100% I love MSFS for IFR work, especially in VR. We all know how effective "chair flying" can be and the sims add the time compression and cadence to it.
9 months after your post and its still helping people. I just finished my online instrument ground course and man does this video put into perspective a lot of the concepts and terms I've learned. Things are clicking! I also play MSFS on VR and its a game changer. Although you said its not to teach approaches I still feel it was very educational. Thanks for your video. MEOW!
I know this an older video, but I just came across it the other day. Like you, I chose aviation as a second career, and at 46 I needed to move fast so I chose ATP. It is a very demanding program and you must sometimes teach yourself in order to stay caught up. You are correct, MSFS 2020 has helped me immensely while going through the instrument training. Sometimes you only see a certain approach once or twice and you might not fully grasp all the concepts…like a DME arc or a circle to land. You can get on the flight sim and fly it repeatedly until you have it down.
Adding PilotEdge is an absolute game changer for me. I struggled with my Radio Coms and it pairs real ATC controllers with the Sim in real time. They also have thier Cat and IFR ratings to train you. Its pricey but worth every peny in my book
Hi! I just purchased the new Xbox and started flying yesterday on the sim using my Xbox controller. Im a new instrument student and this is just great. Thanks for posting this= this is the video i was hoping to find before i learn stuff about IFR this week with my new cfi ill be working with. This video was very much helpful to me and I can’t wait to get into the advanced side of IFR training.
I really enjoyed this! I learned on the ol' 6 pack and have not flown more than 4 hours on a glass system. I like these videos because it helps me to see how to interact with the equipment better. I've also, never flown with auto pilot (those 4 hours of glass were in an autopilot equipped archer but I didn't get to use it).
Hey, Trent! Been following your channel for a while, really like the content, and especially this in particular. MSFS Tip - you can request a specific approach in the ATC panel...this normally resolves the issue with atc giving altitudes contrary to the approach minimums... usually... but your mileage may vary, can't guarantee 100%
This was fantastic. I couldn't decide if MSFS was worth the trouble for IFR training, now i can see that it is. I need help getting set up. I have done enough to complete a couple "VOR flowers" as demonstrated by Flight Insight. A couple 5 min videos on setting setting up the VR goggles and getting the approach plates while wearing the VR goggles would be helpful. Thanks for the video.
watched the entire 40 minutes, loved how you tied the real flying to the simulator... i'm a pilot (not IFR rated) and i don't have the time to fly and stay safe... I have a top of the line VR setup and I use it almost daily as a way to stay "in the know" and just relax at night@@trent_dyrsmid
This is super helpful! I picked up a Turtle Beach yoke and throttle a few months ago, but I was wondering exactly how I could actually get decent 'time value' out of it. Problem solved!
I have used MSFS since I started training. I'm not IFR yet but it helps in in the VFR world for flows and such. Maneuvers can be tough but all good. pattern work and doing flight plans are great. I love to be able to fly places I haven't yet or will. I don't do VR yet since I have gauges and such that work for my 152 and archer training aircraft well. on the glass instruments I've heard knobs can be annoying, you seemed to do well with them. I keep thinking VR is the way to go though. what headset are you using, Trent? great videos as always!
Got a question…We bought the velocity one yolk and throttle console for MS flight sim using Xbox. We love it! Is there a way to integrate the meta VR goggles to use with our setup?
In the process of getting a computer to run MSFS now (MAC guy so won't run on my OS). Could you show us a picture of your simulator set up? What controls are you using for Yoke, Rudder Pedals, and Throttle / Flaps?
I liked the video but it was hard to follow along with exactly what you were doing because there was too much back and forth movement between the displays. Also I had my resolution turned all the way up to 1080p and still couldn't make out all the fine detail. If you could correct these items I think I could get a lot more out of it. Thank you.
The in sim ATC altitudes crashed me into a mountain when doing a night flight to Aspen, CO. I've heard there are some other plugins or some sort of smarter ATC you can install.
@@trent_dyrsmid I found the old comment recommended to me, it was Pilot2ATC. There's a free trial and it works with Navigraph too. Vatsim is another option if there is coverage where you want to fly
Great video! I’m starting my instrument training this week. Thinking of getting MSFS but don’t know all the specifics on controls I would need. What does your setup consist of?
IMHO, MSFS is light years ahead for IFR training. The G1000 is nearly identical, plus you can connect your Forflight to MSFS….or you can use Navigraph….which is awesome.
Great video! Question, are u having any issues with Navigraph in VR? Navigraph is super small for me in VR? Congrats on earning all of your ratings by the way. Great job!
What’s your system specs? Would love to get into VR but afraid my specs are too low. It’s more than minimum requirements for VR, but I’ve heard of people with RTX4090’s struggling to get good frame rates when playing VR. I only have a RTX2060.
Hey Trent, I’ve got a modest flight sim set up at home. Currently finishing up my private pilot course. What recommendations do you have for using the sim for the private course? I’m mainly just been practicing maneuvers and performance takeoffs/landings and emergency engine failures. What’s the best use of time in your opinion?
And are there any warnings against using sim in our flight training? For example, bad habits that can form from getting used to the sight picture from a screen without all the motions of the plane?

