It’s actually a remake of the 1927 version which starred Al Jolson and was semi autobiographical. It’s the first talking picture, although there were some scenes that were silent. Neil Diamond is from Brooklyn and is Jewish but his father wasn’t a cantor.

You're right about both. Neil Diamond IS a total showman. But not quite this glam. This clip IS from a movie. The Jazz Singer (1980). I haven't seen it since I was a kid at camp, but as I recall Neil Diamond plays a young man who is the son of a cantor. His father wants him to follow in his footsteps and he wants to sing - - well - - I guess Jazz. As I recall it was a very good movie; I've only thought of it again in recent years since I started watching reactions to this song. It's a beauty. He wrote it in honor of his immigrant grandparents. Hope you enjoy it. BTW, interesting tidbit alert: this gentleman went to the same high school (Erasmus in Brooklyn) as Barbra Streisand. They were in different classes and didn't know each other too well, but they WERE both in the school chorus. Thanks for reacting to this. All the best!!

    • @jillk368
      @jillk368 ปีที่แล้ว +11

So, yep. The people they keep focusing on in the audience are the characters of his father (the late Sir Laurence Olivier) and I'm pretty sure the woman is his wife or girlfriend (played by Lucie Arnaz). In the movie, I think this is when the father finally goes to see his son do what he loves to do.
Some more great Neil Diamond (this is a VERY deep well, as in addition to his own performances and recordings, he's written a sh*tload of songs for other singers, the list is long). For songs that he wrote that he himself is famous for performing, I'd start with Love on the Rocks, Sweet Caroline, Hello, Again and the song I literally had in my head for hours at work today (it's what I get for watching reaction videos over breakfast) Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show (with the live opening intro/monologue - - it's interesting). Anyway, and yes, Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty. Neil's grandparents were Jewish immigrants who left Eastern Europe during the anti-Jewish pogroms - - here they came to be able to worship freely. He meant this song very deeply. Great reaction. Yes, his outfit is totally badass.

I remember when I first found out that little old man I had watched when I was little was Laurence Olivier! I was gobsmacked! I haven’t seen an actor who could so completely hide himself in a character the way he could. Best actor I’ve ever seen. His Richard III change the way I see evil, because he was so vile and charming! How he pulled that combination off I’ll never know!

If you want to know this man's effort...as far as the work he puts into each performance... just listen to his song "Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show" from the live album "Neil Diamond: Gold - Live at the Troubador" (the best version of the song...if you can find it.) You can hear the sweat pouring off his face as he belts it out. (Not literally, of course.)

This was Neil Diamond at the height of his powers. The Jazz Singer was a powerful movie. There were lots of dramatic conflicts and a lot of really great music. Please, please, please do Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show! That song is one of Neil's early hits in the sixties and it will take you to church. I promise you'll be pulling out the church flag for that one. I've seen him in concert three times, but I would not go to see him again. The voice is no longer what it was, and I want to remember it at it's best. He wrote nearly every song he sang. He did a few covers, and wrote songs for other groups too. He wrote I'm a Believer for the Monkees, and Red Rubber Ball, and several others. I'm a diehard fan, and have been for over 50 years.

He retired from touring in 2018 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It looks like he’s made a couple of appearances since then, and I think he sang a song at one of them, but at 82 he’s not up to doing a concert, especially with his high standards. Thank God we live at a time when music can be recorded and enjoyed by all decades later.

I saw him in concert in the early 1980's. This was his opening song. He rose up from under the stage and started belting out this song - Goosebump moment - plus he was wearing a bright white shirt with beaded fringes down each sleeve and they had every spotlight on him! Very magical! I had great close up floor seats because I went to the concert with Neil Diamond's drummer's cousin! We also had backstage passes for after the show to visit with her cousin , the drummer. Didn't get to meet Mr. Diamond but it was still cool going backstage! That drummer also happened to be Elvis Presley's drummer as well. He was a pretty well known drummer! His name was Ronnie Tutt.

Neil Diamond was touring in 2001. The Brooklyn boy scheduled his NY homecoming at Madison Square Gardner for October of 2001. It was only a few weeks after 9/11. My parents purchased tickets months prior. They debated whether to go out of fear, but with a strong NYPD presence, they went. On the backdrop of the stage was the American Flag drapped with a Black Ribbon. And it was this song that he opened the concert. Everyone was on their feet, singing with tears of sadness and pride. They played this song for the music. When it got to him singing “America: My Country this of thee”and saying “Today!”, it was amazing. They had all 3 screens flashing at different times with the musics and photos. My little 12 year old mind was blown. My kids would think that was medieval in today’s standards. As I type on my iPad with my AirPods in, I still remember sitting in that class and being blown away with that slide show and this song!

The song is about his grandmother escaping to United States of America, at the time she was nine years old, she was not a grandmother yet that's what this is about Neil Diamond was born and raised in Canada.

