    Show Notes:
    Obsessed with Personality
Raghu Markus introduces this Ram Dass dharma talk from 1993. Ram Dass begins the lecture by talking about how America is a country that seems to be obsessed with personality, which leads to pervasive feelings of victimization. He reflects on the growing awareness that straight materialism is not an identity with happiness.
“We got so busy being individual, ‘what do I need, what do I want,’ that we threw over a lot of the web, the framework - the extended family, the community - we threw it over in our zeal to be individual. And we ended up having to deal with a tremendous amount of pathology arising out of alienation.” - Ram Dass
    A Compassionate Society (17:38)
Ram Dass steps into the realm of 1990s government and politics, exploring how the newly elected Clinton administration needs involvement from spiritually-minded individuals, and how he senses the possibility that society can be compassionate. He looks back at the last time he felt this breath of change, the 1960s, and the cultural polarization that wound up occurring.
“I remember, we used to have charts on the wall, Tim Leary and I, as to how soon everybody would get enlightened. I mean, 10 years was like the maximum…” - Ram Dass
    Tools of Balance (37:21)
Ram Dass explores how things were different in the 1990s versus the 1960s, and how a more compassionate society will allow us to regain a sense of common good. He touches on honoring diversity, how change gives rise to fear, and embracing the paradox of life. Ram Dass ends with a powerful message about how we can all become instruments of balance in this world.
“If you get too focused on individual differences, you lose it. Because behind all the different faces is the One. If you only see the One and don’t see all the different faces, you lose it. If you only see the unity and don’t see the uniqueness, you miss the mark. What a challenge for us, to keep the balance, and to see our lives as instruments for bringing that balance back into the social fabric.” - Ram Dass

The problem with these kinds of Buddhist philosophies is trying to "relieve suffering" instead of actually providing comfort😊. By trying to relieve suffering you're increasing suffering; by dwelling🤺in the realm of "the word", "suffering". By providing "Comfort" to yourself & others the True Remedy is "NOW' implemented in the Universal Causal Realm.

I could literally play the first 10 seconds of Ram Das saying “be here now, just be here now” on loop and use that as my mediation music. When he says that my heart instantly calms down. I love it

Good community and wise teachers are enormously beneficial to be in the presence of so it’s good to have noticed that!
Can I ask if you’re drawn to any particular practices and/or traditions? And where abouts you’re based geographically?
With a sincere heart things will begin to fal into place for you anyway but I’m also happy to share what’s been helpful for me as well so far. 🙏🏼

Please end your association with Better Help. They are not an ethical company, it’s model is corpretizing therapy and is somewhat exploitative towards its therapists. This network really shouldn’t uphold any association with this company.

Oh Ram Dass this Gita is me, my stubbornness my victimization, this pandemic I know you for free but you are dead and you are more alive in me than ever before. You knew my teacher Trunpa. In the seventies I drove to Colorado because I wanted to go to Nalanda. I never got there. Instead I stayed on Staten Island with my family. But read Shambhala the sacred Path of the Warrior and thank you for being with me in this Pandemic as at 75 I want to just Love with compassion not fear. I cannot wait for March for the six week Gita course. May that help me put my feet in two places and Love with balance unafraid!

What a fantastic talk! Each time I feel like I found the one talk that really covers all of it for me, and it feels personal Al, and exactly as he just knows it is what I need to hear, balance, and merge into this part of my tribe; I go song and listen to another one that’s just as potent, true, intense, and funny for me.
It’s all working out for me and flowing for me as I go along down the river of this life. 😉🥰🙏🏽💜🙏🏽

That's still judging them.. they not only have good in them, but what they were and are doing is good. Because it pushes buttons in others, that makes them evolve.. sometime all takes to understand, is: "no pain, no gain".. at least until you've reached a certain point of consciousness and will to grow and accept it all.. and even then.. there will always be pain.. the time it takes to acknowledge and learn, evolve, shortens with time.. or another word for time is: experience turned into wisdom.. ❤

not one of his best talks to be honest. His Guru Maharaji tried to help him from being so judgemental but he couldn't help from time to time forgetting that he was not a doer and just an instrument of the devine. Lateness syndrome is an addiction to get things perfect before doing the next thing. Racing with a fridge on your back is still being an instrument of the devine but a judge will soon dismiss the case brought against the manufacturer. He couldn't resit making people laugh...which was his destiny of course. The personality is just a facet of this body mind organism and will continue to function after realisation. Sri Ramesh Balsekar. Ram Dass was a great teacher but not a great sage like his Guru Maharaji.
