- hello home brewers,
So to carry on the brewing from the supermarket I wanted to make a simple sugar wash but with out yeast nutrient it's almost impossible. but that won't stop me from trying!
So in true making homebrew wild and cheap fashion I am experimenting with using yeast to make yeast nutrient at home.
Will it work I have no idea but we are going to find out!
I live in various countries in Africa where home brew shops are scarce at best! This is what I've been doing for all my washes and mashes; it works every time.
I use bread yeast (mainly SAF Instant). For 20 liters mashes/washes, I use 2 tbs of yeast boiled for 10-15 minutes in 1/2 liter of water and 1 tbs poured in the wash/mash to ferment it. My other additions are: the juice of 4 limes (acidity) and 4 tea bags infused in one mug of water for 10-15 minutes (tannins).
Doing the above, I have made wines with 13% ABV.
hey, its good to know others have done this too :) I thought i was being original :P
indeed tea wines are pretty good considering they are essentially tea. I did a version a while ago pretty much the same, swapping out lime for lemon and adding sultanas.
no one could guess what it was other than good to drink :P I'm going to have to do more experiments with bread yeast and yeast training to see what can be done, for science of course :P cheers
"Yeast training": do you mean pushing the ABV above 13%? If so, I'm looking forward to seeing what you achieve. Never tried it as I dump the yeast after each fermentation. However, I am currently trying a step fermentation but it's still going and I'll let you know what I achieve.
Anyways keep up the good work; you're doing a fantastic albeit unconventional job with this channel. Cheers!
indeed, the idea is to see if bread yeast can be cultured into a specialist yeast and to see if treating the yeast differently produces yeast suited for specific environments. step ferments are always fun if not a little time consuming, if you were wanting strength freeze distilling ( freeze refraction ) could be an option. :)
That is a complement I am more than happy to accept :D cheers
Do you make your own nutrition yeast?
Hi fam, I'm grateful for your comment. I'm going to make honey wine for my school project. Any advice, tips will be helpful. Please I need your WhatsApp contact so we can chat privately. Thanks
Hey mate, I hope you are well! I miss having new videos of yours pop up in my feed. It has been a year last, I think.
I truly wish you the happiest life in whatever you are doing these days. Cheers mate🍻
Great idea, been thinking about that myself. Will definitely give it a go.
Thank you! How much yeast did you dissolve?
How much bread yeast did you put in the water
Thank you for video, with the yeast and water you boiled up to make nutrient was there any sugar added.
so for how long i have to boil it to make marmite
how long did take on fire unit it done idol ty
Fingers crossed! Sounds very interesting! I’ve made mead using bread yeast and yeast nutrient and it goes off like a rocket BUT it is very dry. I’ve also used raisins and, although a LOT slower, I think makes a slightly sweater, nicer tasting mead. Will try this, if it works. ;)
Paul Taylor hey, I do like my meads dry I have to admit :) rasins add a little bit of extra body to meads :) well if it works it would be great to know that you could use it :)
Well I made an apple and cherry mead using Asda fruit juice and honey and it took only about 2 weeks from start to bottling! Seems like everyone liked it though as from my 2 gal batch I managed to grab 2 wine bottles from the 10. :D lol
Lol, that's always a good sign :) it does seem to work out like that, over 80% of every thing I make on and off the camera get devoured :p
How much yeast did you use
You can actually use as a nutrient blackstrap molasses
Did you add any sugar to the yeast/water mixture prior to adding to the pot? I plan on trying some of my own trials as well.
hey, no. as this is being boiled to extract the nutrients from the yeast it would be a little pointless to add sugar. :)
@@makinghomebrewwildandcheap Thanks for the quick reply! I was mainly curious if you let the yeast colony multiply before killing them off. Other than that, do you happen to remember your water/yeast ratio?
cool :) nope, it was just a simple bread yeast dump, to get them to breed you properly you would need to aerate them constantly and since i already had billions laying around i didn't see the need.
it wasn't exact but 3/4 of a tub of bread yeast to around 700ml of water.
