Hello, I am Veronica from The Netherlands (Amsterdam) living now in the UK Kent and just won (bidding) a Lladro 'Little Sleepwalker' Child Sleepwalking Figurine 24cm Slight Damage it says. Which is not, three fingers are missing and today I have learned about the existence of Milliput. Great! As my husband had cracked a part of the toilet and the ceramic sink as well, while doing a repair job. So hopefully I will fix the fingers and use mine to crack-on with the rest. Thank you with showing me how to do it. Has ordered on eBay the Milliput super fine white (hope the yellow goes with it) before winning the figurine as I figured that no one wants to buy it any way. Going after the German Waterproof sandpaper 300-800 and the Micro Mesh 1200 sandpaper followed Rustins quick drying ceramic glaze (10 days drying for a 100% result). Only have to find your link what kind of 'porcelain paint(?) you use as I do not want to shock the sleepwalker when he wakes up and find out his white fingers...All the best!

I have a mug that the artist forgot to glaze in the kiln. I do not want to destroy the mug because it's from 1949. I do however want to preserve the bottom where the year is scratched in and the artist name with some sort of glazing that will withstand washing. Is there something i can use without using a kiln/heat? Thanks for the milliput tutorial. I have another piece that needs repair. :)

Hi there, I am sorry to hear that you are finding it difficult to get hold of products. Winsir and Newton Acylic glaze is fairly mainstream, again it is a cold glaze. 👍
I will try that, thanks! My problem is the paint has gone on too thickly and looks ugly. I have been gently sanding the paint back but with the blue 1200 sand paper I have been using the blue colour marks the paint. I am finding matching and getting the paint on cleanly the most challenging. Your videos have been inspirational. I might just say its a Museum Repair !!@@theceramicrepairstudio
I am practising repairing on a chipped Portmerian Mug, which I love. On rubbing down, I've managed to dull down the original glaze to one side of the chip. How do you prevent that happening in the first place? Can I paint the glaze over this area when I'm finished. Love your videos, by the way.
Hi there, once you have painted your item and are putting on the glaze, I would just lightly extend it to the original bit you dulled down. Sometimes it is very difficult to not sand an edge if an original, just carful sanding. Glad you like the vudeo. 🥰💕🍀
Hi from Mobile, Alabama! I'm trying to figure out how to repair an Italian terracotta giraffe whose had the fiddly bits (ears and horns) knocked off and poorly repaired with what I believe is an epoxy resin, but not sure. I'd PREFER not to remove the old adhesive as it's mostly sunken below the original surface level. Would miliput or green stuff adhere to the old adhesive? Also, I've heard that green stuff is easier to mold (like a tiny snake or ball shape) for getting into tight creases, and that miliput is best for easy to reach or larger repairs. Please share your thoughts. I really appreciate your channel and advice! Cheers.
Hi there, I have never used Green stuff as I tend to use Milliput. I would always take off old glue, but if you can't I would personally use Milliput. Although it depends on how much old srlurface glue there is the adear.
I am a thrifter and always find beautiful pieces with chips or cracks. I will now be able to purchase those pieces and try to repair them myself. Thanks for your tutorials. God bless.
I enjoyed your video very much. I did notice at the end of the first video you left extra milliput on the jug, a 1/16” it seemed all round. So I’m assuming milliput has shrinkage? I don’t think you mentioned whether it did, but I got the impression one should not mold the shape to be perfectly aligned but leave room for shrinkage? Thank you.
Happy new year Alison. I have a project! An art deco naked lady statuette which I think is made of plaster. She was originally a green colour but has been sloshed with magnolia emulsion. Eek. How can I get it off. Her head was also broken and needs to be re-attached, but it's the emulsion paint which is the problem. Have you any suggestions? Looking forward to your new restoration project.
Hi Barbara, Happy 2021!. With regards to your statue, taking emulsion paint off plaster can be tricky. You could try very gently scraping it off with a small putty knife to loosen the paint. If you do use this method try a patch test first in an area which isn't obviously seen. Good luck and please let me know how you get on.🥰
Hi Alison ..my Chinese teapot has a hairline crack where the handle meets the body ..I gather I must have bumped it? ..can you please suggest what I should use to seal the hairline crack and reinforce so the handle doesn't break. I still use the teapot and am trying to save it from breaking. The teapot is about 80 years old and is beautiful!
Hi Andrea, you could strengthen with sliw release glue or if a larger crack Milliput, unfortunately the handle will be a weak point so I wouldn't recommend holding the handle afterwards.
Hi Margaret I cannot entirely say yes, as it depends on the temperature in which you was it ext. Also a teapot lid would get lots of steam so not sure. Please let me know how you get on.🥰
this glaze dosent need firing to be food safe? I have a ceramic bowl chip from edge. If i use milliput, do I have to glaze the chip part to make it food/dishwasher safe? If yes then do i have to fire it too?
Hello, I'm going to be following your tips on how to repair some beloved mugs, and bought a micro-mesh cloth (same grade as in the video), and wanted to know what the texture of the cloth should feel like - I'm visually impaired, and to me one side feels like cloth and the other a little bit tacky, almost like rubber...is this a protective layer that can be peeled, or is that what it feels like? Thanks so much for your videos! I first watched your “how to” video and was able to fix a very sentimental mug from my Gma from 1987!! I was just wondering, will the Milliput hold up if I wash the mug with soap and water? Also, any idea if it is safe to drink from? The fix is along the edge and I try to avoid it every time I drink 😂 Thanks again!
Hi Chloe, many thanks for your comment. I have used Milliput on the rim of plates and mugs and have washed them in warm soapy water. As long as you have sanded down 'no sharp edges' and have washed the item I think it is ok. For clarification though I would check the Manufacturers instructions either in the packet or online. So pleased you managed to fix your sentimental jug. 🥰
Hello Alison, thanks for your videos. I have watched some of your videos but are still a little bit insecure about painting and varnishing. My projekt is a overglazed, white ceramic elephant lamp I would like to paint black with Winston Winston, use some gold leafe like the one you used on the dogs collars and then finishing with glaze. Then let the ceramic dry for 10 days you said. Does that mean I do’nt need to put the lamp in the oven for the gold and glaze to harden?? It is confusing because other people put the ceramic in ovens after painting but I ca’nt do that with a lamp. Cheers Mette, Denmark
Hi Mette, many thanks for your comment and for watching. The glaze I use is waterborne so better for the environment. It is fully hardened in 10 days WITHOUT putting into an oven. I do use treasure gold often, but there is also a product called liquid leaf in gold which I would highly recommend, I used this product on a pair of Staffordshire greyhounds video 'painting and varnishing ceramics ' if you want to take a look. Hope this is useful to you and please let me know how you get on. 💕

