Nice vid, good drills! I will use them in my gym. I learned to tuck my thumbs in while throwing elbows. They got stuck on clothing as well as were sprained on heads and equipment. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.
This is what I love about mma- every style has different techniques to prevent or counteract against or give more power over other strikes and grappling moves. The technique you were told isn't necessarily wrong since it might be meant for a specific tournament style or league. In the end you have to guess or know your opponents style and use the best technique for it. Like what couture once said, mma is like chess.
Good video! Been doing MT for almost 10 years and this is a quality lesson. I Also like how you have the HB hanging. I have a similar setup. Way better than hanging them from the rafters.
Thats a nice view. Elbows are underestimated in street fights like kicks. I see alot of street fights on youtube with amateurs using elbows. Done right like in this video and deadly!
i use finger jabs on the presure points. it usually slows my opponent and the n i pull the leg sweep and an elbow to the chest to knock the air out and incapacitate them
@yusofyahaya you can also throw a slicing elbow with less torque and more accuracy and speed and still devastate someone. theres a knockout elbow but there is also a quick slicing elbow that I find works great too
The power of the elbow comes not only from the swing of the elbow, but through the hip and the twist of the leg (plus the step took to strike). Elbow is very powerful strike if do it correctly.
@Jandro1083 same for me for my shotokan, we were always taught to hit THROUGH the opponent, like we're aiming our fist at their solar plexus, but we're actually trying to hit the area behind them.
@999berlo ser u r correct in that when my instructers teach us to build power and speed that would be almost the exact thing they would say there would be a rotation for almost every move to build the power
@USEejit Yes, it does. Touch the centre of you chest with the knuckles of your thumb as you rotate through your elbow. Then try while bending the wrist and placing the top of your hand to the centre of your chest. Notice how much more and how much easier that elbow comes around? Peace.
@womblewandering It's a bag drill where you consistently have to jab the bag without making it move, it's good for learning to bring your hand back quickly while generating just enough power so you can bring it back even faster.
@ragnorak642 for me based on experience plus in a actual street fight.. i really got to make room for me land my elbows ryt.. if your in a situation when you feel like every thing to cramp? then make some space.. plus you can move your hips even when you know theirs not much room to do so but it will affect your punches delivery during contact..
Agreed. i do both and ive tried other arts but them two just go together just right. Muay Thai is a good stand up style becuase its both straight forward and deadly and brazilian jui jitsu is a good ground/grappling style becuase it includes the effective throws found in judo with the effective submissions found in jui jitsu.
(assuming youre not southpaw) the left elbow is known as the cutting elbow and the right is known as the crushing. the left one is acceptable to scrape but the right should be delivered as if youre trying to hit a target 6 inches behind their head (obviously you hit their head but drive through)
@bloodletter55 you can still be effective with a slicing. glancing type of elbow. its like a knife. slice or a more powerful yet just as effective stab.
i feel this is a good video. many people dont stress enough on the step in. also, kids, remember to condition the elbow. use the iron palm techniques, it hink it's useful (atleast in my case, it was ).
GOOD ELBOWs The way i train is that i put the forearm(nearly said skin lol) out towards it first before turning it in any directions. Elbows are a good substitution for fist because fist can become sore after a while of punching.
muaythai does not break brick, board or what ever.no breaking competition,no shouting no ten against one but everyone loves to train as it is for yourself.gentle people.only smiles when you train.
@Sinantay elbow do work very well in close combat, but it is not harder than the fist...if you look at the fist you notice that has a greater area than your elbow, elbow concentrate all the force into one single are at the tip of your elbow. It's not just a knockout it can be deadly if hit at the right area. also with elbows you can't throw a punch in close combat you don't have enough of a drawback to deliver a good one and your non hitting elbow is your defensive guard
if you want to practice your elbows and condition, you can try something i do. Take old socks (if prosperity is on your side, get new ones :)) put one sock inside another and fill up with gravel to begin with. Hang it from the ceiling to any level you wanna throw elbows and punches. And just elbow away, the sock will move around like crazy try different elbows on it. You'll always be on the move. Also the gravel conditions your elbows gradually. U can move up the level later with ball bearings.
the meridians are the so called "nerv-knots" where a couple of nervous strings run together to join into a big one. theese points are extremelyvulnurable to strikes because if you hit them it will inflict immediate pain an if you are really good a loss of controll of the body parts connected to the knots.
@8tomy8 You either have a glass chin or a granate chin. The only way to find out which you have it to get hit HARD. There is no way to train knockout resistance you either got it or you don't.
The stance in tekken is batter suited for kicks. In thailand's fights, kicks score more than punches, that's why some people prefer shifting the weight to the back leg and the hands out in front. I mix things up. I do that stance when I'm kicking or checking kicks. When I punch, I have more of a boxing stance with the weight in the front leg.
Good video for beginners. Id like to see a more advanced tutorial which includes clinching and elbows. Ive fought some really capable Thai fighters and my MT technique is fairly poor. Id also like to see clinching defense and takedowns. That would be sweet. ;)
Yup, best to open your hand like a karate chop, point the finger tips to your setrnum on the swing, as this will increase the tip of the elbow. I know it sounds odd, but try it.
@askjeeves28 in boxing dipping and doging is ok because you dont have to watch for feet and knee's, muay thai has a more upright stance for that reason.
no matter what the style atleast we are exercising. No matter how good we are we are exercising at the end. The people that have a problem are those that dont do anything at all.
Leaning in so far like that in the reality of a fight situation leaves you too off balance if you miss and too wide open to recieve a counter strike, the way ive always learnt and practiced is by shuffling foward on your feet closing the distance with out losing stance and therfore maintaining balance without losing power.
thanks for that vid. i have NO background in muay thai but i think this basic knowledge may help me learn muay thai basics before i go to a muay thai school, or so i think. haha.
@Deadkira Absolutly!!! I'm a Muai thai practionner since 2 years now and i had no background at all in martial art.... I really like this sport cause it's pretty intense and hard!!!!! You have to try it!!!! It'shard at the beginning but after a couple month it become easier.....it's a lot of cardio.... Good luck!!!!
Yeah, elbows are definitely primarily a cutting weapon. You're actually supposed to connect with the pointed bone on the edge of your elbow. The thing I question in this video is where he stops the motion of the elbow. You should throw across the target to cut it. At least that was how I was taught at the Wat in NYC which is one of the top Muay Thai academies in the country, if not world. GSP flies from Canada once a month to train there as well as a host of other top-notch fighters.
I agree with Jii, i take Mauy thai but im not expecting for it to be the same as taking it in thailand. Fighters there start at a very early age and its considered their national sport. The best we can do is try and learn from them. The rest is watered down stuff.
i love th background music u use...perfect!
You Know music's name please ?
muay thai is probably the best martial art to bring to the streets. I have started learning and i can tell you that is useable
Some nice work there. I will try that drill, thanks!
Thanks for a great video. Informative and to the point. Good job.
Nice vid, good drills! I will use them in my gym. I learned to tuck my thumbs in while throwing elbows. They got stuck on clothing as well as were sprained on heads and equipment. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.
these are some really great vids...i'm going to try out muay thai over summer, and these help out a lot!
very nice drill. i've started working it into my heavy bag sessions. thank you!