I would have thought that if you "prove" the yeast by adding sugar the yeast is going to produce more of the sterols they need and so the yeast you are using as nutrient would be more nutrient rich than simply using rehydrated yeast. Have you experimented by comparing whether it is more effective to add some sugar as you rehydrate the yeast or if it makes no difference?
@@kb2vca hey, unless you are willing to set up a yeast breeding chamber adding sugar is just going to either make your nutrient sweet or make alcohol. much easier just to add more dried yeast
How long did it take on fire until it was ready, i am trying this neutrient now and i don't know when to stop ?
thats really up to you, the longer its on for the more it breaks down and also condenses.
Didn't the yeast nutrient you used in your sugar wine video only contain ammonium salts?
Hi
Is that water a normal water and add the bread yeast to it?
yes. your standard run of the mill tap water and yes it is bread yeast.
@@makinghomebrewwildandcheap
OK thanks
but you talk about nutrients and I didn't see you put on it ...Did i missed something?
I apologize to you..
I'm new to this thing and I can not find brewing yeast so l have to do it
This video is about making a simple nutrient using bread yeast as a nutrient.
it's for low alcohol brewing :)
Soylent Green for yeast!
When you say «yeast nutrient», do you mean «nutritional yeast» or «food for yeast» (which «yeast nutrient» sounds like)?
Hey, it's food for yeast not the cheese alternative :)
Hi and thanks for posting this educational video. after you cool it down and sediments have been settle. Do you pour the whole container in the wash? Or just the water and discard the sediments?
hey, i just put the whole lot in. the yeast eat the dead cells too :)
@@makinghomebrewwildandcheap thanks a lot for replying :)
@@makinghomebrewwildandcheap how much yeast did you use to make the yeast nutrients?
Hey, A whole tub of yeast.
making homebrew wild and cheap how much in a tub? Here we have little pre measured packets. They have like 14 grams each or so.
hope it turns out well
Back Yard Brewing hey, I hope so too :)
You want to kill the yeast so it doesn't compete with your yeast. 185 for 15 minutes should do it.
Could you just use marmite?
Yeah you could then again I could just use yeast nutrient 🤪
@@makinghomebrewwildandcheap I tried last night and have has success making a starter with marmite which I already have quite a lot of. Thanks for helping me put two and two together!
@@BenryanALS for how long i got to boil it.. plz reply
to make marmite
@@Chemoscopy I didnt make the marmite. I always have it in though.
Yeasts boiled alive.. somehow made me wanna cry...
Well if it makes you feel any better it was old yeast and it was quick, the fresh, young and strong yeast, I enslave and put to hard labour and servitude for the promise of freedom .... But it's all a lie they all Destin to die. 😋 so I guess it could always be worse
@making homebrew wild and cheap Justified! And I thought you were evil and mean...🤣🤣 cool vids btw bro.. subscribed you
I don't think it will work.
Try with a source of nitrogen (ex. Ammonium diphosphate) and trace minerals ex a mix of Molibdenum Vanadium and Selenium.
benzedrex hey, I'm not too sure I can find them easily in a supermarket. :)
making homebrew wild and cheap ammonium diphosphate maybe not but baker's ammonia is available...
About trace minerals you can buy a multivitamin with minerals
benzedrex yeast contains just about all the vitamins and trace minerals needed, the nitrogen is an unknown factor.
making homebrew wild and cheap um...what do you prefer to eat: cooked cadaver or fresh veggies?
Yeast doesn't contain enough trace mineral to activate properly the enzymes involved in the fermentation process.
How is your home made nutritional supply working?
I would always go for the cooked cadaver ( Steak!) with the veggies if possible :)
It's a good place to start when limiting your self to things readily available in the super market that have a neutral flavor.
I guess when I start the experiment we shall see how it turns out.
Whats the purpose of wasting people'stime? I guess because you can, right?
You seem to be the expert so I will leave that to you
If you don't like it don't watch it, they've came up with a startling new invention! It's called the off button. Believe it or not some people are actually interested in this sort of thing!
Useless vid.
