It's crazy how much Nirvana did in that short-lived but very impactful period of their prime. Their impact after Smells like Teen Spirit was so strong that 3 years solidly feel like 10. It's insane how their impact changed the course of music forever. Many people don't realise that Nirvana's prime in the mainstream lasted for about 3-4 years only. I recall many people discovered Nirvana's earlier songs after Kurt died - coming from the mainstream level, not from the alternative or underground Seattle circles of course, as they were pretty established there already.
Symbolically, I believe, that Kurt Cobain's early, tragic passing was a result of Nirvana's accelerating prime that followed with a very strong impact on music and the world forever. It was a star doomed to explode. The world impatiently wanted too much from him, too soon and too quickly. Kurt's death was the price for that impact.
Nirvana, apart from being a great grunge band, carried sort of a heroic, philosophical role to people as well. It's hard to forget that.

It’s always sad to watch the performances from 93/94 with Pat Smear in a way. You can tell he had so much excitement to be touring and playing with Nirvana. Kurt on the other hand was 4 years in and he’s already ready to end it…The excitement he had when he played Teen Spirit for the first time on MTV just isn’t there anymore unfortunately, and heroine had it’s grip on him bad at this point and you can tell he was at the end of his rope….it’s so tragic.

With kurt it’s very strange because it’s not entirely unwanted attention, imo he craved attention as a child due to the lack of security and stability in his family/home. In a few books about nirvana it says more about this type of thing, but obviously it all got out of hand for him. But heavier than heaven, the storyteller, and everybody loves our town are interesting for this.

All he needed was a prescription for Suboxone, a cottage in the woods where he could be alone and paint, a few ounces of weed and like a year off … no performing, no practicing, and no need to write music. No pressure, in other words. Just do with your days as you see fit.

Maybe it’s just me but as much as I love nirvana, like they are legit one of my favorite bands, Kurt always looks somewhat fucked up no matter it’s the first show or the last. Dude was a heroin addict - let’s get real. I know the whole conspiracies or whatever, but from the first to the last performance, the guy was probably always dealing with something dark or difficult on the inside.
