Mandatory comment: Zeff originally didnt cut his leg while diving. He still had it in the rock where they were stranded. He gave all the food to Sanji and then he didnt have it anymore The animators couldn't even imply too much the cannibalism part The reason the original works better is, not only its more shocking and kinda explains why Zeff didn’t starve, but him cutting his leg was a conscious decision: he didnt cut an arm, he knew he wouldn't be able to fight properly anymore, he knew his life as a pirate was over. But he and later Sanji TREASURE their arms because that's what allows them to be cooks, which is more important than fighting or even their lives
@@earthatlantis I believe that anime in general, with great voice acting and good soundtracks has the potential to heighten emotional impacts, and the One Piece anime does it extremely well. Props to Toei in these aspects. But the pacing can be atrocious, it even changes how we perceive certain scenes. If a contest of strenght takes a single page in the manga but takes 4 minutes in the anime, in the manga we have the feeling it wasn't much of a challenge while in the anime it makes it feel like it was an even match (im thinking about chapter 916 versus episode 903 for example, but its one of many). When you read the One Piece manga from the beginning it's such a great experience, there's so much content and the story flows without having to look at extra #7363838816 's shocked face for the 36th time (like in a certain competition with lucy) And i do think they went a little overboard with certain aspects of the animation to the point it's a little detrimental I'm a strong believer that OP is a better manga than it is an anime (at least Toei'sversion). It's not bad, it's one of the best, but the manga is a better manga than the anime is a good anime. It could've been so much better. But i suppose not everyone is used to consuming manga and being able to read and connect to what is written. Every emotional moment hit me like a truck and had me bawling my eyes out with the manga. The anime does too, but the manga alone doesn’t fall behind at all, and it's the goat for a reason But you're totally right, we will never stop the tears, Oda wont let us lol
@@RapidmangoReactsOne piece has the best main characters but same goes for side characters. Side characters have the best backstories in this anime unlike others.
A cool manga detail that was sadly left out in the anime is that Zeff beat up one of his men when he caught him stealing food from the cruise ship they attacked. As a pirate he was there to steal money but he wasn't going to risk those people starving.
Keep those tissues close and well-stocked, you'll need them several times over the next 1100 episodes. Dreams are _so_ important in One Piece. They're everything.
Keep the box of tissues close! One Piece will warm your heart but also break it 😭This beautiful series has made me cry buckets of tears. I recently found your channel, and I love your genuine reactions and commentary. It feels like I’m rewatching the show with two friends. I’ve been a fan of One Piece since I was 17 (I’m 31 now), and it has brought me so much warmth and joy over the years. Seeing new fans embark on the adventure and fall in love with the storytelling and Strawhat crew makes me so happy. I adore those goofy pirates so much! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Looking forward to more of your reactions ❤️
There's a clear message sent by Oda with all this tragedies. You might have had a trauma but is the decisions you make that will write your story, not the past you left behind.
*sees the title* what are you talking about? We are still in the relatively happy backstories. By the way you'll hear this a million times but in the manga Zeff ate his leg but the anime censored it
Zeff was definitely holding back when he kicked Sanji as a kid, not that he didn't send him flying but his full strength kicks dented iron hulls on warships, he could have killed him if that was his intent.
As some people have already stated the anime is slightly different from the manga 1 they were on the rock wayy longer 50 days. In the manga it was 85 days And as for zeffs leg he didn't lose it in the sea. He broke/cut it off with a rock and then ate it
Zeff was so hyperfocused on Luffy because he wants Sanji to realize that he has that same stupid undying resolve as Luffy, and it's that resolve that is holding Sanji back from taking initiative of his own destiny. Zeff is basically trying to make him look into a mirror because he's tired of Sanji constantly holding himself back for him.
Luffy has no fear of dying and he has very strong determination. Don Krieg does not have Devil Fruit powers, he's just physically strong and has a ton of weapons and armor.
Yup tragic indeed, and the reality is even worse ... the anime did not want to show the real story from the manga, Zeff cut off his leg to eat it, not to save Sanji during the storm
@@Shurororu Yes we did! We will release them between episodes 46 and 47 for the anime I believe. Between East Blue and the next arc. They will be on our Patreon early within the next week though if you want to check them out sooner!
That's one of the best things about One Piece: when you get a backstory it's sure to be one of the highlights of the arc! Small translation note on Sanji's speech pattern: he uses "shit" as a modifier the way English speakers use "fuck", but the translation went with "damn" instead. In English it doesn't really work with "shit geezer", "shit restaurant", "shit cooks" and so on, I guess? But I think the fact that Sanji has a rather rough speech pattern and swears a lot is a little obscured because of this choice.
I love that you are already perceiving that you need tissues whenever we go into a backstory, and you did so during the happiest part of Sanji childhood
It's unfortunate how much less impactful the anime version of Zeff's and Sanji's story is. In the anime he was going to drown either way if he didn't cut off his leg so saving Sanji was barely even a sacrifice. On the other hand giving Sanji all the food and then smashing his leg off with a rock to eat it to survive like he did in the manga is an insane sacrifice to make for someone, especially a stranger.
I suppose that everyone already told you that in the original story, Zeff ate his leg instead of cutting it under water, but it was too graphic for animation (We don't see him eating it, but we see him breaking his leg with a rock). I have an other anecdote related to your title. Netflix did a live action of One Piece, and Oda said that he accepted it because when he talked to the producers, he asked "Why do you like One Piece" and the realisator responded "I like that every character have an horrible story, but that it doesn't matter on how they see the world and how much they want to achieve their dreams." So yes, all the mains characters are like that, a big dream, an horrible event and then the chase of their dreams
I think looking at the increase viewers on the channel you can tell that the fanbase for one piece comes out of the wood works. Unlike other animes which has seasonal fans when it first launched to the point in which it ends, one-piece fanbase continue to increase day by day. Though, "only time will tell if it's for the better, or for the worst":
its pretty simple. Oda is the ancient god of suffering. his domain the sea. his element salt water. your tears a tribut to his eternal realm. it has only just begun, stock up on tissues you will need them. :D