I find many wonderful items at flea markets - right now I have a set of six French hand painted fish plates from the early twentieth century, but two have rim chips. I love that I can save my grandmother's china it's discontinued and several pieces need repair. The covered Casserole dish, bottom is cracked with staining and large chip at the top. I believe I can try to save it from your vedios. Will look for your advice on stains? Thank you ❤
It might be restorable, but keep in mind that these materials aren't non-toxic so the moment it is repaired the ceramic shouldn't be used for food serving. I think it's great that restorers and conservators are demonstrating their techniques, but people with no training should be aware that we take academic degrees to learn how to do these repairs.
Slightly confused. First you explain why you need to sand from the original to the filler and then you are just going back and forward which is doing what you just told us not to do.
Hello, I would like to know how is the glaze food safe ? I checked with the supplier and they replied: Rustins Acrylic Ceramic Glaze Clear is toy safe and it not tested as food safe. The product itself is self-curing based on self-crosslinking polymer. Do you think I can drink coffee with a cup repaired with Rustins ?
I am so happy I found you again. I watched one of your videos a year or two ago, and then I couldn't find back to your channel - until now. I bought a cheap china dinner set, where some of the plates have small chips. (Part of the reason I got it so cheap). Luckily the seller kept the chipped plates, so I could buy a full set. I REALLY love the set, and want to try to repair the chips. Just need to watch a few more videos, and maybe rehearse on some other porcelain first. I enjoyed this, it gave me one of those slapping the head "Dough!" moments. Your tip on finishing the last bit of sanding from the original ceramic to milliput, obvious to me now you mention it but its where I have consistently gone wrong and could not work out why I kept getting a ridge no matter how careful I was, thank you for opening my eyes on that one. Do you ever create Kintsugi pieces (repairing with gold)?

If you use to sandpaper carefully and work dow the grades without touching the original, when the Milliput is almost flush the you use a very light sandpaper to blend in. I do have a lot of videos on sanding if you want to look.

Hi Paul, many thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. I am glad you have found the videos useful. When it comes to glazes Winsor and Newton do a ceramic glaze although I have never tried. When it comes to brushes I do prefer to use a flat brush when glazing.

Hi Ali, I'm a German Figurine maker living in New Zealand. I made an elaborate piece with a girl sitting on a wall. The dress was very difficult to make. Even tho I took great care it got hairline cracks in 3 places. So I searched the net for someone who is an expert in fixing ceramic/porcelain and found you. 😊❤😊. I have tried to find your products here in New Zealand, which was an impossible undertaking. So I bought something that I am hopeful that they would do the trick. I found milliput, but not the same glaze you use. Greetings from the other side of the world. 😊
So the "Rustin's" glaze is where you can repair any missing glaze on pottery or porcelain without a kiln then? Let dry for 10 days and then i can use my mugs? Is there other brands here in the US that i can get that aren't as expensive?

