      @HunterGathererCooking it's awesome once you get the hang of it and you only use it when you need to otherwise leave it folded in.

    Glad you managed to get one and learn some valuable lessons.
    The good thing about quad sticks is they can be used like a monopod if a quick set up is required, I would suggest setting yourself a time say 3 or 4 seconds from deploy to target acquisition and dry fire.
    You can also utilise what's around, fence posts, trees etc, the practice will help with muscle memory, making it easier as you go.
    Don't forget, the wind decides your approach, noise and smell get taken by the wind but looking at the footage there was little sign of wind on this occasion.
    Final comment made by James is one that should be taken seriously, as to why don't they shoot many on this slope?
    Pulling the trigger is the easy bit, extraction should be always in your mind, luckily for you it was a Roe that could have been bagged and carried out, if a larger deer and by yourself it would have been a different story.
    Keep going Alex, practice makes perfect and these things happen naturally, good luck.

      Thanks (sorry I don’t know your name) this is really kind and good advice. The irony was at the beginning of the day we spoke about a shot like this and it then turned out to be THE shot. I think if we had to we could have driven down or walked back up the dean to a lesser gradient. James was amazing he let me make a lot of mistakes, I of course checked in with him on a few things but the experience was incredible. I’m a bit nervous about putting the next film up where it doesn’t go to plan but I hope it comes across from the right place. I wish the shot had been better but I’m glad I was with James to guide me through it. Hope you are having a great Christmas

    Hi Alex, I’ve followed you since the firebox days! Great to see your journey progressing. Be careful not to get sucked into the myth of the clean carcass head and neck shooting. Not against it at all and I do it regularly. I’ve got 17 years of stalking and 20 odd years of shooting, even with your amazing progress your personal book of shooting is still in the prologue. Social media and the industry, contentious comment, push clean shooting which for venison production is fine: but it takes experience of marksmanship and absolute familiarity and confidence in your kit through hundreds if not thousands of rounds shot. Walk before run. Love your enthusiasm mate keep it up 🦌👍🏻

      Much appreciated. I woudlt normally go for the head but it was led down when I made the decision 😂 it then stood up and I should have reverted back to engine room. I think I’ll be leaving heads where they are for the time being so fear not. I’m a bit nervous about the next film where it goes wrong but we shall see what happens. I learned a lot……

    What's the difference between stalk and hunt?

    • @HunterGathererCooking
      @HunterGathererCooking  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Great question…. I kinda knew it was a country origin thing but this was what I found on Google. If anyone else can wade in I would be grateful.
      The term deer hunting is used in North America to describe the hunting strategy of deer without using hunting dogs, but in Britain and Ireland, the term generally refers to the pursuit of deer with scent hounds and unarmed pursuers, typically on horseback. The hunter is called a game stalker.
      Neve have I used hounds or horses though 😂 I guess the term evolved and stuck?

      The stalk can also be the sneaking into range part of the adventure.
      Translating to american is hard but I think it's normally referred to as still hunting or spot and stalk. Happy to be corrected though🤔

    • @tulours
      @tulours 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I’d say hunting is general term and there are many forms of hunting. Stalking refers to the practice of being on foot actively pursuing an animal rather than say being in a high seat. Great vid

    • @jasondoyle6061
      @jasondoyle6061 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Traditionally in the UK "hunting" would always have been to hounds and "stalking" would be the spot and stalk of deer . Over recent years the words have become somewhat interchangeable.

    Roesack and a decent headtorch. And pick your shots with regard to recovery. As others have said, just a roe. But even they get heavy after a while.

      The irony was the head-torch was in my bag, in the car 😂) a roe sack is a good shout though! Will definitely be looking at those now. Thanks Toby, good advice. I’m looking forward to Scotland and Norway now!

    Real world stalking. Something you don't see a lot of on TH-cam. I've just started my journey into centre fires, stalking and shooting, and it's redreshing to see things go sideways as it's not something that is straightforward. Mishaps happen, and it's good to see how others adapt and overcome.

    Simple rules you learn the hard way 😂
    1 make sure it drops where you can park the truck next to it
    2 Dont shoot the Big Bastard when your on your own . The tailgate is a big lift for 130lbs floppy dead weight

    Great video so far, goes to show stalking isn't just turning up and popping one like most of these youtubers show. Hard work and many miles walking.

    Fantastic video Alex. Long form video is so engaging and you have done a great job of putting it together and telling the story. I'm really happy you kept the headshot bit in. 2 weeks ago I had a long conversation with my shooting coach about this. Then practiced on some static targets to see for myself.
    I got my answer that session, and so glad I had the conversation and practical time.
    I'm really impressed with the video mate, well done. You must of put alot of time into the editing. Congratulations

      You need to find the purple flower in the wood but not the one with yellow speckles, it has to be the one with the white speckles, you then take that to the muffin man, yes the muffin man, he lives on Drury Lane. Once you are there you will receive a key which you will need to take to Neverland and as everyone knows, you fly in the sky to the second star on the right, and straight on till morning! Good luck pal!
