He visited her producers in the studio (because they were also One Direction producers, so he knew them well) and they were working with Ariana at the time. And one of them suggested he writes with them a song for Ariana and he agreed to do it. Ariana was recording at the time, and when they were finished they played it for her and she loved it immediately. Apart from that he never changes any pronouns in songs he covers. And in the end it's a cover, because even though he wrote it, it's Ariana's song now. It's amazing though.
