Big Jet TV: Taking plane-spotting to new heights

  • Jerry Dyer has loved all things aviation since he was a child, but it didn't fit in with his career as an interior designer. But three years ago Jerry left his career behind to follow his love of planes and he set up Big Jet TV. What started out as a small smartphone live-stream now has thousands of subscribers across the world on TH-cam. Our transport correspondent Tom Edwards has been to meet Jerry.

    I’ve never understood how non plane enthusiasts have such a hard time understanding why anyone would be interested in aircraft. If you think of everything in the world, planes are one of the coolest most interesting things around. They’re the pinnacle of engineering, technology and design. I never understood why people think plane spotters are weird.

      I love planes and I am a pilot , but planespotting for me is strange. It's like loving cars but spending hours watching them drive past writing down their number plates. I would rather fly an aeroplane. I dunno, just not my cup of tea I guess.

    • @TheLuxentertainment
      @TheLuxentertainment 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Stefano Falcini I think it has to do with multiple things (I am a casual planespotter myself) :
      Planespotting comes pretty much free
      For the ones who have no possibility to fly yet it‘s the closest you can get to an aircraft
      Planes remain more fascinating (to this day, that might change in the future) than cars to watch cause obviously they fly, but not only that. They are loud, fast and big and every landing is different so that might catch ones interest. Also planes are not yet as common as cars. I mean who cares about hundred thousdands of boring cars driving by you every day. If i had the possibility to watch Ferrari‘s and big Mercedes/Audi/Porsche all day long and photograph them I might even do that.
      General aviation planes for me are absolutely boring to spot for me, it‘s mainly the big jets that are interesting. Even short haul aircrafts are not that fascinating to me anymore (in terms of simply spotting them)

      @@TheLuxentertainment I can understand that completely. Maybe you should take up flying lessons as well ! Aviation is one big family at the end of the day :)

      Stefano Falcini I‘m thinking about maybe taking glider lessons, but if not I‘m aiming to do the PPL one day anyways. Currently I‘m studying mechanical engineering at university though 😅

    I have been aircraft spotting for just over 40 years and it has truly evolved. I started off at Manchester (which is my home drome) standing at the side of the runway or going on the Piers into the "Glass House" in the days before enhanced security and expansion took over, with binoculars and notebook in hand. The pier access has long gone. Then went over to the RVP, known then as the AVP. Now, ill health beats me sometimes. But I have gone with the technology and have had for over 10 years a fully set up personal ADS-B (Virtual Radar) system running at home, with an aerial on the roof receiving signals. I live under the approach to Manchester 23R so it works for me. I can see on my screen everything live (unless the aircraft isn't transmitting on Mode-S) 40 miles around me. This morning I have "Bagged" an Ethiopian Airlines B789 and a couple of Biz Jets to go in the book, so not a bad start to the day. One day I will take my system mobile (Just a laptop, ADS-B Box (SBS-1) with a Magmount mobile aerial and metal biscuit tin lid to act as a ground plane) and take it down to Heathrow.

    I was as a kid a Train (in the days of steam) spotter. Cold grey wet Saturday morning at Clapham Junction, London. Collecting numbers as these giants thundered through the station. So I can totally understand the enthusiasm these people have for aircraft. And in a crazy, stupid world I (who knows nothing about passenger aircraft but is starting to learn, thanks to Jerry.) Sit and watch and enjoy the calmness that comes over me....... Until...... Jerry STARTS TO SING..... 😮

    I'm proud to have plane spotting as a hobby, but when you do it as a business I think it takes away the fun element of it. Surely you get paid to do what you love, but it becomes work rather than play when you've got 'customers' and ad revenue

      Canadian Plane Spotter I disagree. I think most people would love to get paid for their hobby.

    Why are people who aren’t interested in planespotting, interested enough to watch a video about it and shout down someone who’s interested in it? Grow up!
