For someone that has a bit of a reputation for being a bit on the cold and aloof side, this was pretty vulnerable for Fripp. I've never seen anything like it for him.
Tough to watch, but a lovely memorial. Wetton/Fripp was the most powerful bass/guitar lineup in music history. They brought something forth that was utterly unique and powerful.
Robert is really one old-fashioned English gentleman. So classy, touching and moving speech. John Wetton was an unique musician with warm, special voice. A True Crimson Knight.
My favorite King Crimson lineup was/is with John Wetton the live material 1972-74 incredible! Thank you Mr. Fripp for releasing a number of those fabulous recordings!
We were there that day thank you!! Was amazing also anniversary of RED one of my all time favorite albums.. Wetton bass n voice, spirit sublime.. My father 67 just passed of cancer a month ago after a year fighting it, total medical racket for auto worker during covid era.. Still have my dad's album copy of In the Court of the Crimson King.. Have been keeping in mind Toyah's words on suffering and missing loved ones.. This was a deep talk looking forward to seeing more snippets.. You all were really tested by some drunk bikers next to us, bouncers were around everyone waiting for something to happen.. Practice
Night Watch, Book of Saturday, Starless, these seized me from first listen and have never lost any of their magic throughout every phase of my life since I first obsessed over anything by or about KC as a child in the late 80s. John Wetton's voice, man, that rich, warm, sorrowful voice.
I was so lucky to watch him live with Asia in 2011. I still can fathom how lucky I was to watch Wetton, Chrish Squire and Alan White that night. I'm very touched by Mr. Fripp's tribute to a departed colleague. These ephemeral partnerships leave such a mark in all of us. I wished these partnerships and collaborations repeated again and again, as a re-meeting of the minds, like it happened to both Fripp and Wetton in the latter years.
Mr. Fripp - what an enigma. Deeply feeling, deeply spiritual, wonderfully sentimental - and at other times horrid, harsh, brutally confrontational. Tormented complicated spirit, and one of the greatest artists ever to manipulate six strings.
Thank you for releasing this video. I absolutely loved the King Crimson lineup with John Wetton. John and Bill Bruford together were magical. The music on these King Crimson records and live performances was nothing short of astounding to me. Roberts comments here are breathtaking and beautiful.
And don’t forget the Bruford/Wetton combination in UK. Another incredible progressive band with the addition of Alan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson. Their first album is in the top of my favorite album list along with Larks Tongue/Starless & Bible Black and Red.
I love all the iterations of Crimson, and all the many musicians who have been part of it--shout out to the totally forgotten Andrew McCullough!--but Lake and Wetton were literally the voice of King Crimson.

I went to a screening of the documentary at SXSW with a Q&A at the end, and the documentary didn't even mention Wetton a single time, and nobody asked anything about him. It really troubled me. He has always been my favorite frontman for KC, and the era with him has always been my favorite. Fripp's take here was beautiful, and I'm glad he still holds him in high regard.
my thoughts exactly about the documentary... i think that the movie would turn out way better if the director had a likening for king crimson prior to making the film
"Starless" is the greatest tribute ever to a musician. The bass-playing is perfection itself and no-one will ever sing it like John. I want to be listening to it when I die. I love how Robert has stayed true to his roots. His Dorset accent is so soothing.
And they could knock a hockey rink off it's foundation and send it rolling off down the road....bless you and thank you for your beautiful commentary about those magical days....all of them magical right up to now and forever.
Ever heard Starless demo sung by John Wetton playing the piano all on his own? You should seek it out because John Wrote that song himself note for note. John Wetton wasn't just a bass player/singer he was a very talented musician and lyrisist who also played piano, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar and he could even play the violin. A talented multi-instrumentalist but his greatest talent was his lyrics. All his work is steaped in Christian faith. You'll find this in all his recorded work. Listen to "Bury Me In Willow" from Asia's XXX Album and you'll know what I mean.. They'll never be another John Wetton but there is an Asteroid named after him "Asteroid 72802 Wetton" which will shine in the cosmos for ever.

I’m in the club who says that John was the epitome of prog male vocalists. He’s so easily identifiable.

Wetton got me into bass. Truly a set of monster fingers, and a lovely raspy voice too.
His bass work on the 73-74 era tours (particulary the improvs) are some of the most powerful bass work I have ever heard.

It's surprising that Robert remembers John Wetton as the only bass player like Jaco for him, and I'm saddened to say goodbye to him so much.
