    Construction crews set off explosive charges this week to sever the cables of the Metrodome's roof in Minneapolis. The explosions were part of a gradual demolition of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Twins from 1982 - 2008 and the Minnesota Vikings from 1982 - 2013. Last month, the stadium's famous white roof was deflated for the last time, while the support cables continued to secure it. The Metrodome will be replaced with a new one billion dollar stadium for the Vikings. Report by Mark Morris.

    The Twins still called the Metrodome home in 2009. They moved to Target Field in 2010. The narrator made a mistake.

    What was wrong with the Metrodome? Isn't building a new stadium just a waste of money?

    • @Am-Not-Jarvis
      @Am-Not-Jarvis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Satoshi9801 You have to have been to a game there. It was a dump. Lots of memories were made there, but it was a dump. Also, the stadium would have needed extensive renovations anyway because, as evidenced by the roof collapse a few years earlier, it wasn't safe.

    • @maxcohen13
      @maxcohen13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also remember there were dedicated people to open the doors in intervals at the end of games. Pressure built up during the games in that bubble, and people were getting shot out of the place if they left early. Insane.

    For that price I'd expect heated seating & individual waiter service......but then I imagine $1 billion isn't unrealistic for a sports arena of such proportions.

      I would imagine they would have removed the speakers before demolition, whether they sold the speakers or junked them I don't know, but stadium speakers are pretty expensive so I don't think they would destroy them.

      it's going to be state-of-the-art. The original Metrodome that you see here back in 1982 was far ahead of its time! They wanted the same concept for the new stadium. They are emphasizing natural light and most of the new stadium's roof and side will be made of a new plastic/glass type of material that is weather resistant (since in Minnesota below zero is more common than sunshine) and also protect from UV rays. It will cost a lot of money, but the metrodome did as well (for the time) and it paid for itself quickly as well as gave many great people jobs and pride!

    • @KnievelFats
      @KnievelFats 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Minneapolis is already in massive debt because of a high welfare community that doesn't pay taxes. Why not attack that demographic's impact to a debt-ridden area instead of attacking funding a stadium that the state can use for a great source of revenue and benefits the entire state as well as a massive fanbase around the Midwest and Canada. At least this is funding our future and future economic growth.

      ***** I go to U of Minnesota and although I think the city and the university spend too much on constructing new buildings, they shouldn't worry about the new stadium since Vikings have a huge fanbase, so they will sell out every game and they're a potential candidate to host the Super Bowl. Also Minneapolis' economy is doing much better than most other cities right now

    Went to one Vikings preseason game there (against my Cardinals) and several twins games between 1997 and 2009 (video says the twins last played there in 08 but it was really 09). Even might have a grainy film photo of Sammy Sosa hitting a home run there during the home run chase in 1998. I will miss the Metrodome.

    GOOD RIDDANCE! They should have NEVER built this Shithole in the first place, and kept Metropolitan Stadium a lot longer than they did. The Mall of America would have been better set in Downtown Minneapolis anyway rather than where Metropolitan Stadium sat in Bloomington.

    What is with the influx of British announcers and narrators ? It seems like almost anything you watch anymore there is a Brit speaking. If I ever turn on the NFL, NBA, NHRA, NASCAR, etc. or anything that is based in America and a Brit is announcing it, I'm done. I doubt that Americans are taking over the airwaves in the U.K.