Hi there, if you still have the chipped pieces you could glue them back on then fill the cracks with Milliput. , If you are going to be drinking from the mug I would just fill with Milliput. Please let me know how you get on..
I learned about Milliput in 2021 when my sister (who was at the end of her cancer journey) had a fall in her garden. She'd broken her fav ornament. I asked my aunty, who i knew makes and sells pottery, down in Devon. If she knew if it could be repaired without using that awful glue that goes yellow. She recommended Milliput. Wow! The things i have repaired since then is endless. It's amazing stuff. I just didn't know about the Ruskins glaze product. I'm looking forward to trying that out.

I think it's great that restorers and conservators are demonstrating their techniques, but people with no training should be aware that we take academic degrees to learn how to do these repairs.

Slightly confused. First you explain why you need to sand from the original to the filler and then you are just going back and forward which is doing what you just told us not to do.
When going back forward and forward I didn't apply any pressure from the Milliput to the china. Sorry hard to see in the video.

I use Milliput and Araldite slow curing glue.
Hello, I would like to know how is the glaze food safe ? I checked with the supplier and they replied: Rustins Acrylic Ceramic Glaze Clear is toy safe and it not tested as food safe. The product itself is self-curing based on self-crosslinking polymer. Do you think I can drink coffee with a cup repaired with Rustins ?
This unfortunatly is such a grey area. I can only suggest looking at the product description on the Rustins website.

I am so happy I found you again. I watched one of your videos a year or two ago, and then I couldn't find back to your channel - until now. I bought a cheap china dinner set, where some of the plates have small chips. (Part of the reason I got it so cheap). Luckily the seller kept the chipped plates, so I could buy a full set. I REALLY love the set, and want to try to repair the chips. Just need to watch a few more videos, and maybe rehearse on some other porcelain first. Hi there, the glaze does make the cup water proof, when it comes to being food safe I would recommend looking at the manufactures instructions.
When I sanded my repaired mug, the sanding paper took off the polish of the porcelain. WhT can I do about that?
You could apply some clear glaze.
How can I avoid scratching the original porcelain?

I enjoyed this, it gave me one of those slapping the head "Dough!" moments. Your tip on finishing the last bit of sanding from the original ceramic to milliput, obvious to me now you mention it but its where I have consistently gone wrong and could not work out why I kept getting a ridge no matter how careful I was, thank you for opening my eyes on that one. Do you ever create Kintsugi pieces (repairing with gold)?

Don't you get scratches on the original glaze after sanding ? How do you deal with them ?
If you use to sandpaper carefully and work dow the grades without touching the original, when the Milliput is almost flush the you use a very light sandpaper to blend in. I do have a lot of videos on sanding if you want to look.

Thanks, Alison. I really enjoyed that. I was trying to repair a favourite mug with interior filler. It was going well until I rubbed off acrylic paint I’d added and the filler came away too! Your videos have come to the rescue. Thank you. I’ll get some milliput. Not sure if I can justify the cost of the glaze for a single item (I’m Scottish!). Please keep the videos coming, they’re terrific. Didn’t you recommend a flat brush then use a round brush 😂? Thanks again, from the Clyde Coast.
Hi Paul, many thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. I am glad you have found the videos useful. When it comes to glazes Winsor and Newton do a ceramic glaze although I have never tried. When it comes to brushes I do prefer to use a flat brush when glazing.

Hi Ali, I'm a German Figurine maker living in New Zealand. I made an elaborate piece with a girl sitting on a wall. The dress was very difficult to make. Even tho I took great care it got hairline cracks in 3 places. So I searched the net for someone who is an expert in fixing ceramic/porcelain and found you. 😊❤😊. I have tried to find your products here in New Zealand, which was an impossible undertaking. So I bought something that I am hopeful that they would do the trick. I found milliput, but not the same glaze you use. Greetings from the other side of the world. 😊

So the "Rustin's" glaze is where you can repair any missing glaze on pottery or porcelain without a kiln then? Let dry for 10 days and then i can use my mugs? Is there other brands here in the US that i can get that aren't as expensive?

Hi there, if you still have the chipped pieces you could glue them back on then fill the cracks with Milliput. , If you are going to be drinking from the mug I would just fill with Milliput. Please let me know how you get on..

One question. Is that Ruskin's glaze washable and is it dishwasher safe or only hand wash??
I learned about Milliput in 2021 when my sister (who was at the end of her cancer journey) had a fall in her garden. She'd broken her fav ornament. I asked my aunty, who i knew makes and sells pottery, down in Devon. If she knew if it could be repaired without using that awful glue that goes yellow. She recommended Milliput.
Wow! The things i have repaired since then is endless. It's amazing stuff.
I just didn't know about the Ruskins glaze product. I'm looking forward to trying that out.