I got to try this (both the filming angle and the elbow techniques).
Favorited!
Thats a nice view. Elbows are underestimated in street fights like kicks. I see alot of street fights on youtube with amateurs using elbows. Done right like in this video and deadly!
@bloodletter55 In other words, ur saying the force pierces through?
Well done, thx for the excellent vid and instruction
salesman or not, the dude is right!!! Great vid for amateurs! thanks for showing mate
i use finger jabs on the presure points. it usually slows my opponent and the n i pull the leg sweep and an elbow to the chest to knock the air out and incapacitate them
can some one tell me what are does thing call that u trow in the floor and start punching it or elbowing it
Seriously, Thanks for the awesome vid.
@ExileHorror You have to follow through with it so yeah you have to move your right leg with a spinning elbow and vice versa if your a lefty.
Awesome tut for beginners.
@yusofyahaya you can also throw a slicing elbow with less torque and more accuracy and speed and still devastate someone. theres a knockout elbow but there is also a quick slicing elbow that I find works great too
Hi! I was just wondering if you could post some video on some punching, elbow, kick and knee drills.
Thank you, greatly appreciated it
Jackie
does microfracture helps to strengthen elbows like it does for shins?
The power of the elbow comes not only from the swing of the elbow, but through the hip and the twist of the leg (plus the step took to strike). Elbow is very powerful strike if do it correctly.
not bad and good job well done!

@bloodletter55 can you explain what you mean by through the target and not at them i need some tips.
i feel you its much diffrerent when someone is trying to fight back the same or just charging you like a grabbler or something
@USEejit it does. but just try do it in a boxing glow. if u bend ur wrist ur elbow can go fader.
@TheEpicFailMan
Muay thai is the best and most brutal art. I do it and love it.
Thanks for the help!
@womblewandering It's a bag drill where you consistently have to jab the bag without making it move, it's good for learning to bring your hand back quickly while generating just enough power so you can bring it back even faster.
Every fighting style got it pros and cons.
me too..these videos are very useful
@TradingWoWaccount
Why would your trainer smacjk you if the bag moves? If it moves, it shows power right? So thats a good thing isnt it?
@ragnorak642 for me based on experience plus in a actual street fight..
i really got to make room for me land my elbows ryt.. if your in a situation when you feel like every thing to cramp? then make some space.. plus you can move your hips even when you know theirs not much room to do so but it will affect your punches delivery during contact..
@iApna I agree,I was never really fond of snapping them either. But I like this guys stuff too.
great vid!

@handpratze good point
Is this video for boxers who take ectasy?
wat i wana know is how do u devlop dos sharp elbows lik kenny florian?
@Tommynatorium what i have written? i dont remember and cant find that comment
esse cara é boom
@elcarita2010 definitely, the stance is so much better in MT for one and the elbows and knees are deadly in street situations.
hello , i would really like to know about the song name please
if you missed the elbow and had your wrist bent pressed against your chest and the opponent punched it would that not break your wrist?
legend!

Well said!

@9N8X Yeah I agree. Muay thati's the bomb

"or u will needlessly scrap off the skin" lmao funniest shit ive heard all week
I agree.
Yup, best to open your hand like a karate chop, point the finger tips to your setrnum on the swing, as this will increase the tip of the elbow. I know it sounds odd, but try it.
@YMthefirst in other martial arts was less practice elbow but muay thai is primary upper body strike...
i like the roundhouse elbow
amazing music!!....NAME???
This video is so cool, I gonna practice it, just to learn to use my elbows in a devastating way. :P
nice vid...
@askjeeves28 in boxing dipping and doging is ok because you dont have to watch for feet and knee's, muay thai has a more upright stance for that reason.

@TAC412
I know, thanks. I train at Fairtex in SF
good video
Leaning in so far like that in the reality of a fight situation leaves you too off balance if you miss and too wide open to recieve a counter strike, the way ive always learnt and practiced is by shuffling foward on your feet closing the distance with out losing stance and therfore maintaining balance without losing power.

what are finger jabs? i've never learnt em. lol kinda confusing cause you do wear gloves right
@9N8X yeah, keep thinking that, pal :)
Does anyone know the name of the strike at 4:01?
Right now i'm in da livin' room practisin' dis shit !
