Remember, the guy doing this is 6'10". He's not supposed to be as fast or quick as a guard. Jokic is a fine player with a lot of the same attributes, but he could never move nor run like LB. Mike tried to guard Larry on multiple occasions. He was simply too small. Bird is one the the greatest post players ever. There's a vid out there that shows his entire post up back to the basket bag, and it was as diverse as his passing; he was missing nothing inside. He just took MJ down to the post and scored over him. After a handful of these plays, they took Mike off of Larry very quickly. The thing is, LB could take his defender anywhere on the court where that player was uncomfortable defending.

    • @Alice-xy3fi

Plus...the players compared to Bird, like Jokic, and even players not compared to his game, like LeBron, are all students of the game, and learned from Bird. LeBron has said as much-- and when asked in an interview to name his top three of all time, he not only named Bird, but said his name first.

    About the full court passes
The reason it seems like they dont prep against the full court passes is that, in a lot of cases, bird would do it strategically in moments where the team celebrated their own shot. He would notice them turning to high five each other, run out of bounds and chuck it down field before the other guys were even done high fiving. It was a double gut punch to the morale

Style over substance. Even when people know their shit like these two seem to, I mean they're going from one mouth gape to the other and barely got time to process the ridiculous pass Bird just gave...but there's always this reluctance to shout from the rooftops how fucking amazing Larry Bird is. It's always 'well, ok, MAYBE I'll give him that one...but but but he's still not the goat'... Like what more do you need. It's like people can't comprehend the idea of nominating or defending (to their friends?) a goat that DOESN'T look like the baddest of the badasses, even when he's playing the best ball you'll ever witness in every metric that matters. He averaged 10 rebounds so many of his assists were touch passes off a rebound. If people say Larry's the greatest passer of all time, I'm OK with that. I still say Magic is the greatest, but that's partly because of his greater than 11 assists per game. Stockton can also be called the greatest. Lebron, Maravich, Nash, too. But Larry is one of the few candidates to rival Magic.

The same goes for players falling when guarding him-- or trying to guard him. The reactors laugh at these NBA greats because they see the defenders as lame, when it wasn't their lameness-- they were not only NBA, but often HOF-- it was that he was unguardable because whatever they did, he'd take advantage of. His court awareness is so high that he knew right where to drop that lob to get it into the hands of his teammate. It was another one of his "I just can't believe it" moves, like when he sunk the all-net basket from behind the backboard. Believe it.😂

Bird didnt do that. he made passes on the move, he made full court passses, touch passes, insane reaction and awareness by this man.. i'll say he is the best passer that is NOT a pg. Lebron and Luka play point and control the ball. Maybe Jokic tho, from that post, but not on the move passes like Bird.

Today’s players have a easier time passing because the game is so gentle today, back in Bird’s era it was a rough physical game with holding jerseys, throwing elbows locking players up and notice most Larry’s passes were while he was in a hard doubled teamed. Larry would be in a shooting position but feed his teammates instead in order to get them in the game, he was unselfish and didn’t think about individual success but a team win.

You guys should edit a special video about Bird & DJ's "eye-contact" passing game. It was very crazy. I always watched that videos several times and thought of how great the 80s NBA games were. When DJ dribbled the ball to back court, he always looked Larry's motion. If Larry used the screen or cut through into the basket, and the guy who guarded LB couldn't follow with, DJ would pass the ball from very long distance, about 2 or 3 feets of the 3-pts line!! 😂😂😂

Magic looked flashier because of the way his team played, and was the best fast break passer. Bird was I think better both in the half court, and as you said, out of bounds. Bird's passing always looked more effortless, regardless of the degree of difficulty. Also, Bird, as a much better shooter and scorer than Magic, integrated his passing into his game in a different, very impactful way.

Also, I believe if you continue to watch Bird's passing in various tapes, and see his unerring precision (as your brother already commented on), the way he threads the needle, the way he doesn't sacrifice accuracy with his lightning-fast releases, you may change your mind from thinking he was aiming for the basket rather than passing, as he successfully did (around 7:30).
