There has never been a better metaphor than calling the empty husks of cicada nymphs zerglings. Chef's kiss. No notes. Beautiful. I loved this episode. Cicadas turned out even more fascinating than I thought they were. Great Patreon question/answer too!
54:00 insects peeing is not something I've ever thought about before. But I will be thinking a lot about it now, now that you point out the physics of waste disposal are very nontrivial at such sizes.
Maybe I'm red queen-brained but I thought the prime number year cycle was due to other enemies such as parasites, but I like the other outside-the-box hypotheses you gave here

I have a friend who told me that when she was a kid, she thought the sound cicadas make was the sound of heat in summer. Thought that was cute
Great episode!! 🪲🐞
I would love to hear an episode about the Lions. 🦁🦁
Awesome episode! I think I remember hearing that the parasitic fungus is actually hallucinogenic for humans too. Did y'all find that as well?
As a kid i always developed tenitus during summer or fall. Turns out I saw an anime with cicadas and realized it was them this whole time!!!!

Parasites could absolutely be playing a role similar to predators. The prime number cycles may avoid seasonal parasites as well.
Great episode indeed