I was fortunate to have seen him in concert at the Hollywood (FL) Sportatorium on November 22, 1982. This was his opening song and... after his set and two encores...was his 32nd and closing song. After over forty years, I can still feel the pulsing vibes and remember seeing the American Flag unroll behind him! Thank you for the memories.

I love Neil Diamond. When I was 20, he was impossibly old and corny. Then I was 30 and he was someone talented and outspoken and a little mysterious. Then at 40, it was WHOA he's amazing. Now, honey, he can be 80 and bald or frail or anything and I still think he's one hell of a man. He can reach right into you and grab you with that rich voice and that presence and delivery. He has written so many hits for so many bands and artists. He's a once in a generation talent.

This is a great song! I grew up on Mr. Neil. My aunt was in love with him, [her era]. Cherry Cherry, and Cracklin' Rosie are very nostalgic for me too. He is talking about immigrating to America. Women used to bring roses to his concerts and throw them on stage.

I remember this song as a kid of like... 9, I believe. ...this song was everywhere. Some of us believed hard in what we were taught. They called it the Great American Melting Pot... A notion of a country and culture built of many cultures and beliefs, and we celebrated that people wanted to break free of their old traditions in their homelands to share in the opportunity we had, here. I know it was naïve. I know terrible things had happened here, in the U.S., and were still happening at the time, but we had hope. We had dreams... I still believe in that notion, even if nobody else will. That's my America.

Luckily he has a huge list of awesome songs to discover. I'd recommend one but it really doesn't matter. While I may have my favorites, he's never recorded a bad soong.

I was a Tree People at the Greek Theater on August 24, 1972. I'll never forget it. I was just a street kid with my pals. We heard the music and climbed the one tree outside that had it's branches over the wall into the open air theater. There was like 12 or 13 of us,not moer. We all crawled out into those branches and he waved to us in recognition.
He mentions us in the Hot August Night album.
    * So many people claim to beTree People that the tree would have broken it's branches trying to hold them all.

The scene for this song "America" is the finale of 'The Jazz Singer' (1980).
This was Neil's first (and last) leading movie role. It was the third re-telling of the story. The first in 1927 was the first talking movie, with musical scenes. The second was in the 1950s.
The story revolves around a young Cantor in New York, who wishes to use his musical gifts in modern music rather than leading his synagogue in the holy songs of the Jewish faith. His father, his grandfather, and back for several generations were Cantors. So Yusel Robinovich, using the name Jess Robin, makes a bid as a singer-songwriter, against the wishes of his elderly father. Things come to a head when Jess has been cut off from his father and community but must still return to sing "Kol Nidre" on Yom Kippur seeking his own atonement with his father. At least in this version of the story.
The people that were being cut back to were Jess's girlfriend and father. The girlfriend was played by Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (of 'I Love Lucy' fame). The father was played by one of the titans of British theater and films, Lord Laurence Olivier (Academy Award-winning actor and director).
There are several great songs written by Diamond for the film: "Hello Again", "Love On The Rocks", "Summerlove", and "You Baby Baby" (a fun song that unfortunately happens in a scene that is just not kosher...sorry, bad pun!). The first three I list are just amazing!!!

Yes, it is from the movie "THE JAZZ SINGER" the young woman you saw is LUCY ARNAZ (daughter if Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz from the old "I LOVE LUCY" comedy series) and she plays Neil's "wife" in the movie. The older gentleman sitting next to her is Sir Lawrence Olivier who is playing Neil's FATHER. They are Jewish in the film (and Neil IS Jewish in real life) and his "father" doesn't approve of him becoming a pop singer, he wanted his son to be a CANTOR ( a cantor sings and leads prayers for the members in the congregation) It's one of my FAVORITE movies and the songs in it are wonderful.
YES, THIS SONG is about IMMIGRATION, especially from Europe. My Paternal grandparents immigrated to the US from HUNGARY in the early 1900's, as so many did from a lot of the eastern European countries during that time. They sailed into New York City harbor past the Statue of Liberty to Ellis Island, where immigrants to the U.S were processed. "AMERICA" appears at the end of the movie "THE JAZZ SINGER." You should seek it out and watch it sometime. SAD NOTE, Neil Diamond is now suffering from Parkinson's Disease, and I just saw Neil on a segment about him last week. He is a shell of himself, and is not really performing any more. SO many of our stars have Parkinson's Disease (Like MICHAEL J. FOX - who starred in the "BACK TO THE FUTURE" trilogy of movies, among others and TV shows as well.) I am so glad I was able to see Neil Diamond live in concert in the early 2000s, he always put on a GREAT show.

#Brittreacts Fun fact: Neil's outfits were specially design to be electrically charged. By changing the setting on the charge that would change the color of the outfit. Made for very easy changes between songs, by stepping behind a curtain or stage equipment he could change the color of his outfit based on the next song. We saw a Neil Diamond tribute artist in Branson, MO that goes as far to be authentic that he also has one of these outfits and makes his live shows amazing.
