I was a die hard Magic Johnson/Lakers fan. I loved Magic, hated Bird, but respected him as a player. A lot of people ask if Bird or Magic could play in today's league. I believe they both could. The reason, these two guys were among the most fundamentally sound players ever. It's all about fundamentals and a team first attitude.

    I know MJ was the most skilled player of all time... and if basketball were a 1-on-1 game he'd be the GOAT... but it's a team game... and what Bird did with a team was unparalleled. Bird is the GOAT, in large part because Magic drove him to new heights. The 80s were insane. Having two of the greatest ever playing at the same time spoiled fans like never before nor since. This sport owes these two EVERYTHING.

      @gogetter5137 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Stephen Forfer Let it go dude. No one agrees with you. Larry Bird was the most fundamentally sound, skilled player in NBA History. His intangibles are only matched by Michael Jordan.
      Pistol Pete was an outstanding college player...arguably THE BEST collegiate player of all time. But Larry Bird was a TOP 5 college player of all time..not far behind from Pistol. But you have to face the facts man...unfortunately, Maravich's game DID NOT translate that well in the pros. That fact and his substance abuse derailed and shortened his NBA career. It was VERY SAD what happened to him.
      Larry Bird was not only a TOP 5 collegiate player...but he was also an ALL TIME TOP 5 NBA player. He just kept getting BETTER AND BETTER...season after season. Larry Bird was THE BEST player in the NBA from 1981-1988. HE DOMINATED the league for 7 straight years!
      I know you are a Maravich SUPERFAN that loves to hype Pistol Pete? (in every single Bird video for some reason...lol). But for some strange reason you continue to allow your love and bias for Maravich to overshadow the FACTS!!
      Pistol Pete Maravich in 2019? I don't think that he's even considered to be a part of the 50 greatest NBA players of ALL TIME anymore. In 2019? Larry Bird is still widely considered to be a TOP 5 NBA player of ALL TIME!.
      Your hatred of Larry Bird will never magically make Pete Maravich a better basketball player than Larry Bird.
      Don't you think it's due time you accept the truth and move on?

  • @nathanrobinson3653
    @nathanrobinson3653 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is one player in the history of the NBA who averaged 25-10-6--that player is Larry Bird. There is one guy who had a near quadruple-double in 31 minutes (30-10-10-9) without playing in the 4th quarter--that player is Larry Bird. There is one player in college history to average 30-13-5--that player is Larry Bird. There is one player in NBA history to take a less-than 30 win team to 60 wins his rookie year and then a title in year 2--that player is Larry Bird. There is one player who was the first to shoot 50-40-90--that player is Larry Bird. There is one player who went 6-0 v. Jordan in the playoffs and beat Jordan 65% of the games they played in--that player is Larry Bird. There is one player who is called the GOAT by the vast majority of his peers that played against both Michael Jordan and Larry Bird--and that player is the GOAT -- Larry Bird. Michael, you were the greatest finisher ever, but the greatest, unselfish, team players with the greatest, all-around game--you aren't even top 10. Your rebounding and passing numbers are low and your selfishness, high. I would take Duncan, Jokic, or Magic over you without hesitation. If I needed a guy that insisted he got 30 shot attempts a night and had the ball in his hand for the first 22 seconds of the shot clock to do something with then I guess Jordan is my guy, but I don't want guys who need 30 FGA/night and need to be the scoring champ 1st because then they need a Robin and then a coaching savant, and then a premier rebounder, premier defenders, premier 3-point shooters, etc. to win a championship after the true legends have all retired. I wonder when people who never saw Larry Bird dominate Jordan in the 80s say Jordan, you are the GOAT, does he really believe that in his heart? I hope not for his own mental health sake. I can see casual fans getting caught up in the hype with the dunking and Nike and everything but Bird not only saved the Celtics and made everyone around him better, he saved the league, too. I watch Jordan highlights today and I see a fast, quick, competitor, who is the greatest finisher at the rim--but it seems one dimensional next to Bird highlights. I watch Bird film from 40 years ago and it is still fresh--he is doing things all over the court that still aren't being done today. I can't believe watching film of Bird from 40 years ago and it looks like it is from the future. If you think he couldn't play in today's game I would say, "Well, he's in his 60s--what do you expect." If you said, "No, I mean in his prime." Then I would say to you what the multiple-time defensive player of the year winner Gary Payton said, "Larry Bird would give it to you any way he wanted to" or the HOFer and 4-time champ James Worthy, "I would rather guard Michael than Larry"

