I've been thinking about this concept for a while now. My goal is to know relative pitches well enough so that I can hear a note and play it on the second try. I can usually do this, especially if I'm warmed up. This is so useful when playing along with others. With practice, you can generally make the first approximation sound as if you played it intentionally. Do this a couple of times and people will assume you have perfect pitch.

True. Relative pitch is a definite skill to develop. But don't forget to compose a simple melody at the same time....
