    I picked up my i4 M50 on Wednesday, and I absolutely love it. You're right that it's not strictly an M car, but BMW has obviously been more liberal lately with where they put the M badge. I've test-driven Teslas and I owned a Mach E for a year (just sold it); I can safely say that the i4 beats them both in terms of cabin comfort, driving dynamics, material quality, and exterior design. The main thing the i4 loses on is rear seat room.

      This is the same kind of M light car like the M440i. Don’t think BMW ever claimed it to be a full M like a M3 or M4. Not sure why reviewers always try to make that claim. My M50 is on a boat right now, can’t wait.

    Hey MotoMan,
    I have been wondering about this question and think it could be a great future video by you. With the future being EV’s and the fact that they are considerably heavier than their ICE counterparts what have the major tire manufacturers been doing so that their tires can take that extra weight and still provide performance, comfort, safety and acceptable tire life? Even EV’s of the future will still only have 4 wheels to carry all of that extra weight.
    Thanks as always.

    Great review - BMW is on to something but they are not there yet. The iX is a great car too - best EV on its class for now, the i4 packaging is ICE born, but still a great car which I would drive as a day to day car, maybe will. The problem is as you show in the reviews - weight. I expect the over next generations of batteries to be much lighters, like solid - state with half the weight, higher energy density which would be the formular for car enthusiasts cars, real M / RS cars.

    Great review as always MM. I really like this. I didn’t think I would, but it looks like it handles better than any Tesla and the only thing that handles better is a Porsche Taycan. I’m fine dailying a budget Taycan. As someone else already stated though, if you don’t need AWD, the i4 40 RWD is probably the way to go. As for the discussion on where these rare earth minerals are sourced, I would absolutely like to have a discussion about this. Handling? Not a chance. I’ve had both cars on the track and the i4 M50 hands-down down out handles the Tesla. The i4 is a 4 series that is retrofitted to be electric. It is sooooooo heavy compared to a purposebuilt Tesla model 3. Looks comfort and luxury materials, the BMW is of course much better. Space in the backseat is almost a joke, and the ridicioulus long bonnet with zero luggage space just shows what a retrofitted ICE car it is. Personally, I'd love to hear more about the sourcing of raw materials for battery packs and EV motors. I know you live in California.
    I keep on hearing more and more about lithium extraction from the geothermal brines in Southern California. I'd love to hear more about that.
    You regularly touch on your background in technology. Companies like Real Graphene are developing a super energy-dense battery technology with is useful for wireless devices. From what I heard, it's way too expensive to put into electric vehicles, for now, at least.
    I'm curious to know how realistic technology like that is for applications like drones, power tools, electric yard equipment, etc.
    On the topic of you having a background in tech from your time at Apple, why is Apple bothering to build its own EV when it could literally buy 50.1% of the equity in Mitsubishi? Or, even Mazda?

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question on that last point . . . however, if I were to take a stab at an answer: Apple has always been 'homegrown' in the 'fix, sell or buy' decision. Yes, they have made acquisitions along the way but only for behind the scenes technology. The brand is EVERYTHING to Apple because at its core, it is still a cult. This is why an established OEM is not of interest.

    Nice review with super incredible features on this car. However, very disappointed that A reviewer of your caliber doesn’t recognize that there is a new world of “M” out there. It’s important to stop comparing EV’s to ICE’s. This is an “EV” M with incredible handling mind blowing launch speed and torque. It has incredible styling luxurious finishes And really deserves kudos for BMW‘s “M Machine” to design, tweak and refine a super powerful “ wild thing“ machine into a true EV. There are variations of BMWs electric vehicles but only one M EV M50. Maybe there will be more EV M’s in the future but right now this is groundbreaking for the EV world. No disrespect, but It’s time to recognize and respect change. Otherwise we’ll all be driving Ugly egg shaped AMC Pacer EV‘s that just “Go Fast”.

      The BMW CEO said in a statement that the true/real M cars are going to be reserved for the ICE cars. The EVs are all going to be M “lites” and not a full-fledged M car (regardless of 40, 50, or 60). This is what it will be like in the foreseeable future.

    Just as a follow-up it’s nice to see personal opinion in the comments here but many failed to recognize “personal opinion“ is just that “personal“. As a review this vehicle is a true M-EV. By saying “I would never get one“ or “I would much prefer an M440” it’s not what we are discussing here. I think it’s important that we all recognize change and BMW has brought it in the form of the first M EV. No doubt there will be refinements and upgrades in the future but nonetheless one has to recognize this for what it is. A snarling super fast incredibly handling vehicle with awesome braking capability tight steering and a 50-50 balance with a much lower center of gravity… If you would like to compare it, compare it to other EV‘s. My personal opinion is do you really want to just be one of the other drivers of an egg shaped iPad?

They've been making ICE cars with the "M" label slapped on them for years now. The BMW m440 that this car shares a platform with isnt a true "M" car either lol. Not sure why reviewers are upset that this model specifically getting slapped with "m" badges on it hwne it's become a treng throughout the industry with BMW/Audi/Benz to slap on an "M/AMG/S" badge on many cars

    Not a fan of the exterior and would’ve been better if the boost did a little more boosting. We’re far from tracking these heavy weights so a gear may not be as helpful with limited public roadways. The wheel size is a HUGE factor in efficiency and possibly in picking out the sweet spot for acceleration. Bravo that BMW for making that elephant dance instead of lumber about and only do straight lines well. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Is it a M5 CS? No but then again what is?

    Kudos to BMW for at least caring about the sourcing of the cobalt and lithium……BUT….the fallacy of BEV’s of all types is that the entire battery supply chain (mining, trucking of materials to train, train, ship, etc.) is powered by diesel. And most of the GHG and particulate matter emissions associated with that are not inventoried because they occur in foreign counties and international waters. Furthermore, most BEV’s are plugged in at night after work when the power grid is almost entirely powered by fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas. The future, my friends, is hydrogen. Green hydrogen can be produced anywhere and used in ICE’s as well as fuel cells. I honestly feel we are wasting our time by building out the EV charging infrastructure. Luckily someone in the DOE seems to get it, with the Hydrogen Shot Initiative that challenges developers to get green hydrogen down to $1 per kg. Musk sees the writing on the wall too, as he’s doing everything he can to bash hydrogen at every opportunity.

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hydrogen is lovely but after hearing 'it is 5 years away' for the past 13 years, cannot agree it is the future. Sadly, political will is required to make it happen. Brussels and Washington have none for Hydrogen. They bought the EV is everything fallacy and it will bite them in the ass which will result in governments and OEMs pushing off their EV mandates until the entire world can 'get the EV boat closer to the dock'.

    • @gkacvinsky
      @gkacvinsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the automotive industry has already decided that hydrogen is *not* the future, given the massive investment in battery tech. However, hydrogen may play a role in freight (long-haul trucks), given the difficulty in adding so much battery weight to the trucks.
      Even with the obvious environmental impact of mining and cobalt/lithium extraction, battery tech is evolving to the point where energy density is going up (and therefore the amount of raw materials per battery is going down). Additionally, as the current generation of EVs begin to retire their batteries, those materials will, no doubt, be recycled.
      Regarding renewables and overnight charging, don't forget that wind generation (which is a big part of the renewable portfolio) still works at night, as does nuclear and hydropower. When I plug in at night, a large percentage of my electrons still come from renewables. I don't think it's fair to say that the overnight electricity comes mostly from fossil fuels, because that's just not true.
