    watching this movie makes me appreciate nolan's trilogy even more. although he created original stories for the movies, he was able to weave in many of the themes and story lines from actual source material. I'm usually not a nerd about loose adaptations, but it's pretty cool when the adaptation sticks very close to the original.

    • @MoshTMA
      @MoshTMA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd imagine it was to fool Sal into suspecting the Roman, to motivate Sal into killing Carmine over Luigi. Instead Sal suspects Harvey Dent, so Gilda's plan backfires and she creates Two Face indirectly who then does kill Roman. Of course the flaw in the film is that if revenge against the Roman was the bottom line why was she hesitant to kill him herself directly, and why wait so long to do it?

    Didn't completely love all the changes, specifically Batman just letting a serial killer go. Sorry, would never happen. It also closes a few holes in the original story while opening a few new ones. What I didn't realize on first viewing is that Gilda lied to Batman. Because we SAW the Holiday killer as a man several times. Which means harvey Dent was also Holiday, which never made sense in the original comics (the timeline was wonky there). Him killing Alberto out of Jealousy, and for his role in making Gilda barren makes sense as well. We simply cannot be expected to believe that Gilda is the only Holiday Killer, she can't be.

    Both part 1 and 2 were great! I loved how Batman felt very much at the start of his career (getting bested/called out by even some of his c level rogues) which still being extremely competent.
    My only complaint is the portrayal of Selina Kyle/Catwoman, which may be unfair given that Rivera passed away. But that never once felt like Selina Kyle. Ackles’ voice work as Bruce Wayne was also distracting, but not as much.

      I never read the comic, but it still doesn't make any sense to me how Gilda was able to carry out the assassination so flawlessly, like she was able to kill all the guys during the Thanksgiving dinner without any problem. Also Holiday was built like a man and there were many times we got to see the face closed up that looks nothing like her.

    • @miguelaranda7727
      @miguelaranda7727 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@ryantheanimator1156 I agree with you, the movie is great but the killer model made it physically impossible for Gilda to match. I would have to add that for an unknown reason Batman let her off the hook, we see a Batman with a gray path since Harvey made it clear that he down himself to catch the Falcone Family and Batman arrested him but on the contrary he knew Gilda commited all the assassinations (according to the animation) without any remorse and seems that he left her go, lack coherency.

    • @IAMTHESTARMAN
      @IAMTHESTARMAN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Gilda had all the time in the world- because she had no family to tend to. And Harvey was always busy. Being that holidays are a time for family, she had no one to hold her back from committing these murders. It fits so perfectly, I almost think this was the exact point of the holidays being chosen for murder.
      Also, Batman letting Gilda go makes sense. He blames himself for what happened to Harvey. He also recognized that Harvey took the blame for Gilda and as an act of remorse, he let her go.

    • @miguelaranda7727
      @miguelaranda7727 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@IAMTHESTARMAN Great points,
      I agree that according to the plot they use in the movie it makes total sense about gilda being the killer, but u can clearly see on those two scenes were the killer is portrayed, the killer has a bigger and manly figure (thats my point).
      About Batman i have to say that the one described in the movie is a more human one that we are use to see in most of the comics, but you have to consider that batman also gained some accute sense of justice so if thats the case, he should have arrested her and put on trial. Otherwise he would be compromising the very oath he made himself about bringing criminals to justice.

    The Long Halloween has always been one of my favourite comic book stories and made me fall in love with the character of Batman when I was 11 and this animated film only reinvigorated my love for the story. I really loved how the film was very faithful to the comic while taking creative liberties and changes to the source material, which gave new readers to the story a welcomed presence. The art style and animation were great, and although I do prefer Tim Sale's gorgeous artwork, I still really liked the animation choice and how fluid and dynamic characters were presented in the film. The detective atmosphere and noir tones were great and really felt like I was watching an animated mix of Se7en, The Godfather and The Dark Knight. The cast was also fantastic as well, Josh Duhamel had to be my favourite performance in the film and his Harvey Dent/Two-Face was superb, you really feel bad for Harvey while also intimidated with how cunning and skilled he can be and I like how they subtly foreshadowed his evolution into Two-Face, without it being too on-the-nose, thus making us the audience fully invested with his character even more. Also, the level of gravitas he puts into his performance was great and It made me feel like I was hearing Richard Moll's Two-Face from Batman: The Animated Series. Jensen Ackles also did a good job as Batman and Bruce Wayne and I think he really delivered it when Batman was under Scarecrow's fear toxin and Jensen Ackles' Bruce Wayne performance was quite compelling. Since this was Naya Rivera's final role, I can honestly say she nailed it, she was also great as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, where she shines in delivery, making Selina both a feared yet compelling character. Titus Welliver was great as Carmine Falcone and showed how many layers this character can have, as well as Troy Baker always delivering it as Joker. Not to mention David Dastmalchian giving an excellent performance as Calendar Man, being both creepy and caviler at the same time, real Hannibal Lectur vibes.
    Overall, despite the insane amount I have said, I think you can guess that I loved this film, both Part 1 and Part 2 (liked Part 2 just a little bit more), and all I can say is...
    I hope we get a Dark Victory animated sequel.
    (P.S. Siverely underrated story as well)

