Had my first whitebait 1990 somewhere between Westport and Greymouth. A big party of several families.
The men fishing and preparing on the plate. The fish slice in the one hand...in the other a can of Steinlager or XXXX. They all gave me warmth and soon I was apart of their party.
Me fool being shy and not taking my Olympus to take a few shots....
Thanks a lot for bringing back memories! Every vid of you bursts for me of love to people and photography. A huge sparkler of joy and inspiration. All about photography and NZ. Wonderful.

Wonderful choice of a camera. As a kid in high school I had an English teacher that was also a portrait photographer. I still remember helping out as we took that years yearbook portraits and senior pictures on a Kowa Six. That was 1983 and years later I was offered the camera with 2 lenses for a steal of a price. Over 15 years later and I still kick myself for not buying the camera.

Kowa Super 66 was a "good" camera. Like several mentioned, it had it's faults but a lot of wedding photographers loved being able to get into the larger negative for a reasonable price. It had a heck of a mirror drop, no interchangeable backs and only a minimum number of lenses. I had one for a few years, moved up to a very used Hassiblad and eventually went on to several view cameras. BUT in defense of the old Super 66, it was very good for teaching composition and if you shot on a tripod, locked up the mirror and were careful, you could produce some very respectable negatives. Can't say I would buy one again, but in it's' day it was a pretty respectable camera.

I love medium format cameras and have several. Kiev 6c with a 90mm 2.8 lens and the waist level and eyelevel ttl prism. Awesome glass.
My favourites are tlrs. I have a Chinese Seagull 4bi twin lens reflex with a 75mm 3.5 lens and a Japanese Yashica mat with a 75mm 3.5 Lumaxar lens from 1957. The lens is SOOO SHARP.
I like the tlrs because they are so compact and light.
The Kiev 6c is best with the waistlevel finder.
I remember the Kowa but had never seen one.
If it's a Copal shutter then it will be really good and easy to work on.

I picked one of these up on a whim at a flea market about 8 years ago, and it got me hooked on film photography. Of my collection, it’s still my favorite. If you’re gentle with the advance knob it will last you a long time. Don’t flip the little crank out, just turn the wheel - that’s the trick I’ve heard;)

Shooters that only know digital post production are unaware of color filters for Black and white. They (filters) create quite a dramatic contrast of light and dark shades, and one can find the filters in the discount bin at your local camera shop. Pre production vs post. Front of the cow vs back end. Especially B&W. On another note, off hand, foreknowledge in either medium makes the out come more predictable, but with film the trade off (less post options) is more rewarding when you nail it. Thanks again.

I noticed you didn't seem to use an exposure meeter.., which may have improved your results. I still have one of these and it still works after 50+ years. It ia stored in an aluminum case when not in use. Good luck with continued experimenting with the KOWA SIX.., I love mine.

videos like this make me really feel tempted to go back to darkroom work... built my own at the age of 20, dragged the selfmade table (that lived its 1st life as a ...door) with sink & I don't know what else from home to home, for I think18 years or so...some real nice photo's there Paul, I like in particular the one with the fisherman in the front and others in the background, with all the poles splitting the image in a 45degree angle...that's composing! Got here because I couldn't find any info on those Kowa's... the lens quality seems quite promising, very tempted to try out one! cheers & keep up the good work!

My first view to a SLR was I think a Kowa 35mm. I was entranced! The smaller Kowa was not a good camera. Too complicated. The Kowa 6 by all accounts quite good in every way! I hope still working, if not sold! Great video. The Photos seem super. The joy of 6x6 one can make duplicate contacts or larger on printer and share! My Canoscan lacks the 120 film holder, rats! All the best, Bravo.

  • @iainmc9859

I'm pretty much the same over cheap film point and shoots, its just the does it work and can I get it to work thing. Cheap SLRs are getting rarer, even if you have your ear to the ground.
I predict the next big up-pricing will be in digital point and shoots, which are everywhere at the moment as phone cameras have bypassed them but nostalgia value and rarity will kick in in about 10 years time. Of course the first digital camera's (the ones with floppy discs) now make a fortune, the price of a good DSLR. Have fond memories of my first digital brick, which still resides in a box in the boiler cupboard.
Nice shots, it definitely looks like a good portrait camera, very solid blacks with a lot of fall-off in the midtones (maybe its just the film or the strong light on the beach).

Like yourself I think analogue and digital can co-exist, and I often say that my favourite camera, my Zorki 4K is also my cheapest. I also develop all my own images and darkroom print my 35mm black and white images, I have to scan my 120 and all colour. For me the darkroom is my favourite part of any photography, I can spend hours in there messing around with proper dodging and burning etc.
I’ve never quite understood the digital v analogue arguments where people are expected to fall into one camp or the other. I always thought photography was about choices, not dictums. People should be encouraged to enjoy their photography however they choose practice it, not slated for not having the latest kit.
You find such fascinating subjects for your photography and all your videos have other educational aspects to them. We have whitebait in the UK, and even though I’m a chef by trade I don’t know if we have a defined season.
As always a superb vlog Paul with some great shots, I really enjoyed it. A wise man once told me that if you wanted to judge a man's character watch how he treats his dog.

For anyone seriously interested in taking up a Kowa 6 (or Kowa 66, or Super 66), they are fairly simple cameras as medium format SLRs go. Never a commercial competitor to Hasselblad, Bronica, etc., the bodies were updated and refined over the years. Kowa made a full range of very good lenses for the system, as well as numerous accessories to make it more useful. Problem now is that if you want a full system, some lenses and accessories can for hard to find. Lack of knowledge and parts makes finding repairs a problem. I seriously considered buying in many years ago, but went with Pentax 67 instead.

I recall when the original Kowa Six appeared on the market back in the day. The photo magazines of the time took it to task for so-so optical quality, noise/vibration, and lack of an interchangeable film back. I was tempted, and ran a roll of Verichrome Pan through one and scrutinized the negatives and prints. The result? I went back to the Minolta Autocord and waited for camera manufacturers to come up with something "inexpensive and sharp." While later Kowa Six models addressed the mechanical problems of the original, I eventually chose a Bronica ETR-C outfit. (I'm a "rectangular" sort, though 6X6 has it over the 24X36mm format any day.) Would I buy an eBay Kowa Six today? A Six MM, possibly.

Paul C Smith Photographer thanks! No Need to Talk about Detaild Technical specs! just Show us how to load film, your shooting routine and unload Film would be already super helpful for quite a few people out there.

Found your video when a Kowa Super 66 around me is for sale for a reasonable price.
Thought it is a bit bulky to carry for outdoor works but you obviously took some good pictures with it.
Which lens do you use with this camera?

I took my Kiev 88 out a few months ago with some old, very old 120 B&W, half the film was bad but I got 4 nice pictures... then I think of the cost for the 4 pic's... I will stay with my Canon T's and my Sigma SD 9. Film and old camera's are fun but I think they will stay in the box's.. They had there time.... it's time to move on, wonder what's next ?

@@yasha8951 , But I'm sure you have looked at the price of film.. look at 4X5's OMG and then there is chemicals ! I will stick with new tech.

Nice video but I had a heck of a time trying to decipher what he said. English is much different in the Colonies (USA).

I have worked with M 645; RB 67 Pro SD, Hasselblad 500 CM, Rolleiflex SL 66, I don't know what film you used here, but the grain is not exaptable for a medium size camera. It's not about vintage, to me it is about sharpness and that did not impress me. If it was on purpose, let me know, plus you should name the film that you use, 800 Ilford????? I find the movie very interesting however, rated it postive, much to learn from.