    The problem was in the 1970s the NBA was falling out of popularity with the public so when the NBA bought out the ABA they acquired dr. J it wasn't until dr. J arrived in the 1980s in the NBA that they made the NBA a lot more fun to watch because he could dunk so incredibly awesome remember dr. J was Michael Jordan before there was a Michael Jordan so it was not just Larry Bird and Magic Johnson that saved the NBA it was dr. J and Larry Bird and Magic Johnson made it fun again and they definitely saved the game and the 1980s starting with that big college game in 1979 all the way through to Larry Bird's retirement in 1993. it definitely goes to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and dr. J for saving it.(( for the 1980s will forever belong to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson)) and that will stand forever!!! for saving the NBA the ratings Grew From these guys and and the people couldn't wait to watch the NBA again so that being said the 1980s error of basketball belong to Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and the. 1990s error of basketball belong to Michael Jordan that's the way I see it the 80s belong to Larry Bird and Magic and from 1991 to 1998 the NBA was dominated by the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan now let's see some real Superstars get out there and do something like these guys did I doubt if it'll ever happen again the only one that even comes close is LeBron James

      Trust me its all driven by black and white. If it weren't for race and racism no one would even care. Its all about the physically talented, showboating, fast moving black athlete or team versus the physically limited, hustling, hard working, high IQ, blue collar white athlete or team. This narrative was pushed back then and it continues to be pushed today. Just search Bird on youtube and every other comment tells you he was physically limited, but he was a hard worker with the highest basketball IQ of all time. When black players are discussed IQ is hardly ever part of the conversation.

    The greatest one to one rivalry possibly. There are a few in golf and tennis that would argue. Its nowhere near the greatest rivalry in sport tho, There are Team rivalries far far bigger too . Liverpool, v Man utd (soccer) Barcelona v Real Madrid (Soccer) New Zealand v Australia (rugby), Ali v Frazier (Boxing), Federer v Nadal (Tennis), I could go one . Much bigger on a world stage

      If you had mentioned World Cup Football team rivalries than maybe I'd agree with you. Liverpool vs. Man U? No one gives a fuck about either of those teams outside of England. New Zealand vs Aus in Rugby? LOL. No one gives a fuck about Rugby on the world stage. Federer vs Nadal? I LOVE this rivalry. But no way is Tennis a more popular world sport than basketball is.
      Bird vs Magic might not be #1....I'd agree that Ali-Frazier is a more worldly rivalry....But Bird-Magic is absolutely TOP 3. That rivalry brought the NBA to a different level. And the Jordan SLAM DUNKED IT from there.

It was the teams who made the rivalry. The greatest rivals were Chamberlain and Russell, who played against each other more than 140 times and played the SAME position. This is the greatest rivalry of all time. Magic and Bird were not rivals as much as their teams were. Please don't post hyperbole when it doesn't apply.

When it comes down to it the greatest rivalry in NBA history whether people want to talk about or not is Chamberlain versus Russell every time down they faced each other.

      Maurice St.Pierre Wilt and Bill Russell wasn’t really a rivalry in my opinion because Bill was kicking Wilt’s ass. Magic and Bird was a rivalry because of the two dynasties fighting for the top spot. Bill won 10 rings on Wilt. That’s not what I would call a rivalry. Magic and Bird played two different positions yes, but they were still was rivalries because at least Bird was able to overcome Magic and the Lakers a few times. Wilt was never apart of dynasty. For your team to be a dynasty your team would have to win three championship or more for me to considered you as such.

      Bird and Magic were both team players. Their rivalry expanded out to their teams.
      Bird is still stung by the loss at the NCAA finals. Why? Sure, he lost, Magic won. But more importantly, I believe, it's that he didn't get the win for his team. I believe, for Bird, it's about his thought that he let Terre Haute, ISU and his team (and anyone else he thinks was affected) down.
      Shortly after that game, there was a game called the Pizza Hut All-star Game. He didn't have to play. He still had that broken thumb. But he'd promised some guys back home who worked at Pizza Hut that he would. Long before the game and the NCAA finals. They thought It would be wonderful if their guy played in "their" (Pizza Hut) game. So he did it. Because he'd promised. Gotta admire that. 🙂
