I love this films, but am always tinged with a little sadness, noting the loss of the unifying values that Australia no longer seems to possess.

It's because most of the films are curated/propaganda. Speak to older people from the working class who lived through these eras, I've shown a few to older family members. They say this was idyllic but detached from reality.

Ideals are honourable and inspire the viewer to emulate high standards. To have portrayed urban decay, dysfunctional families, privation, or degradation might have been perceived as counterproductive, wouldn't you say?

Looks lovely. Many places in Australia looked so delightful in the 50s and 60s....

Once highly regarded university of New England. The Armidale Express went the way of all small news papers... There are many issues but one is lacking small businesses as there are many closed shops in town and is very sad

Now much like Tamworth- Armidale has turned into a hole from when i was a kid in the 90's growing up throughout the New England area

People had more respect back then, they were hard working back then, we had hardly nothing but we were happy. Good times back then, wish I could go back in time.

Related to 7:00 and the University ceremony.
The University of New England is recording as being formed on 1 February 1954 - with Dr Robert Madgwick as Vice Chancellor.
So likely filmed quite a bit before the 1958 release date of this film.
Do not see any expected 1958 FC Holden's but do see 56 or earlier FJ Holden's and a 1955 Chevrolet.

Thanks John. Interesting information. Yes as you have noted release date of films can be some time after most of the footage was shot. Sometimes a good few years.

Great town to live in. Very Australian and very multicultural.

2:43 we use to swim there, it’s ebor falls, the next one was wollombine falls, there was a big aboriginal massacre there when settlers came in it’s sad. My grandma was born there and my son was to be but went to Brisbane for my brothers wedding and went into labour after the drive up born a few weeks earlier and was unexpected. Now the town has a lot of social issues.

the buildings in the town centre are untouched, however the life of the streetscape is dead due to the construction of a shopping center which has basically cannabalised the scene, and the country looks the exact same.

You can see the way the land has had every tree cut down for cattle.

Yes, what's also sad is absolutely no mention of the Aboriginal people living in Armidale in those days. Whole families like the Widders, and people like old 'grandfather' Frank Archibald who I once met.

Well the main street certainly seemed to be more lively than the present day, Perhaps they should dispense with the mall

Hello, and thanks for the comment. The NFSA publishes films such as these to make them available for people to view based on the historical context in which they were produced. We have a lot of material in the Film Australia and the National Collections which involve First Nations people, culture and political content and we continue to actively seek and publish more First Nations content whenever we can. Nothing of the massacres, the rapes, the criminal persecution of the real owners of that land. It took me 50 years to learn of our shameless and shameful 'heritage''.