      I loved the film until the end. Never read the comics so I didn't see Gilda being the murder coming. Mainly because the holiday killer was shown as a man, the man in this clip as black eyes and different hair than she does. Shit her eyes are the brightest blue I've ever seen. Plus it's hard to believe that a small woman with no training or previous knowledge of firearms, could kill so many people.

      WARNING EXTREME SPOILERS AHEAD!!
      She didn’t kill them all. There was at least 2 Holiday killers, if not 3.
      As for the ending of this film, I really disliked it compared to the GN for a completely different reason, as Batman wasn’t in the end sequence,where she’s throwing all the evidence into the basement furnace. I mean Batman didn’t even know ‘Dents wife was 1 of the Holiday killers in the comic. I can’t even remember her being mentioned whatsoever in the sequel to the The Long Halloween, which was the great ‘Dark Victory’.
      The film should have carried out that end reveal in the exact same way as the book did, which just used an inner dialogue of ‘Dents wife explaining her own actions,as she throws all the evidence into the basement furnace, with NO BATMAN IN SIGHT.
      So yeah, Harvey’ committed some of the murders & his wife committed the others,without either knowing about the other ones actions, with Alfredo Carloni only committing one of the murders if I remember correctly. The book probably made this a bit more clear,but also more open ended & subjective in that sense. Which is what made the comic book ending a brilliant curve ball, with no need for Batman being there for what should have been an inner dialogue scene only.

I loved TLH so much that for 5 or so years it became a year's thing for me to read as it was such a gripping and well-told story. Now I have seen the film in both parts I loved it also. For me, this animated film is the best the WB has made with the exception of Death In The Family/Under The Red Hood.

    I encourage EVERYONE here to rewatch these two movies like I just did, because the clues that were left to indicate Alberto and Gildas relationship as well as Selinas link to the falcones were wonderful. The latter is especially prevalent in the scenes where Carmine speaks to Alberto and during Carmine's "family" speech in the yacht. During that speech, we get close ups of Alberto and Selina. Selina asking Alberto what it was like to grow up in the Roman Empire and her being the one to lead Bruce to the Falcone money vault was awesome too (idk if this was in the original comic). Also, it was extremely poetic that Gilda shot Alberto just as he was admitting to Bruce and Selina that all he wanted was to live away from Gotham and start a family with a very unknown person.
    Making Gilda the sole killer was a solid choice to me. She, imo, embodies the reckoning that the Roman Empire had to face for its crimes against Gotham, and she (as well as the Falcone-Wayne connection) also represent(s) how personal the war on crime in Gotham can be. Gilda also shows what can happen to the innocents of Gotham when Batman and the GCPD are NOT good enough and are unable to solve the case in time. Wonderful movie, RIP naya rivera. Fantastic performances all around.

      @mopnem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the lack of critique shows how one should not take the movie seriously. Not only should she have been arrested for SURE but it’s incredibly stupid to the level of anger from a viewers perspective that the killer who is drawn as a man is now somehow a woman - that’s not clever, that’s just literally making stuff up. As I say, why not just make the killer Calendar man or something since logic is meaningless in this film - in fact, that would even be a better ending. A lot of time wasted watching this film.

To me, all it felt like, was known material put to some form of animation, just to sell and make some money out of it. As such, it really did not do anything for me. I loved the Dark Knight movie trilogy because it was a refreshing and new approach, and it really worked. Looking at the Snyder-verse, that too was different and interesting, and as such worked. I haven't liked any of the Suicide Squad material though. What i did really like animation-wise was The Red Hood and Flashpoint Paradox. Both felt much better written and made. I was expecting a lot from this 'animated' movie, but sorry to say i was disappointed with it. Not that it was bad. I just don't think it was any good either. Each to their own i guess.