Absolutely!

Do you always get access to live ATC regardless of when you fly? If you have a link to demo video, I’d love to see it :)

if you ever can, you should try it in VR, it's next level awesome
Agree!!

very helpful, I just started instrument and this will be a great help. thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I hsve a VR set up also. Thanks, this really helped! I normally just do pattern work but I’ll start implementing flight plans and stuff !!
Good idea! Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment! I read every commemt personally 🙌
I’m definitely watching this one a few times! Thank you!

I use an HP G2. There are newer better headsets now, but for the price, the G2 is very good. Glad you enjoyed my video :)
Great video, as always! Can you please recommend a VR set that works great with MSFS?
I use the Reverb G2. Works great and isn’t expensive. The Vario Aero is probably better and is now available for $999

Missing links in your description as you commented there should be some.
Thanks for the reminder. I just added them.
Incredible

That’s because i did this flight in VR. I need to see if I can improve my VR footage.

Great video! I’m starting my instrument training this week. Thinking of getting MSFS but don’t know all the specifics on controls I would need. What does your setup consist of?
My set up is fancier than most people require. All you really need is a yoke and a throttle.
Thank you for the video! Can you plan in G1000 failures?
I’m not sure if MSFS has a feature for that. I’ll have to take a look next time I’m in the virtual cockpit :)
Does it also MSFS also have the Garmin G3x touch?
Not sure. I think maybe in the Carbon Cub?
How does MSFS compare to X-Plane 11/12? Currently in the IR stage of my training and I want to get the sim that's best for that.
IMHO, MSFS is light years ahead for IFR training. The G1000 is nearly identical, plus you can connect your Forflight to MSFS….or you can use Navigraph….which is awesome.

Thanks so much….and Navigraph works great for me in VR.
How do you feel about x-plane for beginners? No PPL yet.
Anywhere I can go for sim flight training while I study for my written exams?
I’ve only tried Xplane once for about an hour, and was not a fan compared to Microsoft.
How much did this system as a whole cost you , this is great !

I have Nvidia‘s most powerful graphics card, and would not recommend VR for anyone with anything less than that.

Use the simulator to practice everything that you would be doing in the real world.
Which VR set do you use?
HP Reverb G2
@@trent_dyrsmid thanks.
✈️
Can I get this on PS5 or something similar to it?
Xbox
That poor line tech just standing there as god puts him through hell in every season.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!!
Next step is to fly on VATSIM. Then it's basically like real life but without the boring refueling, walkarounds etc.
🙌
I can't figure out how to sync my foreflight. Xplane is much better
