I experienced severe anxiety and depression all throughout jr. high & high school right into my twenties. I'm sure it was from growing up in the church along with all the name calling and bullying I got from other kids. I never got help I because I also had crippling shame and didn't know how to ask for help. I think I also hated feeling like a "case" when it seemed like everyone else around me was okay. Too much of my life was eaten up with issues that should have been addressed so much earlier. I'm glad he got the help and is on a better path now.

Act fast when you notice something wrong...very good advice. Unfortunately for me the first time I ran into problems, like Joe, I let it go on too long because I didn't recognize the warning signs. I didn't have that experience. I didn't even know I had a problem until it was too late. It's good to hear someone else's experience to help us recognize when to act. Thanks for posting this.

Awww poor dude. That is an incredible story of how human nature favors honesty and goodness. I came out in high school, but nowadays, now that I'm working as an architect and developing my career, I feel a real uncertainty about what it means to come out: to co-workers, to clients, to my boss etc... everyone assumes I'm straight and most of the time I don't bother to tell new people about my sexuality, despite the fact that I'm also married to a man. I realize that something I thought I would never again have an issue with has resurfaced.

I grew up and came out in Placerville in the 90s. By the time I got to the stage in my life where I could get places like New York City, something in my trauma and just my age just kept me boyfriendless and I struggled to find dates there too. I’m glad New York City worked out for you but relocating to a city doesn’t always create the connection opportunities for all of us that we really need from adverse mental health conditions we endure being raised in less supportive environments.

What a handsome, wonderful guy. As a fellow 21 year old gay man who is struggling with the hardships of being a gay man in this world, I needed to hear this. Although I have been out to virtually everyone in my life since I was 13, the other aspects of gay life have impacted me vastly, and I it is so important for gay men to have platforms to share their experiences with other gay men. :)

An important message from a seemingly nice man but like so many of his generation he would be a more effective communicator if he did not incessantly use the word "like". By actual count he said the word "like" seventy times in this clip.

Folsom is a suburb of Sacramento. California's capital, metro area of 2,500,000 with a "gayborhood" called Lavender Heights and one of the most gay cities in the country as a percentage of the population. Please don't make it sound as if you grew up in the middle of nowhere with no access to a gay lifestyle or support.

I came out in Sacramento back in the 90s and grew up in Placerville 50 miles away. Sacramento is a very mixed bag and Folsom and other areas of the suburbs could be quite conservative. But yes, this man had it a lot better when they had a short drive to get to where there was a supportive area in Midtown Sacramento, and even San Francisco, which was less than 100 miles away. Placerville in the early 90s coming out was just really scary.
